That's the point I think about limerence, it's indescribable and invisible to all but the parties involved, but wholly real yet cannot, by definition, be held or bought or made to last. Best drug on any market.
Ta @Jocphone you've obviously tried to find the positives in something that isn't really your thing. I'd say that was dashed good constructive criticism
I dunno, it's not black and white, there's a lot I do like about your piece and enjoy listening but find it difficult to hold onto something that stays in my head because I can't yet find a thread that binds it all together. Now, don't get me wrong, this same charge has been levelled at me by other forum members so I'm maybe fixating on an Issue that reflects on my own concerns but I do think the strength of SOTMC is in discussing these things.
Agree fully, but the Wikipedia article tries to kill it with science.
@TGiG thanks for your comments
I've started a new track yesterday, I hope I'll finish it before the end of february.
I'm sorry about the confusion, I'll start adding the track titles!
I actually was talking about Tetra in this micro review. The keys (organ) I was referring to is in the background around 1:16. The psychedelic parat is at 1:45. Anywhoo I really dig it!
Just in time for Valentines Day! Good luck @Jocphone!
Just a short selection, more to add later (hopefully)
@richardyot
I'm just commenting on the mix here. It's pretty muddy with a fair bit of low mid congestion and a lack of space (frequency wise). There's a few editing errors too. A better mix / approach would serve the song better methinks.
@crony
Pretty decent effort. Doesn't really develop though and I'm not that keen on the flangy / phasey snare. Good mix overall.
@JohnnyGoodyear
I think the plaintive piano works well with the wordage. As does the restrained FX on the voice.
@crouchie
I'm afraid I'm not to keen on this track stylistically, but it's very well done nonetheless, perhaps the voice is buried slightly in the mix at times.
@achromus
Best of the bunch, refined compositionally and tonally. An great example of using Gadget in a way that most people don't. Mr Sakamoto may well approve
OK, part 2, thanks to everyone who submitted.
@LostBoy85 - Demons:
I really was impressed with last months acappella performance and the new microphone giving more depth to your recording but I can't get on with this month's track at all. The combination of overdoing the effort and processing most of the dynamics out of your voice leaves it sounding lifeless and generic. Sorry mate, but I've heard you do much better than this and your fantastic singing talent deserves better treatment.
@TGiG - NiK0lA:
Thoroughly enjoyed the journey through your song here. Was quite surprised by the drums kicking in after the freer droning earlier passage and thought oh no it'd going to tuen into a generic dance track but you quickly allayed my fears. There's an element of music of the future, from the 70s, in places which works really nicely. It can be difficult to make more abstract soundscapes hold a persons interest but you achieved a balance that never strayed too far from being musical.
@ecamburn - just return:
Nice contrast between the instruments. Particularly liked the vocoder like swells and the churlish bass.
@Bluepunk - My Library is Closed:
Hey bluey, another lively and inventive track. I hope your partner is feeling better and things have settled down. Felt quite moved by you having her sing on this as well. Technically it's a good effort and keeps pace well and your vocal performance was entertaining as usual. The only thing that stood out a little for me was that the bass maybe aped the guitar a little too closely. Sometimes worth changing the rhythm, the emphasis or the note in the bass so that it fills out the sound a little. Otherwise great stuff.
@touchconspiracy - The crystalline level -clip:
I found the intro a bit boomy but did enjoy the erratic rhythm of it leading into the japanese water torture Found the flow of this one really pleasant and surprising in equal measure. It does change a lot but the changes built upon each other and the track as a whole gelled very well.
@richardyot - Days:
Loved the frenetic, slightly rushed feel of this Richard. I didn't think it suffered from not having a traditional bass instrument either. I thought the percussion in the verses could have done with a bit more clatter (the sort of drumming that Pete de Freitas was particularly good at) but the chorus is great, really catchy too. The only minor bugbear for me was that all the vocal lines in the chorus ended on the same note. It's just something that jumps out at me, it may not bother other people though.
@gburks - Golden Spiders:
Sorry gburks, I couldn't listen to this, I tried but couldn't see the point of it.
@JohnnyGoodyear - Bane:
You said this wasn't a SOTMC submission so I'm just saying I enjoyed it. You should try doing a series of these, I think it would be very strong.
@crony - Overextend:
Love the rough juddery bass on this. Is this the vocoder from the Korg iDS-10 by any chance? SOunds great whatever it is. Lots of atmosphere to this. Really top notch!
I've cut down on my workload a little by only critiquing the first track that someone has submitted in SOTMC this month. Don't mind if people post updates or a variation on something they demoed earlier in the month but am finding it a little hard going if people just treat this as a means to bump their soundcloud stats.
Thanks TGiG!
@jocphone Hey man,no worries,I really appreciate the honesty.Im always learning and trying to improve and I know that sometimes it's gonna be a miss and that's ok.The key thing for me is to just finish the song regardless so I can move on to the next thing.Imo theres nothing worse than a Dropbox folder full of half finished stuff!
@Jocphone thank you for your good wishes, very kind. Yes, I know what you mean about the bass & that's a a great point which I would like to experiment with. Maybe that "Reverse Chord" app would help me cos I haven't really got a clue about chords. If it sounds ok, it's in & a better understanding of "why" would maybe help.
Ah, I wondered where your vocal version was I wish you a happy, fun & full of love time with your incredible woman & look forward to listening to how this beautiful time in your life may influence your future songs.
@TGiG thanks for taking the time to comment mate.Its much appreciated.
@jocphone haha! Are we to expect some soppy ballads from you now eh? That would be awesome! It's a shame Monzos not here anymore as I'm sure he would love that aswell!
And it's always intended with the utmost respect. SOTMC is supposed to be about trying different things and you embrace that more than most.
Very tempting..
Thanks Bluey. I still intend to record some vocals for that track as I had some interesting things going on just with the guitar but I will just drop it on the forum some time.
@Jocphone thanks for your comments I used a Mininova from Novation for the vocoder. I also hae 2 apps for vocoding on Ipad, can't remember the names, seems all right also !
@Igneous1 thanks also for your comments ! True, sometimes I hide everything with too much effects, I like it faaaat...
Thanks mate. Intro deliberatly a shock..wake up time lol
Cheers for listening
Thanks mate..gadget all the way..
