@theconnactic Very interesting & different. Got a solid disco, easily danceable tune combined with some soaring lead guitar. I think you've successfully integrated the two together & at the right levels in the mix. It's great cost I can do my jigging around the house & at the same time perfect my air guitaring poses!
You've made a fun, happy song that I could hear blasting out at a colourful Hawaii Street carnival. I can imagine skipping down the Main Street waving hands in the air to your beat. Then, out of the blue, bumping into Slash wearing one of those pink & white flower garlands (is it a Lei)? to add the wonderful lead stuff! A very well played & constructed song that I thoroughly enjoyed sir. Crikey, you can play that there guitar alright.
@theconnactic great guitar playing. I'm getting a kinda disco Santana vibe. Love it
@rickwaugh great track, taking me back to my prog rock youth. Do I detect a Steve Howe influence in there?
@rickwaugh I listened this morning right after learning of Bowie passing. Seemed like a great tribute! Looking forward to your contributions and comments.
@orchardman, you're not the first one here who said it sounded prog. And I never thought of it that way. But yes, huge influence from Yes on me. I guess they no matter what you do, the things you love influence what you are.
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 hey dude,well honestly this one didn't grab me as much as others of yours,it's a nice minimal piece and it flows nicely and you have a nice breakdown around 4 mins.I actually really like the beat,the high hat pattern especially.I think I would have liked a little more going on or a build up to some sonic destination of some sort.As a minimal piece it's fine.My question would be,do YOU like it enough to keep working on it? Is it worth the time to YOU? I kinda feel that with you Matt there are a million GREAT tunes/ideas trying to get out of your head but like most of us time is hard to come by so u wanna spend it wisely.Just my rambling thoughts mate
Thank you very much indeed for your review of my song, @Bluepunk! Thank you as well, @orchardman.
@rmonkey, just listened to you song. Liked the overall feel of the song, and deciphered the lyrics right away without having to read them.
@Jocphone, loved the stereo usage. Very thoughtful.
@Igneous1, your song have an 80's feel that intrigued me. Liked a lot. If you told me you used a DX-7 I'd have believed.
Later I'll listen to some more songs. All the best!
Thanks @theconnactic
@rickwaugh I sympathise. How you are with your guitar tones, I'm the same with my drums.I will spend hours trying to get the right sounding snare, hats etc, & less time on the musical side. I haven't used a Percpad but I do tap/play the drum pads from Cubasis live then edit to hit that beat right on the nail.
It doesn't sound crap at all sir. They are great sounding drums & I'm sure after a few more songs you will be sounding like Cozy Powell. Even though I'm still a baby with all this stuff, if I can help with the drums any time (yourself or anyone) I would be glad to assist.
@High5denied hey dude,some lovely stuff in this one.Lots of nice little things happening and playing nicely with each other.Well done!
That being said,do not continue down this path...these are not the tunes you're looking for!! Haha! we've barely any bloody vocalists as it is!!!!
Haha yes & when you hear my latest offering, we may be another one down as you'll all be pleading for me to stick to the instrumentals in future!
Keep at it. We're starting a special 'Wardrobe Club' for warblers which will cater to the special needs and delicate emotions of the blurters here among us....
Speaking of which, it appears that the recently late Mr Jones had caught on to LostBoy's favoured singing enclosure, as shown by his Lazarus video.
I love that! The Wardrobe Club. I can see merchandising coming soon. I'm sure with your contacts in the rag trade, it won't be long till the tshirt is being worn & we have people stopping us in the street asking "wtf does that mean?" Mind, where I live, I'm sure they'll be more than happy to air their views that it's some underground, dodgy adult scene!
LostBoy needs to patent this quicky!
@BvsMV
Thanks for the feedback and kind words on the song. I think you are correct in, that when I mastered it, I did bring out the Bass in the EQ. It's been so long since I did it I'll have to go back and check the settings I used.
Thank you for listening and for the kind words. I know exactly what you mean about wanting it to do more. Move into something. I agree, but, not sure how to get ambient music to move into a different style/beat within the same song? Without there being an abrupt change.
Challenging yes, I am quite behind on them as well. Need to do some listening to the latest offerings!
Yes, quite a different song for me. It was for the synthmaster contest a few months back. I've never really done anything close to this style, so it is nice to hear people enjoyed it. It was cool for me that it has a bit of an Oriental sound to it, because I was trying to achieve that.
I used MidiMorphosis, and it seemed to work pretty well with my guitar. I jsut downloaded Midi Guitar 2 days ago, so I haven't tried it out yet.
Thanks again for listening!
lol, thank you kind sir! I don't think I will offer a lot more of the Ambient style. Maybe some..... But, I do plan on more songs with vocals, for sure. It is more difficult for me as well to get the vocals tracked at home. Need the kids to be gone. They are a noisy bunch . Wait till ya see what I have in store. I will no doubt need the continued thoughts, critiques, ideas you all are great at giving.
I notice there might be a post size limit so I have to cut this up somewhat:
Right, so as this is my first month doing this I also understood I am expected to review the other submissions. It has been great fun listening through it all, and it is great to see there are many submissions too, with good honest feedback, so I shall try and do the same (so, please don’t take offence). The comments below are just my honest comments, nothing more, nothing less.
Right. I can't copy/paste in my reviews. Hmm...I wrote them all in Evernote as I listened, and now I can't get them in here. Very strange.
It seems like when I copied and pasted from Evernote, despite picking "paste as text", it included the links to your profiles, and that limited my copy/paste abilities. When I copied/pasted everything but your usernames it all seemed to work. Now I know.
@rkmonkey - Right, this is not really my genre, but here is a wall of sound. Something in there made me think of Sisters Of Mercy at times. I’m actually quite impressed you keep the vocals in time. At times of what seems like random chaos it feels like the vocals is the bearer of where we are, surrounded by random sounds, which is an interesting take on things.
@Jocphone - It took a minute and a half to get going, but really liking what I’m hearing. I like the rhythm being constructed by something that isn’t obvious drums (possibly because I toyed with ideas like that myself, but I failed). The “weirdness” (in a good way) of some of the sounds make me think of early Autechre sounds. Being crap at vocals in general (I find vocals to be the most mysterious of all instruments, and I can’t “think it”) I have no advice to give on if you should put vocals on it or not though.
@Igneous1 - My head started nodding immediately. Good sound and good sounds. If anything I find the (regular) drums to be perhaps a bit too low in the mix (though not some of the percussive sounds). I also think it would have deserved a “bigger” ending though, or something that breaks it up, as it was a bit of the same for the last minute and a half, but that is possibly just me.
@achromus - Good stuff. I like the combination of dreamy ambient synths and “analog” instruments like piano. For some reason I got the feeling this could be the background music to a deep sea movie. No idea why (not a particular interest of mine), but hey. I like it, but as someone mentioned, there could have been an off-shoot instrument (or lead) at some point to break up/out a bit.
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 - Not unused to experimental music myself, I listen to it a lot, I found it somewhat confused when the drums entered as they sounded quite random (almost stochastic but in a minimal way). I thought it was a lost opportunity, so I guess my advice (as per your request) would be to do more adornment/more parts/more work on the drums, especially given that the drums get into a beat that is holding things together after that. The intro and the section around 4.20 work as ambient stuff by itself, so I was quite relieved when the drums returned they did so without the "random-start” but in a more focused way than their first appearance. I would probably have compressed the parts/sections to shorten the overall length though, as I did find it a tad too long. As a summary: I think the drums disturbed more than glue-ing it all together, as the ambient sounds were really nice as they were. So, work more on the drums.
@High5denied - Dreamy and lovely. I actually listen to quite a lot of stuff like this when I’m working, and this would slot right in. However, I wouldn’t mind something that breaks it up a bit somewhere. It could even be an actual break (silence is not used enough in music) as I’m not sure a loud or aggressive instrument/lead on top of everything would improve (just clarifying my definition “breaks it up” can be many things normally, but not here).
@BvsMV - Love seeing someone else using one of my absolute fave synths, TF7. A little underrated that one IMHO. I use it in most tracks in one way or another. So, on to the song, great use of harmonies and little snippets of melodies that play really nicely together! You do a thing I mostly do not (nor normally listen to), which is having a "feel-good" feeling about it (I’m normally a mellow moody bastard), and you really get away with it nicely too! Good job.
@orchardman - Drums and instrumentation definitely have a Portishead feeling to them. Good to hear a song with vocals too. Maybe it is my ears playing me up but I started looking for the “treble” knob, especially for the vocals but also for the overall mix. Being a guitarist myself I’m not totally keen on the combination of the distortion level to the song in general, but that is a very personal opinion. Good song with all the sections being clear too.
@theconnactic - Liked the intro. Sounds like a lot of (well played) guitars happening here, which is always good to hear. Good job.
@rickwaugh - Interesting overall sound. I can’t decide if I think it reminds me more of Opeth (their calmer moments) or Al Di Meola (Tirami Su era), but neither are bad comparisons I think. As I almost expected Al Di Meola to break in with a blistering solo at some point that might be missing.
Also, to all: thanks for the comments on my track! Always a little scary to “let go” of tracks for me, which is why I made that my NYE resolution: to release one track/month for this year (which will increase my release output by 1200% or something), and for that this initiative here in AB forum is great!
It's true, I guess I'm trying to make it into something else.
@hellquist, I don't know opeth, but I'll take Al Dimeola any day. I think I need a couple of three more notes in the solos.
Thanks. Regarding rhythms, I think once I stopped thinking of drums as 'someone else job' and started treating it as part of the song, it started becoming a more natural part of the songwriting process. I know what you mean about vocals but I'm trying to take the same approach with that too, just think of it as a different synth or noise maker.
Scary yeah, but thrilling too as they take on a new life.
@hellquist
Thanks for the comments. Please with any of my stuff do exactly what you did. It really helps me out. Makes my songs better with good feed back and suggestions.
@rickwaugh
Opeth is musical genuis. They are quite awesome.
@hellquist, thank you for the kind review of my song!
Welcome @hellquist Already, on this my first listen, those 3 notes/chords you play :
de da de with the slightly longer gap between notes 2 & 3 are the hook. It doesn't yank hard at my gills, instead it gently places the hook inside & caresses me towards the shoreline without any harsh tugging & yanking. After a few more listens the hook size increased & I'm sure you could have teased in & landed a huge whale on the strength of it!
I would have liked to have heard your "full on" version as well, just to hear if your song could have taken it. It's lovely & peaceful as it is & I was just interested to hear the difference. Looking forward to experiencing your future releases sir.
@orchardman I can only second what @rkmonkey has already said.....Wow & Portishead! Eerily, almost sultry opening piano leads me into the meat of your track. Your wife has a marvellous voice & it completely suits the style & sound of your heart felt tune.
Then......kerunch! That dirty lead guitar was unexpected candy to my ears. The viscousness of it appealed. Polar opposite the calm & peacefulness of what lies underneath. It was like "get out of my way nice stuff, I'm here to bludgeon you back into your box for a while." Really good shout sir & madam. Did I hear your voice harmonising at the 3.56 mark? I look forward to listening to more of that (your vocals) as well in future songs. Big from me.
