  • @crouchie I think this one has a lot of potential, but needs a bit more love, mostly with the mix I think. The pitching issues on the vocals are fairly minor, you could fix them with a couple of punch-ins I think, it's really only the odd note here and there, not entire phrases. The vocal melody is really good and that's why I think it would be worth trying to fix the small errors and raise the voice in the mix so that it can take centre-stage.

I like the music as well, it's nicely experimental and contrasts well with the voice. The vocal samples/pads are cool as well. I think if the voice could be mixed louder this would be a really great track.

@Bluepunk, you're indeed a good listener! Glad to know you that you liked the subtleties of the mix, such as the soloed guitar riff at the end, which was one of my favourite details of this song btw. Thank you very much indeed!

Dude, nice track! I loved that synth solo with the guitar line harmonizing with it! Normally I don't listen to stuff like this, but I never started to lose my attention because of all the subtleties in the mix. I loved the break style drums here, little organ stabs there, and just the small guitar licks throughout.

Thanks @richardyot always v helpful. You know how it is, you just lose faith in a song and so can't hear what is good or bad any more. This one has really wound me up. It was only when a mate of mine listened to it and liked the vocal that I even thought about putting it on here. I like some of the backing but just wasn't getting on with my voice. He, on the other hand, only liked the vocal but couldn't get on with the tune (something about the chords being discordant, but I chose to ignore that ;-) ). I'll put it away for a bit and see if I come back to it in a few months. Good learning though. I need to get to listening to the rest of this months submissions. Never any time...!

  • P.S.: I just made another song, but I'll wait for the February's SOTM to post it here, since I have already two entries for january and don't want to kidnap the thread. Anyone that is curious about it, though, can listen to it now on my Soundcloud page.

  • @TGiG hey man,it appears that I initially missed your track! Apologies! I just gave it a couple of spins.I liked the change from the intro into the main meat and potatoes.Very nice! And I admire all the technical skill that went into making something like this. You did a lot of different tricks that I have no clue how to do myself. If I'm honest though, for me I kinda wanted it to take me to other places.(a melody change up I think..not sure) However, take that with a pinch of salt as Instrumentals are not really what I listen to everyday.Keep 'em coming mate!

  • @touchconspiracy hey man, nice work for such a short time! I wish I could just write a song in an hour!! Lots of different things going on which kept me interested.I esp liked the lead synth around 2.15.Nice!

'Ello you lot!! Seems I've got some catching up to do eh? Nice to see some new folks on here grabbing the new year by the balls! I look forward to listening to the tracks I've missed shortly.

So this is my entry for this month.Another collab but this time with a producer buddy of mine who basically gave me a challenge of writing something to one of his tracks.I actually recorded most of the vocal a couple of months back at @richardyot old house. So a big thanks to him for letting me use a "real mic"!! (I finally got my own mic last month! Woop woop! :astonished: )

I wrote the song about a mate of mine whose having a rough time due to his wife being an alcoholic. Please give me both barrels in regards to critique as this is really a first draft.I can't do anything about the music but anything to do with melody and lyrics would be very helpful.Cheers!

Really impressed. Got a great commercial vibe and v catchy. Your vocal is great as always. The backing/harmonies fill it out beautifully. There was something that just didn't quite sit right in the middle 8/drop down, but that's just picky. Brilliant work.

Every month for a year now I've regrettably avoided the 100+ post SOTM threads because I never finish a flippin' song. So, new year, new resolution, I'm making myself post one rather I like it or not. I just downloaded the soundcloud app and look forward to checking out last year's music! So without further ado

Like that retro, sparse electronica feel, my sort of thing (although I can never bloody get it to work myself, so hats off to u). Lovely clear sounds and great distortion at the end. For me it just gets a bit too busy and discordant (which would appear to be my word of the month) in the middle, could do with one of the pads being stripped out and giving it a bit more space. However I love the discordant (there it is again) bit + the stuttering effect at the end, it really works there. Not trying to be a twat, it's a great tune, wish I could do that. Cheers

First SOTM contribution here. Thumbjam, Auxy and Impaktor all figured into the mix.

I look forward to hearing what folks think and listening to the other contributions.

Lovely stuff. I love impaktor, gives a bit of an organic feel. Like the progressive style and it constantly fluxed to keep you interested. That's something I really struggle with. Really nice feel, would like the bass up a bit to give it a warmer feel. Only complaint was that open hi hat sound, bit too harsh. Great tune though.

Happy & peaceful 2016 to you all. This is quite possibly the closest to a love song that I will ever make! It's dedicated to Mrs Bluepunk who had a crap 2015. Mental health issues resulting in some stays in hospital under the dreaded "sectioning orders". I mention this otherwise you wouldn't have a clue what the words are on about. She lives her artist life right on the very, very edge & sometimes falls off. I have even tried a very basic solo for the first time in her honour....yikes!
This months songs have all been wonderful so far. Sorry to have broken that run!
Apps played: Guitarism, ifretless bass, Cubasis, ipad internal mic.

Fking Magic!!! Love that. All about that growling bass in terms of the sound, great work. Echo an earlier comment about how well that song is structured. Enjoyed it on repeat listens. Brilliant

Can I submit another? Here's one that I started earlier tonight in my Mac and just finished on Auria Pro:

    Have a nice week everyone,
    Dimitri.

Great playing, big respect again. Rock not my thing but this is a great tune. Like the drum transition from the break beat to rock and back again. Great stuff.

Hello... I have much catching up to do!

Here's something for this month... It actually started with the midi from the sketch ('Adventure') that I put up at the start of the month. But it's turned out very different.

Everything done in Gadget (mostly Kiev and some Kingston) with the spoken word stuff done using the voice synth in Korg iDS-10. Then various things done in Auria (including some wow and some masterrecord)...

Feedback much appreciated. I'll get through mine before the end of the month as always.

Really like that, stand out is the beat, lovely little stuttering thing. Brilliant. Like the sinister distorted vocal, gives it an other-worldly edge. Great use of Gadget which I still find a bit hit and miss (but don't tell anyone I said that...). Great tune.

  • @touchconspiracy said:
    Forgive my silence...

    Something totally different from myself

Made in about one hour in the holy grail that is gadget

That's bloody marvellous. Sometimes it all just goes right eh? It's the breakdowns I really like. Great flow, great sense of space and the mix is nicely done. Good stuff

  • Thanks @crouchie you're too kind. Glad you enjoyed it & thanks for having a few listens.

You should be incredibly confident about "Knot" & there was no need to just sneak it in at the end of this month. It's worthy of being released at the start of the month with a huge launch party as well. More understated than "Bill" but just as catchy. What apps did you use? Some fabulous sounds & particularly liked whatever you used to get that solo at the end. Your singing has a nice tone & well done on cracking it out in the morning. Another top song you've created & it, along with Bill, has ensured a great start to your musical year.

  • My entry for the month - it's a bit more "rock" than I intended and so feels like a bit of a regression, it's more like the music I was making a year ago rather than my more recent stuff, but that's how it came out.

Squeaking my January contribution in just before month's end... I know the emphasis here is usually on originals, but here is an original-ish live loop mash-up of David Bowie riffs, I performed live at "Memphis Does Bowie" tribute concert in which we raised over $20,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.

Loopy, Gadget, IK VocaLive harmonies, Vox electric ukulele through ToneStack

Download the four-song EP for free on Bandcamp, or name-your-price with all proceeds going to St. Jude: https://infinitystairs.bandcamp.com/album/golden-spiders-ep

  • No comments on the mash up but congrats on raising 20k for a good cause!

  • @Bluepunk thanks v much for that, v kind, glad u liked it. It's done in Auria Pro (I think it's great but a few CPU issues even using an iPad pro!), with the base and 2 pads from Twin. Beats from Beathawk and Seekbeats, the backing vocal sample was chopped from another song of mine in Abu Dhabi on Gadget. I then got totally fed u with it and chucked each stem through Volcano/Saturn/Timeless until I started to like it again. That distorted bit at the end (which is much favourite bit!) is actually a tinkling loop done with xynthesizer that has been fked up with a Volcano filter. I have lots of apps, and yet I know almost nothing about them...! Thanks again for your interest! Looking forward to your next one.

Thanks. "Mash-up" might be a bad name for it, insinuating a DJ mix. This is all live looped performances besides some samples of Fame chopped up and played in Gadget/Bilbao on an electronic drum set...

  • @richardyot & that's how it should stay....how it came out. I love this. A bit more rock? Yep & I like that you've revisited your harder edge while retaining your softer, more melodic side. A fabulous fusion. You've got the power & similar to Buzzcocks with the vocal prowess & beauty of Teenage Fan Club. I will need to check out some of your music from 12 months ago, especially if you were churning out music like this.

What drums did you play because you have the knack of pairing the drum sound to the song style. The chorus is catchy & I found my head thrusting forward on the off beat (like Mr Weller does). It's foot tappingly good. Love that "crooked smile" line. Nice guitar work & the feedback at 1.10 is yum.

It's been a bumper month of great songs & you've added your hat to that. Three minutes of deliciousness indeed sir.

  • @Bluepunk I should have added the caveat that my songs from 12 months ago also tended to be played out of time and sung out of tune, so at least this effort is a little more technically competent. I would point you to my SoundCloud but I deleted the old ones because they were rubbish :)

The drums were done with the new Drumperfect Pro, I just grabbed one of the canned patterns and altered it a bit, with variations of the same throughout the track. Feedback and solo were done in Geo Shred, I was too lazy to actually use my guitar for those. Actually you should check out Geo Shred if you haven't already, it's great for playing "guitar solos".

Thank you. Right, I can see where my spare time at the weekend is going. Drum perfect Pro & Geo Shred. I have both but haven't even opened them yet..........smacked wrist for me! Can't wait to play actual feedback on Shred. Can't believe you did that on an app! Doubly excited now!
Great song, with a hard beat & a melodic, hooky chorus...........& of course........scrumptious feedback!

@gburks amazing stuff! You've done a brilliant job on the seamless Bowie songs. Many congratulations on your efforts both musically & on raising so much cash.
Memories of a Free Festival was my personal fav. The music really suited the title.

  • @gburks a nice tribute to the Thin White Duke, and well done for raising all that money to a good cause. Some of the vocals are off-pitch but it was a live performance so that can be excused. The energy of the moment has translated well into the recording, it sounds like it was a fun night.

  • @theconnactic Hey man, just gave your second tune a spin. You have some bad ass guitar skillz!! I liked your choice of drums aswell mate.Congrats on having a prolific January! here's to hoping it continues throughout the year for you.Nice work.

  • Thank you very much indeed, @LostBoy85!

@crouchie just gave your second track a couple of goes. This track is right up my street mate.A nice moody piece with really excellent music.I loved the distorted whirly that comes in towards the end and my fave bits were what you did with the backing vocals.Very clever and technical stuff. Its a little long for me and Yeah some of the singing was a bit pitchy in places & I also thought the Vocal could have come up a bit mate aswell, but excellent effort and kudos for posting it despite your doubts.Singing in the morning is a bitch man! It's alright if your gonna sing a Barry White song though!! :D I always have pitching issues and the only way I combat it with my set up is to just sing it again and again...etc...then I get a decent pitch but maybe not quite the emotion I was looking for so I sing it again...and so on.Point is it takes a hell of a lot of practice. So just keep at it man!

This is an interesting interview with ed sheeran I discovered recently that reinforces my point.

  • Been a terrible month. Placid, polite, productive. Wholly acceptable in a corporate manner. Not picked up a book, written much of a line, made even more than a bit of a song. Have traveled for work. Seen nothing. Worked. Done nothing.

This is not an SOTMC submission; I don't have anything to submit. Consider it more a (very) small act of accurately descriptive good faith:
