Welcome to the rusted chromium underbelly @hellquist
I liked this. But I'm a sucka for the peaceful easy feeling. I think the bar has been raised pretty high in this area over the past decade or so, I also think that production 'values' and so forth are more under the microscope the mellower and more relaxed something is. A good challenge for iOS perhaps. What did you predominantly use in Lyra for this?
Hehe, thanks for the welcome.
Well, didn't use any Lyra at all actually.
I used Nave (IAA) in, on a midi track, where I added the Timeless2 filter from the start already when recording. The main track is basically 4.30 recorded in one go where I answer the delay/reverb of Timeless, which then is also what sets the "tempo" in the song (not that it is full of tempo, but there is a flow that is created by the bounced notes compared to what I do as an input).
I then copied that miditrack twice, once for a harp-ish Twin2 sound (to get the stringlike attack) and a second time for the sub bass that is underneath it all. Those two tracks I removed quite a bit from in comparison to the original track. Just after 2.15-2.20 there are some high notes that I played with the pitch bend on my keyboard to get the glidy notes. I removed all of those things (and similar) for the other two tracks.
Cheers, that's one of the best comments I've ever had !
First post. Something I wrote about my feelings following the Paris atrocities. All instrumentation is IOS mixing mastering and vocals in Ableton Live. Thanks to my wife for the vocals and the melody. All feed back welcome.
@hellquist Welcome and great tune. Congratulations on your restraint, works well. 2:20 brings excitement into the track. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
@orchardman wow. Heart and soul. Great job to you and your wife. Great screaming solos. What did you use? Memories of Portishead, Mazzy Star......
My first song of the year! Happy 2016 you all! Dimitri.
@orchardman, loved your guitar work. Congrats!
@theconnactic incredible tune. Great guitar chops, Bass at 2:02 was awesome. Big fan here.
@rkmonkey , I like this track. Love the slight atonal twists here and there. The lyrics suit the feel of the song, a bit abrasive. One thing I would say, is that maybe the mix is a bit busy, maybe too many things going on at once. Very intense.
@Jocphone , not normally my thing, but I liked that, especially the transition from the somewhat crazy stuff at the beginning into the melodic section about 1:20. That sounds like it would make some good movie music to me, it's very evocative.
@Igneous1, that piece moves. Love it. Maybe could have used a bit more of an edge on the bass? But that's music that would make people dance. Mix is excellent.
@achromus, lovely bit of a ambient music indeed. Drifts along and builds beautifully. Got that lovely layered, textured sound to it.
@Matt_Fletcher_2000, it's a good base, needs something more. Something high and soaring, with an edge, either synth or guitar, muted down over the quieter sections. A little craziness here and there would work in this piece.
@High5denied, that's a beautiful mix. Everything very nicely place. As with a lot of ambient music, I want it to do more, move into something, but it was a lovely bit of listening as it is.
@BvsMV, that's a great piece of music. Fantastic movement and life through it. "Allegro Con Brio." Mix seems pretty well spot on. I like rhythmic breaks in music, to slow things down a bit, then build them back up, that kind of addition to the piece I'd like, but the piece stands well as it is.
@hellquist, that's a lovely thing, but it does need something more for me. The mix is great as it is, but I just want some beats, some more melody, some build.
@orchardman, what a track. Love the harshness of the guitars throughout, super evocative. I think the vocal may have been a bit too high in the mix, but her voice is great, and it has just the right amount of reverb on it. Lovely, nasty lead guitar.
@theconnactic, great tune. Great movement. Love the two dynamic breaks that you put in, they let the song breath, let the listener breath, then you bounce right back in again. Brings ongoing interest to the piece. Lead guitar playing is most excellent.
Okay, my first post here. Should have just posted here in stead of creations. This is called Changing Times, and is based on an old improv framework I wrote and have mucked with for years. I wrote it all out in standard notation in Notion, then exported that as a midi file, and imported it into Auria Pro. Drums are using Lyra drums, bass is Lyra bass, the synth is from Fabfilter 2. I redid the guitars, replayed them live. I did one mix of this, then hit a nasty bug in one of the Auria betas, and lost all my plugins and their settings. Redid them all, and used the real time audio warping to fix some looseness in the starting solo. I'm pretty happy with it now, but I would love to get some opinions on the piece and especially on the mix. I hope to become a regular poster, but my productivity is not set to a monthly schedule.
Glad you've wandered in the door Rick. As for productivity and monthly schedules; if you mosey up to the bar there in the back you'll hear us all talking about this very thing and all the time. Inspiration having to find you working and all that I guess
I like this piece. It's a bit 'prog' for me, or I thought it was going to be, but by the end I found myself very relaxed and mellow. More than anything it also sounded accomplished and using Notion makes sense to me here, but that's only because I can't imagine pulling this all together without some real framework (as opposed to my normal doodling).
It's that odd (good) combination of something that sounds like a lot of work, but is effortless on the ear also.
Thank you Rick and good to see you making a submission too. I don't think any of us found a monthly schedule easy. Several of us have been consistently late but it's not so formal, and the attempt at keeping up has meant that I pushed myself to create an albums worth of material, over the last year, where I would have probably procrastinated over a couple of tracks in the same period.
Thanks @JohnnyGoodyear, I'm glad it sounds effortless. I don't doodle very well. Or, I do doodle, but it all seems to come out sounding like 12 bar blues. At some point, I'd love to learn more about how most of the folks here put things together, it's a different musical world, using synths, sequencers and generators. But I have a lot to get down in what I'm doing yet. And forcing myself to follow the process has meant a lot.
@Jocphone, I think that's what I want, too. A kick in the butt. Do some stuff, finish some stuff. My process takes a while, but in the end, got to produce music to convince myself I'm not just a couch noodler. I actually have another piece almost finished, so I could actually have something for February too. Could be a bit dry after that for a bit.
Perfect time to try something new then!
I have a boss recorder (BR 800) besides this. All I ever seemed to do was put drums down, then bass, then a couple of guitar tracks. The process was OK but felt a little tired. The availability of all these tools with the touch interface on iOS has allowed me to explore much wider sonic territories. There are still the remnants of drums, bass, rhythm and lead in what I produce but I feel like I am starting to create something much more personal and inspiring.
That's where I'm at, too. I used to write straight acoustic guitar instrumentals. Now I seem to have entire bands and orchestras at my fingertips, and that sure makes me happy. I have also found that composing away from the guitar, where I get stuck in old ways, and doing it in Notion has been incredibly liberating. I do make trouble for myself by writing things a bit tough for me to play.
It's proving to be quite a challenge to keep up with the entries this month
@High5denied this one is a complete departure form your previous style, from alt-rock to downtempo electronica! Since you used MIdiMorphosis I presume the synths are played live with your guitar - in which case good job, the playing sounds very tight. I love doing this with MIDI Guitar personally, it's great fun playing the guitar and hearing a synth. The tune is great, no crits on the music or the mix, I really like the main melody that is used as a recurring theme, it would make a great soundtrack for a film.
@BvsMV "BIG" is an apt title for your new tune. Very nice intro & the two snare beats in about 0.50 went very well with the style you were playing. That part reminded me of an early Tears for Fears track which I can't remember the title of but still made me think of good memories. A thrusting Big beat along with a lower, pumping bass line hold all your lovely synth parts together in the faster, main body of your song.
It gave me an overall 80's feel, a bit of Howard Jones maybe & I pictured you with synths & drum machines spread around your recording space. Flying from one to another on a fast wheeled chair. Not chaotically but with planned & deliberate intent to create this piece. Nice one sir.
@rickwaugh Welcome to SOTMC. "Changing Times" The title particularly resonated with me because of your drum beat. I really wasn't expecting the snare to hit where it hits. I thought it would have been played opposite to where you've got it. That's a good thing as it adds an edgy, uniqueness to the rhythm. Could possibly do with a couple of fills at the beginning or end of some of the lines (there's probably a technical, song writing word for that).
Beautifully played & sounding guitars, especially the acoustic plucking which I found calming. The mix sounded good & balanced to pick out all the different sounds at the right levels. I second what @Jocphone said earlier this morning & a good motivator for smashing through the obstacles of life to get that song finished each month. Good luck & a great start.
Really nice song, @rickwaugh. Liked the way it evolves. The tones chosen all suit quite well the mood of it, and the performance is also very good. Congrats!
P.S.: I'll listen to all the other songs later.
P.S.: @rkmonkey and @rickwaugh, just read your reviews of my own song: thank you very much indeed!
@BvsMV A nice uplifting tune, with some big sounds, it's the feel-good moment in an art house movie, until the change of gear at 1.20 where the quirky synth lead comes in. I like the recurring string-type synth lead line that meshes the whole thing together, it's more harmonic than melodic but creates a pleasing theme for the whole.
There's some unusual rhythms in both the drums and the synth leads, but they don't jar or create any uncomfortable feelings, which isn't easy to pull off. I think it's a very appealing track, might even go so far as to call it commercial (in a good way).
Thanks, @Bluepunk and @theconnactic. I spend a. Lot of time anguishing over guitar tones, and learning and playing the stuff I write. Thanks so much for the kind comments. I'm glad the mix worked, because I'm just starting to feel like I know what I'm doing there. Just.
@Bluepunk, the drums, I'm happy how they turned out, but would like to do more. I don't normally do a full drum set, I have a Percpad that I want to use use more, and actually play percussion parts. Definitely needs some fills, some interest in it. My timing when I do play them is pretty poor, and I'm at the stage where I think everything sounds like crap. The siren call of letting midi do things for me is hard to resist.
@hellquist a nice understated track, there's been quite a few entries so far this month that I would describe as cinematic, and this one seems to fit that description as well. I like the way that the delay is adding almost all of the backing texture, it's acting like a harmonic backing as the notes overlap and thicken the sound and merge together.
I think you did the right thing with the minimal arrangement, I think adding beats or a bass line would have cluttered the music without adding anything to it. As it stands it's very moody and evocative, and that's what music should be IMO.
