No quantization when stopping is a huge oversight, and ultimately a major flaw. Expecting users to stop everything on time on their own without quantization is asking too much.

i was puzzled by this comment, until I realized I think you mean that there is no synchronization of stopping shared between apps, like there is when slaving them with midi? I found that a little odd, too, you have to use audiobus play button to stop the apps together, rather than their own transport controls. Audiobus wouldn't otherwise be necessary, if you aren't bussing audio in audiobus.

Is this because Link requires a master, and audiobus is the only local master in iOS world? The slaves can share tempo info, but all start/all stop has to come from the master? Not that that would be too high of a price to pay, if it sorts out the sync mess in iOS.

  • Watch this space - we're going to post a video that sheds some light on this.

  • What (another) great Christmas present! I wasn't too excited before because I though I would have to have some form of Ableton Live software somewhere in the chain or at least 2 different, compatible iOS devices but having watched @jakoB_haQ 's video, this is going to be fantastic! Thanks to all involved! :)

You're very welcome. That's what the Ableton team was going for: launching this before the holidays so you guys would have something to play with. :)

Here's the video I mentioned before.

  • The dream of proper sync coming true? AB chains of Loopy, drum machines and sequencers...? First tests worked super smooth. Hit play and sync. Wow! I guess I will step out of my Auria (trance) box. Good luck its weekend. Thanks to everybody who developed that Link

Triq Traq currently functions differently. It starts playing immediately when triggered independently but from the correct position in the bar.....whether in audiobus or not

  • Great vid from jakoB

That is actually true. But I think that's a strength of Ableton Link in that it lets developers decide what the preferred behaviour of their application is. Ableton does not dictate what you do with the phase information.

  • Now the only thing missing is a big RED button in Audiobus that will say "Sync" to external MIDI hardware and will listen to clock from outside...

....otherwise my new step sequencer is good for decoration (must ask Johny if he uses his as a foot rest or headrest) ;)

You can use Loopy for that. Use it as a Master MIDI clock and slave your sequencer to it.

Link opens up some nice workflow possibilities. Got this mess all playing in sync, though it started to strain my 4th gen ipad. Was sending MIDI from fugue to z3ta.

Simultaneously sending audio from multiple synced apps to a single DAW begins to approach a computer DAW workflow. Big step forward IMO

Sebastian you're the best (if I get it to work).......THANKS

  • Link on one device is great but it really opens up multi device playing. My iPad 4 struggles with some things but now it's got Drumperfect (synced to Loopy), leaving the iPhone for flux:fx and another Loopy. I've yet to try 3 devices!

  • Well this is super fun. It would be sweet if the Audiobus panel had a big red circle with a play button in it that recorded each of the inputs and pumped the tracks into audioshare. :)

  • I just had some fun with Fugue Machine and Elastic Drums in Input Slot 1, MiMix in Output1 and Input 2 (of Audiobus) and Audioshare in Output 2. It recorded the output of Elastic Drums and Fugue Machine into Audioshare no problem and best of all it seems you can change presets in realtime in Elastic drums and it still all stays in time and I could fade out each app separately with MiMix!

It might not be big news but I never had much success chaining up and recording apps like that until now! :)

  • How many iOS devices are possible at once? Who has tried the most?

I'll try my 4 devices over the weekend, but I'd love to hear others' experiences :-)

Apps that record by going into record pause mode and then start recording when you press play work with the AB master play button ......

You can link as many as your are funny to :) I only have to, so there goes the excitement in that :)

At the Mobile Music Meetup in Berlin I think someone said that they tested it with more than 100 devices simultaneously.

100! Wow. Well that only takes away a tiny bit of the joy of discovering it on my own ;-)

I'm also very excited about the prospect of keeping Loopy open on every device to regulate non-Link enabled apps and keeping them on tempo/BPM

    So many possibilities.

  • When I open another session in Loopy there doesn't seem to be an option to use that sessions bpm. So now I need to rename all the sessions as they open with the bpm of the last session! Unless I'm missing something.

Hmm, definitely something Mike would have to comment on. I think one workaround would be to make a new session first choose the option that resets BPM for loopy and then opening the session from your session list.

  • Is anyone else having issues with the Link to MIDI app not being in the US app store?

It has been temporarily pulled. More about it here: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/185715/#Comment_185715

He's pulled it for now. See his post etc.

  • Gotcha, thanks! Gotta wait a bit to see if my MPC and Link will ever coexist...

I think I tried that and it still reverted to the last used tempo. If there is an option in the new session to have the last tempo or not maybe Mike can put an option to do the same in saved sessions? I'm on an iPhone so in gig situations resetting the tempo is not ideal.

  • edited December 2015

I don't think talking about "phase" in this context is a good idea, its to confusing.
what we are talking about is the next 1 in the beat ... and not the phas(e)(ing) of the audio ...

    I've forwarded this to Mike.
