  • @theconnactic A happy, jaunty tune that bursts with some fabulous guitar playing. You can certainly strut your stuff sir. I like the chords you have used, they seem to go very well together & complement the feel that I get. The rhythm is quick, tight & crisp & maybe some bongos opposite the snare beats would beef/fill out the ends of some of the lines. Particularly at the break at 2.20 when the distorted guitar part kicks in to follow the rhythm guitar rhythm you've played in that part.
More importantly though, your tune makes me smile.

What iPad do you use? 28 effect loaded audio tracks! I'm not sure how many the rest of the songsters use but I know on my 4, that would send my CPU on a holiday after a visit to the Drs for some serious therapy.

  • @Halftone I can't think of any valid reasons for saying this but I hear some elements of Killing Joke in your tune. That is a compliment cos I do like them.....a lot. A great bass line, which methodically gets into my veins. It hooks onto my yum, yum hormones & won't be dislodged.

It's the little things you've added that I enjoyed like the clap between the bass & snare drum beats. This has helped to add a looser feel to your song. That & the extra little flicky hi hat beats voiced at the end of the lines. You've done a great playing, mixing & producing. Very professional indeed. It's infectious & I'm one who's contented to be infected by your stuff. Top tune.

@Jocphone another interesting soundscape, with lots of different sounds, probably not quite as accessible as some of your other recent efforts, but the main problem is that having heard vocals in your entry from last month I now expect to hear them every month! For me the vocals instantly make the track more accessible and enjoyable because they lend a human dimension to the music, which otherwise sounds bit too abstract and intellectual.

I haven't ruled a version with vocals out, and we are only half-way through the month. Not promising anything as I think it will entail a shed-load of extra work but, we'll see..

    Dear Santa-daddy:

Please bring @Jocphone the time to add vocals to his latest! Just v. interested to hear what you would come up with, as much for content as anything else.... :)

But mate, you can't do vocals with your trap shut :)

  • @Richardyot, thank you very much for the compliments about my guitar playing. Nice to hear (read) this!

I use an iPad air, first gen. I thought it would be long on the tooth by now (and I do plan to upgrade to the upcoming Air 3), but this little fellow still rocks and do the job with (almost) everything I throw at it.

    All the best!

@Halftone really loved everything about this one, a great very hooky bass line/main riff that propels the whole track along and which the other instruments dance around beautifully. Loved the choice of sounds, all the elements are extremely well crafted in terms of tone and music - every part feels like it really belongs. Most of all though it's a got a great groove and some great melodic tunes.

Thanks Richard - and the others - for the nice comments. A few of you mentioned the baseline/groove - and I appreciate that as I tend to base all my tracks on that starting foundation - building a great groove between beat and bass. I love a fat, bouncy, groovy baseline!!! As far as my tracks go (usually) - i often start with a simple beat and then try adding a baseline until I get something that I can listen to in a loop over and over for several minutes. If it still sounds groovy after that I then tend to add all the other parts after. For my tastes - the bass line is often the best part of a song - especially so for more electronic type mimic - but also other forms. ( like the bass line from Stranglehold by Ted Nugent - I could listen to that loop all day).

I'll try and listen and comment on all the other tracks over the next few days guys - and thanks again for your kind words on my track

Is soundcloud playing up again? I looked earlier and the newer tracks were on the SOTMC page. I just went to go and start some listening and the it seems to have lost the latest additions.

There seems to be a glitch somewhere. All the latest tracks are tagged as reposted in the SOTMC SoundCloud account, but they're not showing in the stream.

I'm moving house this weekend so I won't be able to look into it until next week some time.

Yeah, that's the odd thing. Will probably sort itself knowing soundcloud. There are some from this month to start listening and writing about.

    Good luck with the move.

    @crouchie

The beat starts off, and it reminds me of the beat at the beginning of MJ's Beat it. Your voice fits the song well. And sounds great. Really starts to sound full and mesmerizing aroun4:30ish. I love the Bass synth sound in sync with the drums. Excellent song!

Thanks v much! Appreciate your comment. Need to extend that bass out to cover the end and keep it going a bit longer, now that I've listened to it a few more times.

@Halftone Hey man, another great job by yourself.Nice hypnotic stuff! I love the piano at 30 secs. Now In way of critique, all I've got...& I'm not sure how accurate I am but in that first minute those piano chords and the piano riff sound like they're being played in the same octave? Now that's fine, but as a preference thing I would have liked the riff to have been an octave above...just to create some distance between the two elements.Im sorry if that's not making sense.I know that's just an subjective thing, but those are my thoughts.

All round great job though mate. :D

  • @Halftone enjoyed that, nice layers, always love a 303. I would share lostboy's sentiment over the number of elements sharing the same octave/frequencies. I often do that and need others to have a listen then flag it up. It just makes the middle sound crowded and some of the excellent loops you've put in aren't entirely distinct. It is a great tune though, and I really do like it. Nicely done!

  • 2 x Verses of the carol, 1 verse thanking you all and the last verse is my usual. All 4 verses are in the silent night chords. This is my first entry using a synth ( Cyclops). I've got a stinking cold and a lot sounds muffled to me. I will take advice from you all... Please! Merry christmas and a happy peaceful 2016.

Love it,. Waiting... Waiting... Waiting. Great build up. Would like the vocals to be louder. My favorite ending.

  • @Bluepunk I don't know what the other Johnny would make of it all, but this one likes it :)

MUST up the vocals. Don't want to hear anything about colds, as noted before they do nothing but help the raspy timbre :)

Would give a fair amount to hear you down at the Broken Spoke playing this one on Christmas Eve. As it's only a couple of blocks down the street I probably wouldn't even have to leave the house. But I would, of course....

  • Thank you @JohnnyGoodyear & @rkmonkey for your ears and great comments. Here is the edited version. Will check your local haunt out tomorrow Johnny. It looks a fun place!

I couldn't sleep so checked out the Broken Spoke. Haha, yes, I'd love it! I hope it would cause as much hysterical mayhem as when The Pistols played in Texas in 1978 as well  I like the menu at your local & a pint of your finest "Angry Orchard" please guv'nor. Have you your ticket reserved for New Years Eve yet? Alvin Crow & The Pleasant Valley Boys sound like a yahoo type night & surely not to be missed! Thanks again.

I've whacked the vocals up by 3 clicks. Please say if not enough & I will adjust tomorrow.

@Bluepunk Much better, especially at the start. I can hear/understand all the words now which is good. I would still like to hear the snarling singing a little bit further up in the mix, but that might be a reverb/muddy thing (I defer to better mixers etc).

As for the Broken Spoke (or 'the old BS' as some folks call it), it's the Texan equivalent (to my mind) of a Devonian cream tea emporium; professional heritage sales :) But it's about as tatty and authentic as any tourist could hope for. Good music and dancing (or its kind), but I'd pass on the food....for all of my muttering, Austin is becoming increasingly polished and slick, so we're keen to hold on to the honky-tonk that's still here....

  • @Bluepunk awesome. also not one to judge mixes but still would love a slight boost in the vocals etc.. What did you use for drums?

  • I don't know @Bluepunk , I think the first version, although the vocals were a little harder to hear, actually had more "bile" to it. This one seems a bit too polite, punk for pensioners ;)
