First submission. Although it's spent a lot of time getting polished in a desktop DAW, it has enough app DNA in it to merit inclusion. Currently instrumental, but mostly because I'm having a hard time figuring out how to get vocals in there— it's more of a minor key dirge than I normally do, and I have a bad habit of leaving off the vocals until the end and having to get out the musical shoe horn. Maybe it doesn't need vocals anyway. You tell me.

This thread has become quite the beast. I have little enough time to make music, much less digest this entire thread, but I'll try my best to contribute. Trying to get out of this creative bat cave I've dug for myself.

Great track and composition. Has a rhythm about it that others have stated well. On my third listen.

'Ello you lot!! Seems I've got some catching up to do eh? Nice to see some new folks on here grabbing the new year by the balls! I look forward to listening to the tracks I've missed shortly.

So this is my entry for this month.Another collab but this time with a producer buddy of mine who basically gave me a challenge of writing something to one of his tracks.I actually recorded most of the vocal a couple of months back at @richardyot old house. So a big thanks to him for letting me use a "real mic"!! (I finally got my own mic last month! Woop woop! :astonished: )

I wrote the song about a mate of mine whose having a rough time due to his wife being an alcoholic. Please give me both barrels in regards to critique as this is really a first draft.I can't do anything about the music but anything to do with melody and lyrics would be very helpful.Cheers!

If I keep on about your voice my wife will start wondering. You are a pro man. Another great one.

Every month for a year now I've regrettably avoided the 100+ post SOTM threads because I never finish a flippin' song. So, new year, new resolution, I'm making myself post one rather I like it or not. I just downloaded the soundcloud app and look forward to checking out last year's music! So without further ado

Very cool entry. I know what you mean and I am glad you posted. It is your creation it works.

Great pick up of the helicopter in my tune. Thanks for listening and your comment.

First SOTM contribution here. Thumbjam, Auxy and Impaktor all figured into the mix.

I look forward to hearing what folks think and listening to the other contributions.

Nothing but a great tune here. Congratulations on getting one on the board.

Thanks for the comment of my track.

Happy & peaceful 2016 to you all. This is quite possibly the closest to a love song that I will ever make! It's dedicated to Mrs Bluepunk who had a crap 2015. Mental health issues resulting in some stays in hospital under the dreaded "sectioning orders". I mention this otherwise you wouldn't have a clue what the words are on about. She lives her artist life right on the very, very edge & sometimes falls off. I have even tried a very basic solo for the first time in her honour....yikes!
This months songs have all been wonderful so far. Sorry to have broken that run!
Apps played: Guitarism, ifretless bass, Cubasis, ipad internal mic.

I'm a believer and ready to join your band and hit the road. You gots something going on...

Hello... I have much catching up to do!

Here's something for this month... It actually started with the midi from the sketch ('Adventure') that I put up at the start of the month. But it's turned out very different.

Everything done in Gadget (mostly Kiev and some Kingston) with the spoken word stuff done using the voice synth in Korg iDS-10. Then various things done in Auria (including some wow and some masterrecord)...

Feedback much appreciated. I'll get through mine before the end of the month as always.

Always look forward to your creation. Amazing that the darkness comes out. As you know you have many fans who expect your greatness. This is another example and pure in a way from the struggle.

  • Forgive my silence...

    Thank you very much, @rkmonkey!!

    All the best!

  • @touchconspiracy, that's indeed a great track. The basses growl and roar on my speakers. Liked it a lot!

  • @achromus Lovely track! Thank you! I especially love bass and sweeps around 00:51 secs and the piano a bit later on. The guitar is great but a bit loud. Made my headphones rattle...but I don't mind ;)

@Matt_Fletcher_2000 - Adventure: of a robo-tripping glitched out mechanical lullaby! I absolutely love the breakdown part at 03:50 even though I really, really, enjoy the glitchy breakbeats! Excellent work!

@High5denied I have to admit, I was thrown off by both the title and the artwork of the track! I was pleasantly surprised that it was neither "chaotic" or an acoustic campfire ballad. Your song is very soothing, thank you!

@BvsMV Ahh, I totally love the introduction but the turn to the great synthy bit was a great move! Well done!

@hellquist Great track! I really dig the first sec, at first I hear the bass and then it starts to sound like a hang. My favorite part is at 02:17 when the echoing synth comes out from the sonic depths!

@orchardman Wow, just wow! Not only is the music great but the vocals are excellent! I really love the reverbs and echoes throughout the track. They really accompany the lyrics quite nicely. And the solo?! Shit that put the biggest smile on my face! Superb track, I love it!

@theconnactic Holy cow! This song is awesome! I think it's amazing how well the guitar goes with the backing tracks. I had no idea that the guitar was coming, it was such a pleasant surprise to an already great sounding intro! Oh and the bass "solo" part is perfection! Great work!

@rickwaugh This is a fantastic song! The (acoustic) guitar at parts subtly sounds like a clock ticking to me at times. The overall sound makes me think of the 7 dwarves mining in the caves around the clock! I totally didn't know how you were going to bring it all together at the end but you excited it brilliantly!

  • @theconnactic, love the middle/eastern oriental break. Especially after that totally flunked out beginning, interesting combo. Are you using amp modelling for your guitar, or are you micing an amp? Because it sounds great. Song moves, love the feel and the beat.

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000, that's a wonderful dark bit of work. Great movement. Would have liked a break, something different, somewhere, to grab the attention. But the mix was good, beat was excellent.

  • Thanks, @tgig. That's an image that had been brought to mind before, going to be there when I listen in the future.

Thanks @rkmonkey I've already got my "visitor" festival tickets for the summer. If we're quick, they can be changed to "Artist" ones! Just got to remember to pack my Zimmer frame in the rucksack.

  • Lots of good work this month by almost everyone but yours truly. Still hopeful (ever hopeful), but am off to Tampa for a few long days (work) and find it hard to believe I will find the inspiration there that I haven't managed to find here these past few weeks. Hey, you never know...ipad with be in attendance (of course :).

  • Thanks! I dont know..it just flowed all in one go! Im pretty happy and surprised

New Years Day creation. Not my usual but including lyrics because they may be hard to decipher.

    It's been ten years
    Whisper softly in my ear
    Needle, fingernails
    Penetrate my skin
    Ten years gone
    Can't take
    One more bite

    Buried deep inside
    Buried deep inside

    Taste it before I feel
    Penetrate my skin
    Taste it before I feel
    This time I'll win

    First kiss first love
    First time I've felt this
    First kiss first love
    Can you feel my kiss

    Fingernails

    Ten years gone
    Buried beneath my soul
    Needles in my skin

  • Its good matt..kind of reminds me of early warp stuff

Im enjoying hearing you go out on these experimental journeys

    Happy New Year SOTMers.

Sorry for my general absence over December - ended up being a pretty busy month in the real world.

I made this as a kind of early rough track. I'd really like feedback on:

    • if you think this stands as a (minimal) track on it's own - go mix and polish it in Auria
    • needs more adornment / more parts / more work on the drums etc.etc.
    • put it down as an experiment and move on - there's not a lot there

As usual i've got a poor perspective on my own stuff!

Made with Elastic Drums and Animoog - into MTD (using Bassline as a sequencer) ... on my iPhone no less - making use of the lovely Link.

  • Very peaceful..i liked it!

    Okee-Dokeey,

I'm re-working my song from last month-----High5Denied-------. Taking all yer comments into account. Upping the Bass, Re-tracking the vocals, shortning my phrases, mostly through the Chorus. Took out the pops that were heard, which was a weird one. It was part of a drum track from Rock DM. Pro-q helped out with that, using the left - right option, I stuck a high cut filter(I think) just on the left, and Boom popping gone!

Thanks everyone for the comments and critique on it, it has helped a lot. I jsut need to find time to re-track the vocals. Then I'll post it again, and hopefully it will be more polished.

Oh, also, I changed it to a Country-Techno song instead of Rock. It seemed to fit better. Just kidding.

    Here be mine:

It's a song I did for the Synthmaster contest a while back. Hence, all Synthmaster synths. All played through Midimorphosis. I re-mixed it a bit, and re-mastered it too.(I use those terms lightly) ;) I'm still learning a lot so ya. Auria used for the lightly termed stuff........

@TGiG - lurvely intro. Great drums intro too. I actually really like the vibe of it all, but then it starts flipping out on my ears a bit. It feels a little bit like you had an idea and wasn’t sure where to take it, so you create chaos instead. :)

@ecamburn - heh, the start of the drums surprised me, which made me smile. Lots of nice good little nuggets of riff’s and melodies in here. I like the mix. For some reason the songs makes me think of travel, perhaps sitting in a train and watching the ever-changing world pass by outside the window. I like it, good job!

@Bluepunk - I really like the arrangement of the song. I also like that there is vocals. That is one raw bass (in a good way) too! The thing I’m finding myself wishing for is perhaps a fattening/widening of the overall mix, but otherwise the levels are good. I liked the song overall. I don’t think you should put yourself down at all, that was good!

@theconnactic - some nice guitar playing again. Again it makes me think of Al Di Meola at parts. There is however no real song structure as such, with a clear verse/chorus, which I kind of miss, as there isn’t something that returns and creates the feeling of recognition. Even after a few listens, it is only due to me knowing there will come a break at some point, but the path there isn’t clear. As someone mentioned, as good as the playing is, it feels a bit like a jam which showcases your guitar skills, which admittedly are great. :)

@Matt_Fletcher_2000 - This is great! Great arrangement, I love the emotional clash between ambient relaxed floaty feeling and the closeness of the spoken word, which creates tension. Also, I really like the bass, not only the notes but also when you have decided to not play it. One of the most under-used music techniques is silence and when NOT to play, but you do it perfectly here, which then also create dynamics and interest when it does come in/back to play.

@touchconspiracy - heh, if you create things like this in an hour this one song/month “challenge” isn’t really challenging for you I guess? :) If anything I sort of miss a song structure, it feels more like a mixing session in a club, where all the sounds are good and mixed together nicely, but it could go on evolving for hours I would guess..

  • Lol, isolated incident..usually takes hours to finish a track

It just flowed very fast...and i think the way gadget is, is that tracks are so easily made with it and i think the scene sequencer is mostly to blame

As far as song structure goes, i feel that its too short, everything is condensed and it all happens fast, then its over. Unusual because most of my tracks are kind of progressive

    Thanks for listening!

It's a somewhat battered Marshall JTM-30 and a Rat, then FF Saturn after the live recording. Thank you very much for the question, review and compliments, @rickwaugh!

@hellquist Thank you kindly. If you have any quick fixes for fattening up a mix I'd appreciate any advice on that because I feel that myself as well. Cheers again.

  • Omg this has been a trial and no denying it. Have struggled with this one and there have been various versions I've done. Still not confident which is why I've snuck it in at the end of January.
It's a bit different to other stuff I've done. Not sure about the vocal tbh, may be some, ahem, pitching issues in there (which I think is why it's a bit buried in the mix). I sang it in the morning and I've never been a morning singer. I get v little time to do music so when it's done, it's in!
Interested in your thoughts, but apprehensive too...

  • @touchconspiracy An hour! Wow, you've got a hell of a lot of great stuff going on & your flow is definitely flowing well. I agree about the bass. Mmm, lush indeed. The vocal fits perfectly & when that dripping tap sound comes in opposite those vocals (0.52) is adds a different texture, especially with the bass underneath. The change of tempo over the last 30 secs is excellent & forced me into a jig whilst the bass(es) like it did to @theconnactic speakers, threatened to eat my headphones! I like that.

  • @touchconspiracy not bad for an hour's work :)

It takes a little bit too long to get going for my liking though, the intro could be cut in half at least. Once the bass comes in at 1.30 the track feels like it's finally got going, but by now we are half way through. The section at 2.20 is probably the best bit with that lovely wobble lead, I could definitely hear more of that. Then the track ends, it's quite short and with several sections that are quite varied - I would have arranged it a little differently with a shorter intro and done more with the end section, but overall it's a good piece with some nice ideas.
