I got a reply from their support, and it was about as useful as their app, not very haha, they even said, just give us a bad review hahaha
If it was as rantish as your comments here I'm not surprised.
ModStep is the Buchla of Sequencers. Quirky, annoying and sometimes unreliable. But capable of doing amazing things if you just go with it.
Quirky annoying and unreliable, that is supposed to be a compliment ?
That sounds like something you should run away from.
It is buggy as all hell on top too.
Lot of whining and complaining going on here. Take the time to explore and master your tools, guys. I've been using Modstep personally day in day out for about 6 months and although I've had a few issues in the past, I've liaised with the devs, put the time in to understand the app and its strengths/limitations and there's not much I'm left wanting. They've really put together a killer app.
I've always been able to use Modstep at a professional level as a controller and since the last update I've not had a single stability issue, even when hosting its own audio sources.
There are a few more features and refinements I'd like to see yet but it's damn good and with it's devoted and passionate de team it continues to grow. No app gets me more excited about updates than Modstep!
I suggest trying a more rational and sane conventionally designed sequencer with an intuitive UI. For example, Different Drummer.
Most grownups I know are more polite. Actually, most teenagers as well.
Thanks! That one just completely made my day!
Seriously? That's your question.
Screw waiting for an update. I wan't to see the next panel of that comic.
Spirited debate Here
I share some of the frustration others have mentioned. It hasn't happened with Modsteps, but with dev's 2 other apps, I've experienced the app not working followed by radio silence thing. Not good. End of PSA
I dont know i agree with@OscarSouth been using modstep daily no problems at all and its not that Complicated either i dont get why people keep saying that
Never run into a bug with 1.1 version... only thing I miss is reverse a midi clip...
anyone else having the problem of custom presets of au instruments and effects not showing in modstep?
Nice to see this thread come back to life
Here are my humble 5 cents:
Also, try importing a midi track, which, if correctly formatted, i.e. standard-compliant, holds channel information for each note, and assign the target a different channel. Doesn't Modestep seem to filter/override the original channel information in some cases (notes) but not all? Not sure. Not usable. Not happy.
All in all, 1.1 has improved things a lot - as a sequencer for external hardware, I find it very solid. There are still some annoyances, however - the complete separation of the melody/drum tracks is, I think, poorly justified. Why not at least have way to allow note sharing between the two? Furthermore, I do share some of the aforementioned frustration regarding MIDI import, which mainly relates to the track separation. Why in the world would you prevent users from importing a drum track? Or am I missing something and need to take more time to "master this tool"?
Fix these things and you've a decent professional sequencer. Add CC-trigger events, and I'll rip your arms off.
I mainly work inside Modstep itself so can't comment on import issues. Agreed that more fine control of CC modulation would be useful (triggers as you said and a little more precision on the CC automation box, so that exact values are possible.
@Hansson I agree re. usability, it's a very logical program that does a very complex task (you won't find any desktop DAW that's remotely as simple as Modstep). If people want to open an app and effortlessly make music without any thought whatsoever, I'd recommend Figure.
I am going to have to assume that this is a compatibility issue with my ipad (Air2 128gb 10.1.1)
I have literally no idea at all how anybody could say that this software is usable.
Very very simple test
Create a new clip, internal drum sampler, write a pattern.
Create a second clip, internal drum sampler, write a pattern.
Play them both together.
The timing is the worst i have ever heard on any piece of software, it is no where near synced.
You can create the exact same test in any desktop DAW and they all sound pretty much exactly the same, Modstep is all over the place (And no it is nothing to do with swing, its off)
I see people keep saying that it is a great sequencer for external hardware, so is that where the confusion is, it is just utter crap with internal instruments ?
EDIT*
In fact, just tested it with the demo mss that comes with Modstep, and you can hear the 808 and 909 out of sync, how is nobody else hearing this ?
Is bad timing acceptable in IOS land ?
Just no, simple as that, no, bad timing is unacceptable, allied to the fact that the software is full of UX flaws and bugs, this app is unusable (even if it is a compatibility with 10.1.1 or air2 issue), and if you disagree, you seriously need to go and use some real hard/software !!!
I only sequence melodic instruments, control other sequencers via MIDI (ie. Patterning, SECTOR) and send CC automations to effects apps from Modstep, so it's possible I could have missed poor rhythmic sync. Doubt it though.
What ipad are you using, because it is very bad here, i may have to record some audio comparisons up, it is horrific compared to a real DAW.
Please do some recordimgs, ecause i have no timing issues at all over here, running internal drums with AU's and IAa all together no problems.
You have clip qauntize turned on right ? I have set to one bar. Never had any timing issues
OK, bit more testing, seems like it is an issue with 24/96 samples, will have to convert a bunch of samples and test more.
Will do some recordings when i have narrowed it down more.
not the greatest track but its all modstep and a bunch of ruismakers and ruismaker fm and phasemaker and a phonem and synthmaster, jussi. all modstep, one take recording... i cant hear any timing issues
https://soundcloud.com/hansson0728/bon-jussi-at-au-only-jam
Sounds like you are sailing in rare territory.
I'm using an Air2 16GB, latest OS (presumably same as you)
OK, it is definitely a 24/96 issue, the timing is still not as tight as a desktop, but it is much much tighter with 16/44, I guess this is an internal sampler bug with 24/96 then.
I assume nobody is using the internal sampler anyway because it has no panning ?
You can't pan hits, and the Modstep mixer itself has no pan, so i guess using internal instruments is a no go anyway, or is there a basic panning AU i have missed ?
using an Air2 64gb here. (latest OS.)
I mainly use modstep primarily as a midi sequencer ONLY.
Use AUM to host all my IAA apps and AU's. And for my purposes
Modstep is glorious.
p.s:- ZMors EQ is an AU that lets you pan.
I think i need to try that AUM, does that get around the whole "Loading modstep 8 times" because it is struggling to load the IAAs ?
AUs have been pretty well handled on loading to be honest.
This is pretty close to my usage as well. I also use it to sequence Gadget via MIDI sometimes when I'm feeling constrained by its clip launchiing and organizing limitations. Though Modstep is much more stable hosting IAA and AU now, it's been problematic in the past. I've never been interested in its internal instruments. So as a pure MIDI sequencer, I like it a lot as a composition and arranging tool.
Auria Pro and Cubasis are more traditional and MIDI sequencing environments. They're both really good. I just find I have less hinderance to creativity using Modstep while composing.
What are you using as a drum sampler wim ?
Ideally i would like to remove the 19" rack from my live set up entirely, but i haven't seen a drum sampler AUv3.
Hoping for Ruismaker sample hahaha, been using BramBos software all the way back to Hammerhead and Taureg, in fact it is down to him releasing on IOS that i am investigating Ipads for live work.
Yup, this is where it came together for me too.
indevice midi seq for me, 8 audio outs tracking into Cubasis or Auria. A bit like the 2 views of Ableton, Bitwig
I like the onboard additive synth for quick and dirty voices, the sound fits my ear and dresses up nicely with the myriad available AU and IAA fx
What device you using?
