Been a terrible month. Placid, polite, productive. Wholly acceptable in a corporate manner. Not picked up a book, written much of a line, made even more than a bit of a song. Have traveled for work. Seen nothing. Worked. Done nothing.

This is not an SOTMC submission; I don't have anything to submit. Consider it more a (very) small act of accurately descriptive good faith:

Says it all @JohnnyGoodyear As Chesterton said "Once I planned to write a book of poems entirely about the things in my pocket. But I found it would be too long. The age of the great epics is past."
I hope February allows you a less corporate but a more creative time. That bloody rat race!

  • @TGiG Thanks, I've been really into turning tracks like that lately

  • @richardyot hey man, nice song! Nothing wrong with going back to rock! The vocal was nice and present and I liked the melody a lot.The production was a mixed bag for me on this one (no pun intended:) the drums were buried to my ears and there seemed to be a weird hiss from the get go?? That may have been intended? The guitar work was nice and the vibe was cool.Your singing keeps on improving. This one sounds like it could be in a Tarantino movie

  • @LostBoy85 thanks for feeding back. I think the hiss you're hearing is one of the four synths that are buried in the mix. If I still like the song in a few month's time (unlikely) then I might have a go at remixing it, and removing the buzzy synth.

I mix mostly in mono (with the odd stereo delay), and I tend to bury things in the mix and use bus compression to muddy things further. I think it's an interesting approach (it's influenced by My Bloody Valentine, and also obviously Phil Spector), but I still need to get a lot better at it.

  • @richardyot hey man, don't remove anything on my account. If that's what you wanted then it should stay. Its cool that you keep trying these different techniques.Good on ya mate!

I'm glad I read this before commenting. I liked the song, but was going to say it seemed like a step backwards production wise. I knew there had to be some intentionality in it somewhere with your love for shoegaze. That being said, maybe do try removing that extra synth. With that buzzing gone, it might free up some room for the other elements. Overall, you are definitely honing your own sound and song structure. Good work.

  • @Bluepunk Another nice kick in the balls! This month seemed beefier for lack of a better term. I like the little nuances and changes you are throwing in, both vocally and instrumentation. I honestly think with your current progression that a logical step would be a Fall type post punk sound, whenever you feel done with just straight kicking us. Continually Impressed that you just do it with apps and the internal mic!

  • @crouchie, I like that piece quite a bit. It's got a great feel, a bit Peter Gabriel, which is I feel I like a not. Love the melody and words, and your voice works well there. I'd bring it up in the mix. The song does seem a bit long, not enough variety there for almost six minutes. Love the percussion, the metallic sounds you have going on in the background, very cool.

  • @richardyot, that's a very 60s Brit band sound you have going there. Here some Byrds in their, too. It's a good song, but I find the rhythm guitar is just too much the same, and too much of the song, all the way through. Needs a bit of variation for me, or maybe even just being a bit lower in the mix. Perhaps a little synth or lead in the breaks would help out, as well.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear, it was short, but very cool. Are those your lyrics?

My entry for the month - it's a bit more "rock" than I intended and so feels like a bit of a regression, it's more like the music I was making a year ago rather than my more recent stuff, but that's how it came out.

That has really grown on me. Melody is great, love that wall of guitar thing. Probably would've liked a bit more bass. That solo and feedback at the end was top. Great stuff

@crouchie just gave your second track a couple of goes. This track is right up my street mate.A nice moody piece with really excellent music.I loved the distorted whirly that comes in towards the end and my fave bits were what you did with the backing vocals.Very clever and technical stuff. Its a little long for me and Yeah some of the singing was a bit pitchy in places & I also thought the Vocal could have come up a bit mate aswell, but excellent effort and kudos for posting it despite your doubts.Singing in the morning is a bitch man! It's alright if your gonna sing a Barry White song though!! :D I always have pitching issues and the only way I combat it with my set up is to just sing it again and again...etc...then I get a decent pitch but maybe not quite the emotion I was looking for so I sing it again...and so on.Point is it takes a hell of a lot of practice. So just keep at it man!

This is an interesting interview with ed sheeran I discovered recently that reinforces my point.

Thank u, great advice, and cheers for your kind words about the tune. I just need to be more patient I think, like u say keep singing things through. Barry White song eh? Now you've got me thinking...

  • @richardyot I listened again with my good headphones on instead of me earbuds and the clarity was much better. I actually really like that buzzy synth now! Good job with that style, and I think if you would have pushed the bass, and synth up a little it would be a very big track.

  • @crouchie I love knot! The vocals in this are beautiful. I love the drums, the glitch, the electronics. Nothing feels overdone. Good job this month!

  • Right, playing catch-up here.

@crouchie - This has my interest from the get-go, it sounds exciting, perhaps because it is sounds different to our previous submissions. Again, I love that there are vocals. I think they are good too, I would really like to have them louder in the mix though. Nice beats going. Nice, and well-timed, break for keeping dynamics going, just before the break came I had looked at the end time which usually is a “right, how long is this thing?” thought, but the break re-sets my timer for going bored. Good. Nice vibe, good song, well done!

@richardyot - As with most music I hear, I get feelings and images. This one made me think “road movie”, but unlike the previous entry I said that, here I am thinking riding in a big American car on desolate dry roads, with the classic views of tarmac and white road paint mixed with scenes of the landscape. Go figure. Anyways, soundwise I was looking for the treble button as it feels a little bit of lacking in the crisp-ness department. Again, I liked the break (1:12 or something) but I would have liked it not sneaking back in, but more having a “let’s go again” feeling. I love the western guitar at the end!

@gburks - right, sample mash-ups are not really my thing and I actually forgot I was reviewing twice as I was thinking it was the radio on and got distracted (admittedly by kids etc), so it took me 3 times just to get through it once, as it is looooong. Sound wise it sounds great though. Well, obviously so great I thought I was having radio on (which admittedly isn’t often in my case).

Otherwise for me I today made a guitar video, my first ever, for a competition entry, just for fun. I also needed to get some guitar out of my system, as it has been building up, and I have yet to find a suitable mix where I can both do my dark ambient stuff and still use my guitar in a sense that makes me satisfied. Also, I wanted to get the thing out to not distract me for my February song. :)

You can see my guitar thingy here if that is of interest (recorded in Auria Pro with Bias FX, a bunch of FabFilters and StereoDesigner):

  • @BvsMV and @hellquist really, loads of thanks for your comments and I love the fact u felt it was a little different. Rounded the month off on a high note for me, v grateful

Thank you very much @BvsMV because that's exactly what I'm trying to achieve................A virtual kick in the nads through music. Nothing too technical (because I can't) & yes, I'd like to revisit that post punk era. Maybe some type of punk/ska lash up as well. I've always got your "The Lights go passing by" to reflect, relax & recharge after my noise. Thanks again.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear Probably your best spoken word piece to date for me, very nice lyrics, intriguing and amusing, and a nice piano accompaniment. I could picture this as the ending of an album of sad songs. And well done for still producing something despite all the other stuff going on.

Thanks - that's a great point, it would indeed have been much better if the song resumed with a lot more oomph. It's down to crappy drum programming on my part.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear nice little snippet! :) just a small thing, a few of your words had some juicy little mouth noises Inbetween. Now I wouldn't have even noticed this, this time last year, but in trying to get better, this is something I've tackled with my own stuff:) simple fix, just trim or fade the bastards off!

  • Just updated the front page and the SoundCloud. 24 entries this month, amazing. Keep 'em coming and don't slack off. I wonder if there is a New Year's resolution or two behind the increased activity this January? If so keep at it, you can give up the gym but keep posting songs :)

I'm all about the juicy mouth noises me :) But when I rise up (singing?) from beneath this slough of despond I will snip away....thanks for the nudge.

Great idea though. Could get creative like Yossarian in the infirmary and start censoring different words out to change the meaning of the piece.

  • Nice little song, mr. @JohnnyGoodyear. You have a good voice!

Thanks Mister Rick. Yup. I am cursed with an endless gift for doggerel, drives the wife bananas :)

I've always been in favor of Yossarian. I have a hunch that if he'd been English he would have been a national hero by now (in England)...

  • @LostBoy85 thanks for the feedback. I can see why the drums might get lost in the mountain of reverb. As for you track, holy shit! That was some pro stuff. You continue to surprise with your genre of the month club. Forgive me for not sifting, but what did you use to make that?

  • @TGiG wow, that was amazing. Super original and bug sounding. It kept making me think this is what Super Mario soundtrack would sound like if it came out today. Modern beats with 8 but weirdness and pretty arpeggios. Nicely done, I think I listed three times. In following you now, more like that please.

@richardyot, liked your song: it reminds me of 90's alternative rock, like Sugar or Toad The Wet Sprocket. You could have taken a little more time in the mixing stage, since the bass and drums are buried (the bass is critically buried) and the bottom end is a little blurry in general, and there is what seems to be an editing mistake at 0'53'' (the end of the "at last" line). The general performance is fine; the songwriting and arrangement choices were quite good, and the lyrics are really interesting. Keep it up!
