  • Memories of tequila shots watching for st nick hovering overhead........

  • Don't much believe in resolutions (revolutions maybe...), but I'd take another year and 12 more attempts at getting better at songs....Happy everything people.

  • Not much of a song, but I've been making quick beats since Auria Pro was released. Here is one of them, all in Auria Pro, using One on both the baseline and melody.

  • Sorry, due to moving house over Christmas I've been neglecting this thread, I'll be sure to come back and comment on all the tracks that I've missed (and update the SoundCloud and the first page) at the first opportunity, even if this has to slip in to next month/next year.

In the meantime here is my finished track for this month, submitted with a whole day to spare.

@richardyot I've been thinking about you and (sorta) hoping in a game-theory way that the Major Domo might let a month slip by. House moving and all. Perfectly valid excuse. Give a little wiggle room for the rest of us.

    But no.

Like the vibe here, the downbeat positivity. Reminds me of someone/something (the feel, not the specific tune), but can't put my gnarly finger on it. All is/was good but at 2.30 I was really ready for some transcendence, a middle eight/lead/statement of resolving something or other, before then returning to the 'Have faith' and then the out...all toast. I think my feeling was amplified by the delicate vocal style (which is fine). I wanted a little more fight in there somehow towards the end. Sorry, not making a good fist of my explanation.

Hope the housing thingie went well. Ambitious, if also understandable, to do it over Chrimble. Posh new studio? Man shed?

  • @Halftone

Nice mellow groove man! The piano fits in there nicely. Very peaceful song while sipping on my glass of wine. Their is a Bass type synth sound throughout, that reminds me of MJ's Thriller. Cool song. I really like it. Going back in for another listen, except wait. Fluke is playing now. Same vein as Standoff. There's the piano again, fits so nicely into all the synth, electronic, space sounds. Good stuff mate! 2Min into Fuke, and there is some nice 90's Techno synth. Love it.

@Bluepunk Silent Night. Quite the intro. So.....It's like an electro Sex Pistol's recorded Silent Night. @2:20 there's the guitar. Great tone. Those damn socks. lol..... I know you don't own a real guitar, yet, but....the ending...all the string noises, they sound real. How'd you do that one? Very nice song.....Never thought I'd hear Silent night with an ending like that. Props.

@rkmonkey Ya, the snare is perfect. It's got a nice punchy sound. I do like the ? Organ Lead along with the guitar. I think it may be just a bit loud. Over shadow's the guitar playing along with it. I think the song needs the organ lead. I wouldn't take it out. I dig it.

@gburks Yup, it's got a deff. 60's vibe to it. From the drums to the vocals. I can see the Brian Wilson comparison, maybe more full on Beach Boys. The simple Xylophone through out is very catchy and smooth through the song.

@DounstarG Cool little Auria track. The beat and part of the tune remind me of Praga Kahn's Injected with a poison. Good one, good enough to add too.

@richardyot Very nice song. The music is is well mixed, drums, acoustic guitar sound, and synths. All very easy to make out and follow. I thought at first the vocals seemed a bit too loud to me. But after the song continues and another listen, I don't think they are. Great vocals and harmonies, the lyrics are great too. I mean really good. Read through them a few times. A short well told struggle/story. Well done.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear sorry to disappoint you by submitting my monthly entry despite moving house :) It has been a very chaotic fortnight, but I'm finally mostly unpacked. Still have an office to work in and a front room for music so the arrangements are very similar to the previous house. This house is rental though, so we'll probably move again before the end of next year once we decide where to buy next.

Good thoughts about a middle eight - it's a structure that I haven't used yet (still a newbie clearly), and something I should think about adding to a future tune. The trouble is my songs are always very long as it is, I'm trying to trim them down but it's difficult to create atmosphere and have musical passages in a 3 minute format.

  • @Bluepunk that's a nice cheery festive tune, maybe not quite "silent" though. Funny lyrics, and glad that SOTMC is keeping you from sinking 15 pints down at the pub, music is better for your health, if not for relations with the wife and neighbours.

Singing is very good as usual, guitars also sound great, would have no idea that they aren't "real" guitars, and the mix also works perfectly, the vocals sit just right. Good to see a more experimental intro as well, that bit sounded like something Jocphone might do. Let's see what you do in 2016!

  • @monzo (wherever you are) I found this one slightly less chaotic than the usual, there was a beat! Some disturbing sounds (the squealy drill-like one especially, and the distorted voice too) but also quite a lot of interesting stuff going on as well. A suitably experimental farewell for your final SOTMC, unless you can find a way to come back to us under a different alias (we promise not to tell).

  • @rkmonkey this one starts off a bit Sonic Youth-y until the main riff comes in, cool tune (if a little short), I like the meandering buzz saw guitar lead a lot (haha, might steal that idea!), great drumming as well, the drums sound live. Shame there's no vocals though. And to me it doesn't sound melancholy, more out and out angry :)

  • @gburks very cheerful and musical, dare I say even quite Christmassy :) That melody sounds strangely familiar, is it from a Christmas song or does it just sound like it ought to be? A fun bit of whimsy.

  • It's been a very busy time lately - so haven't had time to listen/comment ... So I'll try and get a few in this morning.

1st up: @Monzo "Mute Toxic" I like how it literally chugs along. Some good industrial-type sounds in there without it sounding harsh (at least for my tastes). I've had an underlying urge the past few months to make some music that is a little more in this realm as opposed to my more chilled-out/triphop/groove style I usually make ... so I'm considering this a bit of an inspiration.

  • @Igneous1 - "Chef's Omelette" - I really Love that bassline and overall groove of this one. I would have loved to hear the song really break down around the 2:25-2:30 mark ... it started to a bit, but maybe another few bars where you took away a few more elements (drums/percussion?) and just had a bar or two of the bassline and then back into the full groove with some kind of ripping solo element - a Rhodes piano solo maybe? Something funky. But really good stuff! Curious what you used for the bass sound?? (I see it's a Gadget track...)

  • @Johnny Goodyear - "Ukelele Rain" - Not my usual cup-of-tea so to speak songwise ... but you've captured a nice vibe and I thought it was well done both performance wise, production wise, and lyrics wise. And I really thought the vocal effect around 1:13 was neat-o! Also, this song reminded me a tiny bit of Leon Redbone for some reason...

Solid tune. I find the vocals surprising in a way. I expect a pause but it keeps on in a good way in desperate yet hopeful manner. Great job.

  • @High5denied Why thank you kind sir. Yep, those damn socks.........again. No iPad air2 this Christmas (lots of tears & I refused to eat the sprouts). Thought the song may fall on some "relevant" accommodating ears but alas, I will have to try harder for my birthday. The screeching is me just messing on guitarism, swiping fingers over the chord pads. I enjoyed that bit so thanks. "Oh little town of Bethlehem" next year! Kerunch!

Many cheers @richardyot had great fun making this one. I got some more amplitude amps with my voucher pressy so I'm hoping that the guitar sounds even more real this year. That Big Pig stomp box is vicious & I may have to use it in the January song. Felt a struggle with the singing this time but it's gotta be done so thank you kindly. Yes, listening to both @Jocphone & @monzo past tracks had an unconscious influence I think.

Right, I'm gunna listen to your track now & catch up with what's been going on. Glad your home move went well.

@richardyot Ah, a wispy, windy intro highlighted by those beautifully eerie "glock" sounding notes. The bass drum, to me, carries out two jobs very well. It complements the gentle parts & keeps your songs journey on an even keel. You're using that felt beater again & it works! The flicky, clicky rhythm that sits underneath fits perfectly with the immovable bass drum.

You have the knack of singing your vocals in a vulnerable, almost unguarded way & this adds to the charm of your song. It forces me to delve deeper to check for any other meanings that I may discover.

Congrats on releasing this, what with all the furniture moving you've had to endure.
"Could you please move the chair an inch to the left..........oh & while your there the table needs to pushed back to the wall......No, not that wall........" Good luck.

  • @richardyot hey man, happy new year and all that jazz! The music to this one is really, really good mate! Very rich, Movie soundtrackish to start which I loved.I know you're not that bothered but I'd love to hear you do some instrumental stuff just for shits and giggles! I just think that you're quietly superb at it...just sayin is all:)

The song has good lyrics and the melody is good & interesting but I personally think that the verses start rising to early on the first verse,I can't quite put my finger on it,it just happens a bit fast for me,I think maybe another couple of bars of something lower then moving up.(sorry,a bit vague that.)

    Nice work though mate :)

  • @LostBoy85 thanks for the feedback. In my mind the first verse is OK, but the second verse goes too high. I did actually record several more takes of the vocals with variations on the melody (especially in that second verse) but in the end none of them had the feel that I got in the initial take for demo I recorded at the start of the month, so in the end I just used that original take with some different processing - capturing vocal performances is a very fickle process, as you know.

As for the music, glad you like it. I'm trying hard to push the envelope and do something that sounds original. As a result though, I feel as if I don't really know what I'm doing, because there isn't really a template to follow. It makes it difficult to judge whether things are really working or not, I need some time to pass so I can asses the music more objectively, if I still like it in six months then that can be considered a success. But there's always the danger that the best version was the original acoustic demo :)

  • Shockingly late, had a fairly horrible December
@richardyot like it a lot, especially that eerie, jangly backing, liked the timing pattern. Got me back to my shoe gazing days!
@Dounstar_ loving that techno kick, would like to hear how that one ends up
Really sorry I missed anyone out, will be better in Jan...

I wish you all happy new year full of joy and sounds

@JohnnyGoodyear , @richardyot, @LostBoy85, @High5denied , @Bluepunk, @rkmonkey thank you for your welcome and feedback! Glad to be here. Sometimes I wear audiobus shirt walking outside looking who is going to come to me to shake hand and have some talk, but here you are all :)

@richardyot, now I see, songs are evolving in this thread ;) I wonder if you used the same vocal track as in the demo? Now it has interesting mood I like how it sounds , it's subtle but working beats, my favourite spot at 2:30 - 2:37

@crouchie , I like what you have said about your band not having been very into electronic stuff and you took the vocal track... (I have similar stories) How did you sync the vocals with this track on iOS ? Did you cut it, stretch or is it recorded in time? When it all starts it makes me dance then suddenly vocals come making me listen. good singing, the track is simple, but working till the end. I think, I could remember the melody after several playbacks

@Jocphone, I see David Lynch movie. I like the heavy bassline carrying it all, voice samples at 2:20 used at right time and place

@theconnactic this is a guitar track, made me see my guitar in the case for a loong time ;) Isn't the lead synths fighting with the guitar for the frequency range sometimes? Or maybe I would play with panning and volume a bit.

@Halftone hmm I had all the time the feeling it could be little but more faster and maybe more happening to the end. The sound is nice, the piano synth (or real one?) always catches the attention. But when it started to play (in the stream) 3rd time I found it right :)

@Bluepunk I had so much fun with this track, how it goes through and changes to punk rock song, is it you singing?

@rkmonkey I like the bass (?) starting at 1:00, very powerfull. I would adjust some mix levels according to my taste. I like the overall build-up. And the track has a very interesting end

@monzo uhm :) interesting trip you took me on

  • Thanks for the comments and feedback. Looking forward to your music in 2016 @High5denied @richardyot & @fRAS

  • Thanks @fRAS and welcome again.

David Lynch is probably somewhere in there as I love his work.

Must get myself in gear to do the big review too. I would blame my lateness on Christmas, except it happens every month..

  • @fRAS Thanks for your kind feedback & glad you've joined the club. Yep, it's me singing. Effects on parts 1& 2 then naked in 3&4. It was fun using synths for the first time but will probably revert back to some heavily distorted stuff for January. Looking forward to all of our journeys over the next year. Cheers!

  • @fRAS thank u for your comment. When I did the tune I was given the backing track from Logic as a stereo stem, so I stuck it in Auria and did a vocal. We're taking that original back to the band and we'll work out a live version, hopefully including some loops from that demo. We're a funk band but we've recently changed direction and are adding more electronic stuff to our originals (as a group of 40 somethings I reckon that only makes us about 20 years behind the times now...). The original is more dubby. I'm happy with mine but, like everyone, I always feel there is more work to be done :-)

that's interesting I have also group of 40 somethings (more than 20 years) but I have never managed to introduce electronic stuff :) I wonder if you have soundcloud of it to inspire me?

This is the demo, it's what we're working on as a group. Someone's getting to work on a double bass and we'll strip out most of the percussion to let the drummer in, he'll play to a click so that some of the stuff can be looped and played off a laptop/iPad. There's even talk of using Loopy to jam along to for one track... We'll see!
This Soundcloud account is my old one and has some of the band's tunes on. Scroll down to the Funky Jets tunes earlier on if you are interested. The male singer is me
    Cheers

  • @Halftone

Cheers for your comments / suggestions. All the tracks I post here are not final. I still intend to return to them later to tweak them somewhat, so I'm open to suggestions.

The bass parts are Dublin's 'Disco MG' patch and 'Fretless bass' in Darwin. Incidentally, I use Montreal and Firenze on pretty much everything I do these days. I find a lot of the Darwin sounds to be obviously 'retro', even though i like them.
