@AndyPlankton yeah, was more wishing out loud. I have an iCM4A+ which will do the hosting. In a world where the number of USB-MIDI only controllers as well as stand-alone hardware soundmakers are both growing, I'd really like to see the number of things that host go up as well. Maybe it's just me but one of the most interesting aspects of the soon to be released MPC is that it acts as a host.

I'm of the same mind, really like that about roland

Not really kept up to date on the mpc, might have to take a look, anything that can dual function is worth that at least. Is it able to be mobile, i.e. Run on batteries or bus power?

Akai hasn't officially released any details. Not intentionally anyway. From what others have scooped, looks like it has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

In his latest video, synthesist Cuckoo takes a look at creating and editing custom synth patches for the Novation Circuit.

@syrupcore That, Professor, is a piece of work.

This is now officially on my radar, thanks Mr Core :)

  • Thanks everyone for this thread.

I have caught up with it over the last two days.

And needless to say have today pressed buy on a used but good condition Circuit on eBay.

Should arrive before Chrimble. Which I'm now looking forward to.

Similar thoughts to Johnny (can't I already do all this on an iPad?). But we'll see. I do like tactile grid based sequencing.

And @Tarekith 's 20 min ambient techno set pushed me over the edge. It sounds amazing!

    Questions:

    1. What does everyone mean by 'linked drums' - and why is this so bad?

    2. Is sample flipping easy or very fiddly?

    3. Presumably one could play in arps to a saved pattern from something like StepPoly arp? (Im quite into my complex arps at the moment).

    4. Are there any user generated synth patch banks out there? Or any third party ones for sale (That would be cool.)

    5. It seems like the synth engine is pretty powerful once you use the computer to get in and edit. Any major limitations?

    6. Why is the half the cc implementation NPRGs rather than normal midi CCs (and what are NPRGs, can midi designer or TB midi stuff send them? What about my Berhinger BCR?)

    Any answers appreciated.

Pretty sure I recall @Tarekith posting some as well. Maybe it was a sample pack though.

Why is the half the cc implementation NPRGs rather than normal midi CCs (and what are NPRGs, can midi designer or TB midi stuff send them? What about my Berhinger BCR?)

There are only 127 CCs and the synth has more than 127 controls.

Bought a Circuit brand new off Amazon a few weeks back. Fell in love Immediately. Such a cool and immediate unit. Much more fun than my Volca Keys that I wanted to like but didn't connect with. For twice the price I got 10 times the fun.

Unfortunately it developed a glitch on one of the pads but Novation have been great. They took it in last week by arranging a UPS collection, (being in the UK probably helped). Just got word tonight that they're shipping me out a brand new unit.

Looking forward to being reunited with it. I missed it greatly.

Cuckoo's vids are awesome. He has a cool Circuit pack available by being a patron.

@JohnnyGoodyear I recommend rechargeable batteries. They'll last about 4-5 hours and you'll definitely find yourself (I mean your son, cough) putting those hours in. :)

  • Oh wow. @SpookyZoo have you made an X-Station template for the synth controls? :)

  • What trigger modes are available for samples ?
    Example
    One shots
    Loops
    Group/choking
Trigger at start of next bar and so on

Get the Volca and Circuit working together. I'm getting plenty of mileage out of my new live setup:)

Brilliant. Those vids were another reason I hit buy :).

I also have a Volca Keys I'm gonna pair it with.

  • Cool stuff!

However the Volca got returned and helped fund the Circuit.

Honestly? It's more likely a 2nd Circuit rather than a Volca reprieve in future. :)

Two circuits would be nice. I'm in the market for a Modal craft synth. Hopefully Father Christmas will oblige :)

@syrupcore Thanks again for the Cuckoo nudge. I find this both inspiring and intimidating all at once.

    Can't wait.

(Oh, and the bastard forced me to shove an Arturia Keystep into my stocking, hopefully no one will notice in all the chrimble chaos...).

    Questions:

    1. What does everyone mean by 'linked drums' - and why is this so bad?

there are 4 drum tracks, but there not completely independent, they are in pairs, this means that the patterns are joined in the sequencer (1 pattern with 2 lanes), but you can still control the volume and mute and FX individually, I haven't found it limiting.

    1. Is sample flipping easy or very fiddly?

    >
Simple if you record with flip in the first place, when editing recorded flips it can be a little fiddly at first...the Duplicate button becomes your friend here though :)

    1. Presumably one could play in arps to a saved pattern from something like StepPoly arp? (Im quite into my complex arps at the moment).

Yes, you can record midi in, or send midi elsewhere...if you are MIDI clock syned it works brilliantly...you will particluarly like doing this with Gadget ;)

    1. Are there any user generated synth patch banks out there? Or any third party ones for sale (That would be cool.)

    Yes there are.

Not really found any, it has planty of options and tweakability

    1. Why is the half the cc implementation NPRGs rather than normal midi CCs (and what are NPRGs, can midi designer or TB midi stuff send them? What about my Berhinger BCR?)

Yes MIDI COntroller apps can, I have a full Lemur template for the full synth engine, mod matrix and macro assignments. I put it in the Lemur user library. I have also done quite a bit with my Novation Remote 25 which can also do NRPN, NRPN is basically a special CC (98 and 99 I think ?) where in simplified terms you send a CC98 with the Parameter Number and then send CC 99 with the Parameter value.

    Any answers appreciated.

I think you will instantly fall in love with Circuit when you use it as a controller and sequencer for Gadget, The Circuit sequencer is really quick for note entry, and then once tweaked you can record it into Gadget.
You can also use the pads in scale mode to play gadget's live, or use the rotaries to map to Gadget controls.

Don't forget though to also take the Circuit on its own with a pair of headphones and see where you end up :)

Very generous responses. TBH I am thinking of going to a desert island for a ten days with just this and some headphones to learn (or I guess really just get muscle memory familiar with) the thing. I don't have anything else to connect it to beyond the Big Boy and a laptop, but have you bought/required any other wires, adapters. specially textured latex bodysuits etc, that didn't come in the box?

Things you will need to use with the iPad that are not supplied but you probably have already

    CCK
    USB HUB
    USB Audio Interface
2 x 1/4" jack to whatever input your audio interface has

The setup is, Circuit connected via USB (cable supplied) to USB HUB
Audio interface connected to same USB Hub
Circuit connect to Audio interface using your own Audio cable (2 x 1/4" jack output from circuit for L/Mono and Right)
Hub connected to iPad via CCK.

If you want to run circuit sounds alongside Gadget then you need something that will allow you to play the audio input...I use AUM
So I have the Line in on one channel and Gadget on another. Send these internally in AUM to a bus track, and you can record that bus track for capturing live performances.
By doing it this way i avoid needing a hardware mixer. If you DO have a mixer you can use that instead of the audio input and AUM.

BTW, The muscle memory thing is important, it can take a little while to get used to how circuit works and what all the shortcuts are, but once you know them you don't even think about it, you just do it. :)

  • Maybe I will release the editor earlier (maybe next weekend) ,than waiting to add all the features I want.
Still it will be usable: Editing the synth parameters !

I'm going to have to start paying you (in cake?).

Much as I will be tempted to hook it up right away to the Big Boy I sense that this will lead (initially) to an hour or two of "It's not working! It's broken!". Like any first date, I'd like to get off (ha!) on the right foot etc. so plan on just headphones and the inevitable initial confusion :)

While I do have a hub and a huge box of endlessly tanged old cables I do NOT have an audio interface (or mixer for that matter). I do have an Arturia Keystep coming which I am -perhaps totally wrongly- thinking will play that part to some degree....all good. Mister Cuckoo's little jam above made me happy and if I can replicate that kind of setup AFTER having learned most of the logic of the box itself all will be well.

Unfortunately the Keystep will not help with mixing the audio...you will still need something to do that unless you are happy with one set of speakers for the iPad and another for the circuit....as you will no doubt at some point want to record your Circuit audio into Auria then an interface is probably the best thing to get, don't worry though, the UCA202 is dirt cheap and works pretty well, there are of course more expensive alternatives around too. Probably best to wait until you are ready and then see what budget you have at that time and then choose the best fit for you ;)

EDIT: Just thought, you could try and use the input jack on the iPad itself...not tried this, but if you do this, you will have audio out ? Has anyone else used external gear in this way with the iPad ??

Be sure and let me know how that Keystep holds up once your used to it, I have a secret yearning for one of these too :)
