Song of the Month Club - January 2016

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, is often the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. Instrumentals are very welcome, and songs with vocals are especially encouraged, so if you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

  • New Years Day creation. Not my usual but including lyrics because they may be hard to decipher.

    It's been ten years
    Whisper softly in my ear
    Needle, fingernails
    Penetrate my skin
    Ten years gone
    Can't take
    One more bite

    Buried deep inside
    Buried deep inside

    Taste it before I feel
    Penetrate my skin
    Taste it before I feel
    This time I'll win

    First kiss first love
    First time I've felt this
    First kiss first love
    Can you feel my kiss

    Fingernails

    Ten years gone
    Buried beneath my soul
    Needles in my skin

  • Been kinda productive this break. All done in SunVox again but shoved it through Triumph ( A desktop mastering app, as mentioned by @Tarekith ) to see if it had any discernible benefits.

In two minds about vocalising over this one, not sure how I would go about it yet, or if it needs it.

  • This months contribution. All done in Gadget, mastered in Auria Pro (using Pro-C2 and Pro-Q2).
Bit more in the way of bass this time.

  • My first submission. All done on an iPad using Korg Gadget with a little mastering in Final Touch.

  • Nice bit of dreamy ambient!

Very very clear overall sounds and very balanced mix too!

Not sure what the rules are for non-submitters, but I enjoyed this. My only...request would be that I think a sorrowful clean electric guitar should ease in there at some point. It sounds like your electronic leaning, and I like that, but I still waited for the lead.

  • @Jocphone great stereo listen. Cool lead into the 1:30 mark. Enjoyed the depth and transitions.Could easily hear a vocal melody but not needed.

@Igneous1 build and bass work well. Flows easily. Second half additions keeps it interesting.

@achromus excellent mellow tack and first entry. In agreement with @touchconspiracy. Great job.

I have a suspicion that the rule might be that if you're a typically friendly forum member you're more than welcome to comment (as long as it's in a typically friendly constructive manner), but that if you're a submitter you are (to show good faith) somewhat required or expected to comment.

thanks rk. I think that's the trouble. I can't hear a vocal melody for this.

To be honest I have been playing around with this, and another 'christmas' song, through most of December and am happy with the music but seem to be having a bit of a mental block when it comes to adding vocals.

Maybe that's the challenge for January..

    Happy New Year SOTMers.

Sorry for my general absence over December - ended up being a pretty busy month in the real world.

I made this as a kind of early rough track. I'd really like feedback on:

    • if you think this stands as a (minimal) track on it's own - go mix and polish it in Auria
    • needs more adornment / more parts / more work on the drums etc.etc.
    • put it down as an experiment and move on - there's not a lot there

As usual i've got a poor perspective on my own stuff!

Made with Elastic Drums and Animoog - into MTD (using Bassline as a sequencer) ... on my iPhone no less - making use of the lovely Link.

I think JGY pretty much nailed it, but just so you don't feel alone, I'm a SOTMC part-timer, myself. I've submitted/commented a few months, and just rolled in to take in a few tunes and offer feedback during others – always with the hope that I might submit that month myself, but, y'know ... far better to comment without posting than post without commenting

  • Good to hear @eustressor and @JohnnyGoodyear.....I still hope to submit something, but I'm still trying to get a startup biz going, so time is a rare commodity.

Interesting sounds. Sounds like an early sci-fi movie soundtrack. A vocoder might work?

Could work. I'd add some arpeggiated, percussive synth parts and develop the bass and drum parts. Nice background textures.

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000

I like the overall vibe of the track, with it's BOC-like tonality and the bassline underpinning it nicely.
You mightn't like my next bit...I think the drums are too stiff / loud in the mix, as they are, considering the otherwise 'fluid' nature of the track.

Really good mastering. Like the sequences at 1.05 and 1.40.

Interesting. Maybe I need to think outside the SunVox when I come to add vocals..

I'm quite happy with it but there might be room for a lead part - maybe in a bridge section.

Thanks very much. I'm still a bit unhappy about the mix though.

  • @rkmonkey I really feel the anguish when listening to this one, it's very powerful, and for the most part I really like it, particularly the swirling guitars. The only think that could be improved is the vocals, out of tune in places, but overall the vocal performance doesn't quite match up to the song - vocals are really hard though, as I know only too well.

It's a great tune though, so keep working on that singing and I'm sure you will be able to get the kind of performance you need.

  • @Jocphone this one certainly jolted me, I first enjoyed the bleepy intro, because it's simply a pretty cool sound, but then most unexpectedly a beat and a melody appeared, not at all what I would have expected - your entries have been getting more accessible, but this one is verging on the commercial :)

I like the simple beat, the bass, the little repetitive melodies that are played throughout, the vocal sample, and the soft piano. It's a nice mellow listen with just the hint of an edge to it. It's really good, and I will also add that IMO it doesn't necessarily need vocals - it's got plenty of atmosphere to keep it interesting as it is.

  • Hi @achromus

Welcome to SOTM - and thanks for the comments on my track.

Really like your track. Very nice mood to it.

It's inspired me to get back into Gadget actually!

I particularly like the very start of the track with the kind of reversed sounding synth tone. Can I ask which Gadget you used for this? It's great - it sounds like audio played backwards - or some kind of granular synth actually.

Well mixed too - as i think someone else said.

  • Thanks @Igneous1 - I think you're probably right about the drums needing to come down in the mix and be more fluid. It's all very rough right now. I just thought i'd do one of those 'post your early sketch' things this month.

I think i'll keep the synth part, re-do the bassline (which is actually just some noises in Elastic Drums) and build more of a worked up track around it.

Gonna listen to the other tracks posted shortly...

The sound you are referring to is a mix of Kiev with a tweaked 08: Foggy Pad patch and real-time twiddling on the x y pad on the filter section; and Berlin using a tweaked 005: Natural Lead. Actually it's mostly the latter but it's the mix of the 2 that creates the backwards-like effect.

I think Gadget is capable of creating some very surprising sounds. It's simplicity encourages a lot of experimentation imo. I just bought Auria Pro so once I finish my current Gadget project I'll give that a go but I'll no doubt keep going back to Gadget. It's a lot of fun.

  • @rkmonkey Definitely not your usual as you say but a cool change of pace & intensity to kick off your New Year. I listened yesterday & racked my brain to search who it slightly reminded me of. Today I've got it. There's a hint of Duran Duran melody in there. Especially at 0.40 to 0.55 & also running through your tune.

I particularly like your heady, whirly guitar work & sound. I can hear the vocals & just as importantly, feel the emotion flowing through your veins as you sing. The bouncy, boingy spring (3.13 to 3.18) is great & not expected. Like the way you've ended your song as well. Yeah, great start to the year!

Cool. Thanks for the inside info (gonna run off an experiment with this now). I do precious little layering of two different patches to be honest. I ought to do more.

I have AP and it's great - but i'm finding that, even with an Air2, I have to be careful with Twin2 instances lest I blow the CPU. One of the (many) great things about Gadget is its efficiency in allowing many, many Gadgets.

  • @Igneous1

Quite poppy thing month! I like the variety of sounds, particularly the wooden sounding percussion hits. Feels a bit Peter Gabriel-esque to me. Maybe it could meander less - but I know you like a wander :).

  • edited January 2016

    @Jocphone

Mmm - I can hear them working on the roof... moving about a fair bit up there.

    Ah... the robots have arrived.

Yep, still working on the roof. Doing some hammering now.

Ah, cool... i'll stop being silly now - loving the piano part coming in.

And from there on in I really love it. Beautiful piano playing combined with that lovely metallic beat.

For me the intro is just a bit too weird. But the rest sounds really accomplished to be honest (in a pretty avant garde kind of way). One of my favourite tracks of yours.

Thanks for the kind appraisal. I am pretty pleased with how a few tracks came together through December so it's good to hear I'm not completely deluded.

No idea which sound you hear as a vocal sample though. There is a single piano note sample, everything else is built from scratch in SunVox.
