I'm kind of at a loss now. Been trying maybe 1 hour at time for the last few evenings (only using 'Random dice' presets, but just can't seem to find anything with the right tone. 'Triggering with midi' - I take it this is more of a general suggestion? because surely changing the note via midi is just that, -it won't affect any characteristics of the actually 'tone' as such.
I just find a lot of the random (and even the preloaded presets) to lack the clarity I need to recreate a tone found in 'calif. love' or say 'I can make you dance' (by Zapp).
@SkillipEvolver There is a major effect of "Triggering with MIDI" - the pitch stays constant during the course of a note. And tat's really important for the effect you're after. You can do this with the the vocal pitch follower too, but then you should set "Autotune" to 100% and set Scale to - for example - Diatonic Major.
Another important difference between "Follow Voice pitch" and "Follow MIDI Pitch": the synth sounds are either triggered by your voice ( to retrigger you have to insert gaps in your utterances ) or by the MIDI keyboard.
But i agree that a few simpler/clearer presets are missing in VoxSyn, we will add some in the next version coming soon...
@VirSyn thank you for helping me understand it a bit better. -following your tip (setting autotune to 100%, I find the result holding my pitch much better than before). As a fun exercise, its really challenging me to get my singing notes as perfect as possible!
But I see now! that playing with midi gives you much more control.
As im trying to recreate the Zapp sound, the closest I've come to what im after is a modified version of the "Rawbass 1" preset.
Here, it set to 55% autotune. The beats were are the bogstandard hiphop machine in GarageBand, and the bass I did in iFretlessBass:
Through my playing around with it, Im finding it tricky to sing get a vibrato effect. - I am uttering the vibrato with my voice, but I am guessing the autoune is playing it down a lot. Again, all guesswork, I'm a newb to this.
I tried using pitchbend hardware wheel on my keyboard to get the effect but I think it only pedals up by 1semitone which isnt enough for the ideal vibrato effect. -I don't think the amount of bend my hardware button does can be configured in VoxSyn.
Thank you for including the phaser and reverb effects especially,, it definitely improves the sound !
If anyone gets a chance, feel free to check out what I did (in 15mins!) word of warning please excuse the timing issues (very amateur keyboard player here!):
Vocoder tryout
@Virsyn I think I might already know the answer to this, but I'm thinking of trying the app in alive setting (now I'm a bit better used to it).
I plan to use it with MIDI, about practicality of live setup; its a bit awkward to use the iPad as a mic in a live setting! So I was considering a phone, I don't own an iPhone, my friend does (drummer in same group), is it possible to use the already purchased app on his iPhone or would we have to buy it again?
-- Other thoughts, I saw a guy literally sellotape a tube to his iPhone (on YouTube) to use as a Talkbox! Maybe I could get a 2ft tube, and with the iPad sitting on the keyboard stand, do it that way!?
Another question : let's say in a live situation you wanted to use a mic to utter your vocals, and you already have your keyboard connected to the iPad via iRigMidi (lightning). How would you do that if the lightning port on the iPad is already in use? Is there a gadget to accommodate this setup? I looked at 'iRig Pro' but afaics it's not what I need.
@VirSyn I was wondering the same thing. With an irig pro connected with a mic and an external midi controller are you able to sing into the mic and controll VoxSyn with an external midi controller at the same time? Please help!
@andysangria Me too Andy. Ive had a look on YouTube for examples of this setup but found very little. If anyone would know it must be VirSyn! :-D
I have a question, I'll keep it brief because my posts are usually too long probably.
--------- VoxSyn won't allow me to use Vibrato (hardware wheel) of my keyboard within the app. --* Im trying to achieve vibrato*.
Is there a way to go through a 3rdparty app? (one which DOES allow modulation hardware wheel) so I can get the effect?
The hex scale note layout is dope and the tracking is ace. Sweet and weird vocoder for sure!
Nice update dropped with wet/dry mix! thank you @VirSyn
Sorry - many factory presets got lost with the update, another update bringing them back is already on the way...
Thanks for keeping us in the loop (as it were).
I wouldn't mind if all the factory presets were lost, and replaced with just ten actually usable presets
Ooh! Bitter purchase!?
I used to think that, but, as I begun to find out last night... If you start tweaking the eq of a given preset you can reveal quite about the underlying 'patch'/timbre
---still, I am still trying to work my way to what I would call a 'sweet' sound. I do find quite a lot of the presets to be either a bit damp sounding, .. Just lacking a crispness. But I have also found that if you tweak the amount of 'original' in the mix (ie alongside/behind the'effect') that can sound a bit nicer.
Not bitter, but I do find most of he presets to be pretty much unusable on vocals.
He's a very hard man....
Update is now available - presets are back again. Hope that especially the first few in "Leads" will give you some more traditional things...
That's good of you to do that, thanks VirSyn. I'm enjoying these first few a lot. Looking forward to trying out some more soon. Just not enough time in the day :-( :-/
Thanks for the effort and the note.
So much fun to use!!!
Here is some nonsense I did with the first 10 presets. I basically find this really liberating (as someone who's best asset musically is his voice)- my keyboarding sucks, but always workin on it!
Just want to say how great this is as an FX app, can't wait until all the Virsyn apps go AU including this gem. Useful for feeding all sorts of sounds through not just vocals. finding it useful for adding different ryhthmic pitches to drums etc
@VirSyn is there any way I can use my hardware modulation wheel of my midi keyboard to get a tremelo effect in VoxSyn?
This is probably a no but anybody know of a way to use the interface of an alternative app to control VoxSyn?
I will endeavour to learn VoxSyn's hex UI but I feel so comfortable with iFretlessBass. Because it pretty much replicates a bass guitar layout (and I play bass). It would be so cool to be able to use that with VoxSyn. Is there any way, any how? Thanks! Cheers for reading.
Just bought the app, it seems good!
But I have problem with preset "roboter": I use midi keyboard and an audio interface with mic, but the sound often stops, if the voice is regular, I press the keys and sometimes they not sounds, or just sound a millisecondand then stop, also if I keep pressing down the key.
Like it was a midi problem, or a trigger problem, but it happen only with this preset, all the other are right with zero problem. It happen only to me? I'd like to use this preset because I need a very robotic voice.
Sorry for my English..
I'm so glad you mentioned this. I have the same issue. I suspect that it has something to do with parameters of the patch that we're unable to edit. That doesn't it it any less frustrating though...
I forgot to say that it happens only with keyboard midi, no with its own interface, its grid
Maybe because it is a mono patch? The others are poli. Also with "manga" patch which is mono it happens
@hrestov yes, this is the reason - have to look deeper why this happens this way. In the meantime open this link on your iPad/iPhone to import a poly version of Roboter into VoxSyn:
http://www.virsyn.de/mobile/RoboterPoly.fxp
Have fun!
Thanks for posting that link. I'm having trouble importing the file into VoxSyn - when I open the link in either Chrome or Safari it doesn't list VoxSyn in the "Open In..." pop-up whether I have VoxSyn open or not. Is there a way to open the link directly with VoxSyn? What am I missing?
Isn't there also the option "More..." ? This is what i see here. And after tapping "More" i get "Import into VoxSyn" after scrolling a bit.
Hmmm - that doesn't show up for me. I've tried a number of different ways (import it into OneDrive and try "Open in another app...", open in Safari and in Chrome) but VoxSyn doesn't show in my list. Weird.
Well - I downloaded the file anyway and I'll try a reboot and see if that does the trick. Any other ideas? I looked in the settings and there didn't seem to be anything obvious that would help...
