  • I'll be heading over to the Korg Forums to feed them with my thoughts after a fiddle around a bit more.
But darn, why are the transport controls hidden when the 'Gadget' is in fullscreen mode :(

  • in terms of multi channel midi support, I found this on KORG`s website:

Although we also wanted to support the multichannel midi support this time, we realized it takes time to develop to stabilize it...sorry about that. But, it will be supported in the next update along with our new MIDI controller shipment, so please stay tuned!

    That's really cool!

Using it on my iPhone 5. Took a bit to get used to, but it is very usable for me. But I use an external keyboard with it (or use the sequencer), so I would probably have problems trying to record with the on-board keyboard.

Of course, with an external keyboard its totally usable, the sequencer not so much in my opinion, maybe it takes some time to get used to I just tried for a little while.

Metronome count in not working, and the tempo of my song keeps getting reset to 120bpm each time I open Gadget.

    :/

    EDIT:

This was from Ableton Link being on. Turned it off all is good.

  • Man, this is a total game-changer, in my opinion. It's not getting the hype that a new iPad app release would get because Gadget is a known commodity and many people serious about iOS music apps already have an iPad and probably Gadget installed on it.

But last week there wasn't even really a workable MIDI editor on iPhone, and now we have arguably the best one (piano roll style, I mean), PLUS it's like getting a dozen new instruments that previously weren't on iPhone.

In terms of usability, it's about as good as you could hope for on an iPhone 6s screen. The truth is that I was never a fan of the Gadget keyboards even on iPad. It's one of the few apps that defaults to a ribbon-style, scale-based controller, and doesn't even try to pretend that it has a functioning keyboard (you can set it to chromatic and attempt it, but it's a mess). But plug a MIDI controller into there, and it works amazingly. I can throw a Korg NanoKey2 in my bag with a simple USB adapter and have an amazing MIDI sketchpad, as well as basically a full electronic music studio using only things that I carry in my pocket or in a laptop bag. Amazing.

For those unclear, it does export raw MIDI data and separates it into tracks (if you send it into AudioShare, for example). It also has DropBox integration for uploading MIDI and audio files, and you can export individual audio tracks or full masters as audio files using ACP. Add that to AudioBus and IAA integration (and Link!) and there's really not too much to complain about in terms of getting sounds out of Gadget.

As for getting sounds into Gadget, that's improved with the sampler IAP's, but it still lacks audio tracks and apparently will for the foreseeable future. But they've improved all the other exporting options to the point where you could easily do everything but recording audio tracks in Gadget, and then move the individual tracks over to a DAW.

  • I agree, the fact that we can now carry this power in our pockets is awesome, and the 6S is even more powerfull than the iPad Air 2 (Korg list module as having up to 72 voices on the Air 2, but 112 voices on the 6S).

All in all Gadget 2.0 seems very polished. On top of the new features they've also tightened a few things here and there so everything just feels a bit more solid. The small usability improvements (like being able to copy multiple existing bars in the editor when adding new ones) really makes this release shine.

Oh, and the fact that we now get this on ALL our iOS devices at no extra cost has to be truly appreciated - WELL DONE KORG!!! (I can almost forgive you for not delivering on the promise of audio tracks even though it's been 2 years already  )

  • Not a single person excited about pitch bend ? :))

  • I've done mine to keep Korg busy for a few more months to come with a lengthy list ideas for future updates over at the Korg Forums, remains to be seen what happens. But damn I do miss the transport controls when a Gadget is shown in fullscreen :D

Agreed with all of this. Plus when Kymatica's AUM drops, we will have full joy on the iPhone.

Yes these full screen gadgets(well almost full screen) is what I was most hoping for on my mini2. Now they are here and I'm very happy!

But agree there is still room for the top and bottom bars (track selection on top and transport buttons on bottom). Got to believe these spaces won't be left blank.
Then again it's not the end of the world to double tap back, and it does look nice uncluttered,.....and could be useful for performance?

    What an amazing update though!
even the parameter label moves out of the way of your finger when you adjust over top of it!

Am enjoying the piano-roll and finding it genuinely creative (or supportive of being creative). Don't quite understand what you mean here viz 'copy multiple existing bars in editor'. Probably doing it already without realizing it, but can you be a bit more specific?

@Goozoon - thanks for the info. re: MIDI.

Where is that mentioned by Korg?

  • Did anyone catch the 'Korg x Bandai Namco' teaser they threw in at the end of the video posted earlier? Wonder what that's all about...

When you press and hold on the + button on the top right of the piano-roll editor, you get a small popup, allowing you to select some or all of the existing bars to copy as additional bars.

Say you have a 4-bar pattern and you want to add two more bars that are identical to bar 1 and 3 - now you can do that with just a few taps. Much faster than the old method of adding empty bars and the copy/pasting one bar at a time via the function button copy feature.

Another example: If you have an 8-bar pattern that you want to make a 16 bar pattern repeating the first 8 bars 2 times, you just click and hold, then select all 8 bars and click copy - done!

  • @Peter321 I really appreciate the effort/explanation. Terrific stuff.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear You're welcome, I think it's a small but very powerfull feature. Especially working with pattern based music like in Gadget.

You already had a function like this before on the previous version. You hit the function button and then click "copy" and it shows you the bars and you just click the bar to duplicate and then click its destination. It is still in this version. I was doing it the select and copy way at first until I found the copy function.

  • Is the cloud thing also working with ios 9.1 (my ipad is 9.1 but my phone on the latest iOS) or in other words:how do i make iM1/Darwin showing up on my iphone?I've read the remote install instructions (for module)but that doesn't help...or is it because i still don't have iCloud drive enabled (on both devices)?

    Great update!!

  • So with Gadget, like Nanostudio. No audio tracks, means exactly what for me? Like I can't start a project in Gadget and easily get it into Auria or a different DAW?

It's dead easy to export Audio out of Gadget: just export the stems to Dropbox and you can then import them into Auria all in one go.

The big problem with Gadget's lack of audio tracks is that it makes it really difficult to work with existing audio, for example if you want to add a Gadget synth to an existing song, there's no convenient way to do that.

  • @Crabman The instructions for Remote Install says that both devices need to have the latest iOS installed.

Connect Gadget via Audiobus to Cubasis or whatever daw and record it. Now with link it's even easier to sync playback and record ;)

  • @richardyot and @alecsbuga

Thanks for the info! Appreciate it.

yes,but i have the latest iOS on both devices.Just not the latest 9.x
I wonder if this really makes a big difference?

  • It could be that Korg (Like Apple) requires iCloud Drive to be active on the System-Level (ie. turned in in the preferences). I'm not putting Gadget on my iPhone 5...

  • I just watched this video from a year ago I'm getting Gadget tonight. never checked it out before this latest update. Looks very cool.
