Sorry, having a bit of a mare but didn't want to miss out so I'm putting on something I did last year that makes me smile. V basic, all using stock sounds from Gadget, not really mixed and the a spoken vocal. Uses a sample from Truth Is Out Of Style by MC 900ft Jesus from back in the 90s. Promise will do some comments in the very near future.
@crouchie
Ace ! One of the best tracks posted here IMO.
Very clever lyrics and a well funky backing. Just shows what can be done with 'the Gadge'. I have to say the lyrics and spoken delivery are the best bit for me.
A slight critique - the hi-hats are a bit repetitive.
Hey, @crouchie: loved the lyrics! Congrats!
@Bluepunk Thanks for such positive comments. I glad somebody got what I was trying for with the contrast between the vocal bits and the guitar break.
@crouchie oh yeah man! What a great track sir. That funk, disco sound & style you play is very catchy & stays with me. I haven't heard & don't know the sampled song but I won't forget this, your song. Clever, witty lyrics are all over your tune & they sit & sound perfectly comfortable on top of your infectious groove you have going on.
There are too many lyrical highlights to pick out my favourite but if you forced me, I would select the seamless & apt transition into the rave section & those wonderfully expressive sighs at 4.52 & 5.06. I can feel your exasperation & humoured frustration by your delivery of them. Brilliant! And the brass......yum yum. Whoever Bill is, he sounds like a ton of fun & may know my misses (song will tell all later this month).
Love the ranting & if "Brads Dad" had a soundtrack, this would be it, no questions. A star plus with an extra large
@hellquist Thanks for the feedback. I'm no expert at mastering and I tend to use the presets in Ableton. Whenever I try to fiddle with the sound it just ends up sounding worse. The heavy distortion on the guitar break was intentional and I have had both positive and negative comments about it. But hey thats the beauty of music everybody can have their own opinion.
@hellquist Nice atmospheric piece. I loved the opening couple of minutes but I just wanted it go somewhere, perhaps some guitars or a beat after the high synth at around the 3 minute mark.
@rkmonkey Lots of good things going on in this track but the whole thing suffers from the muddy mix. Sometimes I think its a case of less is more. Loved the guitar riff and the vocals are good but lost in the mix.
@Igneous1 @theconnactic @Bluepunk big thanks to u all, really kind comments. This was one of those tracks that just seemed to fall into place, although I think it could still use work, but isn't that always the way? The band I'm in now want to play it and so so we've got to find out a way of making it work live. Now I've go to try to memorise all the words...
Good luck with that one! I'd give up trying & use a music stand! If it's good enough for the genius Sir John Lydon these days, then it's .............................I reckon it will go down a storm live!
@crouchie brilliant man. @Bluepunk has already done a much more eloquent review than I could ever do but I reinforce everything he said. Certainly put a smile on my face on a cold and wet Wednesday evening. For those of us old enough to remember John Cooper Clarke this certainly takes us back.
@crouchie Very good sir. Nice lyrics (of course) and diffidently/well delivered. Crit? Level. If your vocal is (say) set at 56% I think it should be 64% minimum, maybe even 66%. I know meaningless numbers, but proportionately you get the idea....
First submission. Although it's spent a lot of time getting polished in a desktop DAW, it has enough app DNA in it to merit inclusion. Currently instrumental, but mostly because I'm having a hard time figuring out how to get vocals in there— it's more of a minor key dirge than I normally do, and I have a bad habit of leaving off the vocals until the end and having to get out the musical shoe horn. Maybe it doesn't need vocals anyway. You tell me.
This thread has become quite the beast. I have little enough time to make music, much less digest this entire thread, but I'll try my best to contribute. Trying to get out of this creative bat cave I've dug for myself.
@aaronpc Vocals: Spanish man, old, taunting a young girl who gives back in kind and then some. Flamenco bruhaha with extra Tango posturing. Perhaps at a country carnival. Like the music, very whirly and whirling. For some reason cut off at about 3.18.
@orchardman it's a very good song that's almost there but IMO needs a tiny bit more polish in the vocal performance. Your wife has a really nice voice and is clearly a very good singer, but a few of the lower notes are slightly out of tune, especially towards the start of the song. It's probably just a case of needing to rehearse a bit more and do a few more takes - even really good professional singers usually need a few takes and/or comping of different takes to capture a great performance. At the end of the song the singing is really good, so it might even be just a case of needing to warm up a bit more before recording.
I also like the guitar when it comes in, it's quite surprising and adds a additional layer of feeling to the track.
@richardyot thanks for the feedback. Glad you enjoyed the song.
@JohnnyGoodyear Oh, it doesn't cut out. There's a quiet bit of noodling tacked on the end there for atmosphere. You must have had the volume down pretty low. Maybe I'll tap it up a bit. As for the old Spanish man/girl vocal, I'm off by at least two degrees on that possibility, but I at least know what to do were I to do a video. But I get your drift. Thx.
@orchardman - thanks for comments, and yep, the beauty with all of this is there is no right/wrong, and it is really good to both give/get feedback. It has made me look at my song closer too, and I will probably keep working on it later. Knowing myself I might butcher it and use pieces of it elsewhere unless I have an epiphany.
@crouchie - hehe, that made me smile too. Made me think of Snatch (the movie), in a good way. Where/who is "the spoken vocal" from? Very entertaining in any case. I like the entire song, and the lyrics. It also made me miss London (used to live there for 11 years). Good.
@aaronpc - I really like this. Spinning away on @JohnnyGoodyear 's comment, I too could imagine Spanish Gypsy-style vocals, perhaps something along the lines of Hacrides song Zambra ( though that song overall has quite a different tone to it, it is the singing I’m at 1:10-ish I’m thinking of, the girl), but that is just my mind running wild, I actually really like the song as it is already now.
EDIT: is there no way of turning off auto-linking in posts? Unless I re-write the entire post I can't remove the YT link but I also don't want it to auto-link and be "prominent" in my post as it is more of a side-track comment. Hmm.
Thanks for that. The vocal was written and spoken by me, though I'd do a couple of things differently if I were to revisit it..
!!
That's great! It was great! Extra well done then, I thought you had knicked/found it as a sample somewhere though I was amazed you had managed to fit it and the music so well together!
Ok, I hope I didn't miss anyone. Along with there being a lot of songs to cover as others have mentioned, the songs I reviewed earlier, and the ones below are really good songs. I mean high quality and all catchy tunes I am going to keep listening to. Lots of talented ios musicians! Thanks for sharing your music.
@BvsMV - I'm on my third listen. I love this song. They synth sounds are smooth and catchy. As are the melodies. @1:20, the quick melody there, it should have been longer. It was sweet. But, the synths that follow are mixed well and sound really good. The whole song is put together extremely well. Mix sounds perfect to me. Top notch song mate!
@hellquist - Nice peaceful track. The strings, they sound beautiful throughout the song, great way to start the song as well. The other synth sounds seem to drown out the nice strings/pads? at times. @ 3:00 my favorite part. The sounds fit nicely. Great track, I could imagine it in a Movie or Television show. Giving it some more listens. Nice work!
@orchardman - Very cool piano and guitar melodies. The lyrics are great. Your wife has a great voice. Maybe just a tad to high in the mix?. Maybe just a personal preference, I think less Reverb on vocals? Maybe not. The guitar leads are a nice surprise. The one panned left, man that's a gritty one. What did you use? Somehow it mixes pretty well with the clean rock lead on the right. Nice clean playing with the guitar leads. The ending seems a bit abrupt the fade needs to be tweeked. Again, your wife has a very nice voice, going again to listen to it. I love the piano outro, it feels the same as the intro, gives the song a familiar-arity to it. Good stuff!
@theconnactic - whoah............The drums remind me of so many 80's drum beats. Less than a minute in, this is such a fun song. Man, the guitar playing is phenomenal. Such beautiful tone, everytime you hit a squeel, they are mint. Ooooo a Bass solo. Smooth. I am officially jealous of your guitar playin ability. Nice synth outro, kind like the synth intro, which had me surprised, only cuz you have a guitar in your Avatar. Need some more listens on this one too. It's like it starts out as a 80's techno dance tune, but soon your guitar comes in, and it it turns into such a sweet song........
@rickwaugh - The two guitars one panned left and one right. Both softly shredding in my ears, and again at 1:11. They fit together so well, very very nice playing! At :46 sec........ I love the change. The acoustic picking with the simple piano and drum beat. It sounds really nice. 1:38 more of the acoustic with the piano, although maybe that's a guitar??? I am loving the panned guitar solo's, they fit together so well. Such a blast to listen to. Beautiful song, well put together. Beautiful ending as well. I know I used The B word twice in a row. The song deserves it!
@crouchie - cool groove. The drums, bass, funk guitar all fit perfect. Your talk over voice is very well timed. Things seemed to be mixed very well. The lyrics/words are great. so...what did the Banks do to everyone??? Just kidding, I caught it. You have a great talk over voice. What would you sound like singing? Try it. I like this song, a very fun listen. Wow, you have crammed a lot of lyrics into this song, it flows nicely, @ 4:27....Nice Arp. cool part.... Don't yell at Bill. He wants you to be happy. ............ Good stuff mate!
@aaronpc - I have no idea how you would fit vocals into this song! lol. I enjoyed the various keys/piano's/synths layered throughout. There were quite a few, but they each fit in nicely to be a part of the song. It's got an India kinda feel to it at times. on my 2nd listen, it's got jsut a bit of an edge to it, so I can't say it's a nice peaceful piece. But, it's got certain instruments that are deff. smooth and peaceful. I'm enjoying this song even more on my second listen. Well done!
@aaronpc, nice tune indeed! Lot's of good and very catchy short melodies dancing around the main riff, like in (good) TV series theme. Really liked it! Congrats.
P.S.: i still intend to listen to all the other songs in this thread until the end of january.
Just noticed you post a review of my song in your last song. Thank you very much indeed, @High5denied. I grew up listening to 80's dance tunes and new wave (stuff like Human League, Falco, New Order) as well as classic rock, metal and other guitar-oriented stuff. I've been trying to blend all this and also some jazz and funk (more recent passions) for quite some time: glad you liked the latest try.
All the best!
Thanks, @High5denied. I love splitting guitars like that. It really fills the headphones. I may have overdone the reverb/echo, but I'm pretty happy. Thanks for the love.
@theconnactic what a fantastic submission, a great blend of guitar playing and dance music that is perfectly executed. Love the dynamics, the song structure and the changes that keep it interesting, and the sheer excitement that comes out of the speakers. Very very well done, my favourite entry this month so far. Top marks for creativity and for musical technique.
@rickwaugh The playing is good and the mix is fine, my main criticism is that this feels like a jam more than anything else. It's got quite a lot going for it in terms of great playing, good structure, and interesting changes, but what it lacks is emotion and the sense that you are trying to communicate something - it sounds like you are enjoying playing the guitar more than telling a story or communicating a feeling. A musician's piece, showcasing great technique more than a song for the average punter IMO.
@crouchie another great track you've posted. Nice "rapping" and excellent job on the story/lyrics, and commentary on the state of the modern world. My only crit is that in at the end of the track the vocal gets lost a bit in the mix, it might need a bit of automation as the lyric is slightly harder to follow right at the end.
@richardyot, to a certain extent that's true of most of what I do, I guess. It's something I really need to work on.
This is just my personal opinion, so take it with a pinch of salt, but IMO you have all the tools you need in your arsenal: dynamics, playing ability, technical skills etc... You just need to harness them and say something with them
To use an analogy: you could read a story and admire the font, the layout, the great grammar and structure, but ultimately it's the story itself, and whether it moves you or makes you feel something, that really counts.
A lot of artists get caught up in technical details, and sometimes overlook the emotion and the message that should be at the core of any art. I think the reason this happens is basically out of enjoyment of the craft - if playing guitar brings you pleasure (for example) then sometimes you just want to play guitar. But for the listener, there needs to be something else, and that something is an emotional dimension to the music. Again this is just my point of view, and I don't claim to have any better a perspective than anyone else, so feel free to disagree.
