Sensual Sax by Embertone - The Most Realistic iOS Virtual Instrument Yet?

edited January 2017 in General App Discussion

Embertone makes some of the most highly regarded virtual instruments in the business. They are particularly known for their Friedlander Violin and Blakus Cello. http://www.embertone.com/instruments/instruments.html

Everybody who has responded to this string has loved the sound. There are good reasons for that. As the video makes clear, it has true legato. That means if you play C and play a D you will hear a sampled recording of a saxophone playing C to D.
In addition to Legato it has a Sustain articulation (which allows chords), and Staccato (short notes)
I also don't know of any iOS instruments that offer switchable articulations. You can separate articulations for instrument sounds in SampleTank, but they are different patchdes.
IMHO this app takes iOS music making to a new level of realism and even, musicality.

MIDI in and out, IAA, AUv3, and Audiobus. It is also universal.
Some people have experienced some issues with AU. It apparently works in AUM and Garageband and Cubasis, but not in Auria Pro. Alex from @embertone is aware and is working on it.

While everybody likes the sound, not everybody likes the sexually suggestive user interface, involving a "sex knob" which turns up the reverb and adds grittiness. For some, the UI is not suitable for church, for one person, it is offensive. For me, it is kind of dumb. One person thought it played into the bad cliches about the saxophone.
Alex from @embertone has agreed to offer the option to change some of the interface in settings. So if you like it, you can have it, and if you don't, you don't have to.

  • Very cool indeed!

WOW! this brought a huge smile on my face, actually more than one. the sound is awesome, the graphics, the concept behind it, the sex knob ... really classy video, and great post also @Reid introducing this app

  • This is a huge deal. First, having a quality legato is one of the essential aspects to any professional virtual instrument, whether string, brass, woodwind or vocal. Without true legato they don't sound real. And people praise the libraries that have the best sounding true legatos. This must involve recording the intervals between notes, and not just recording slow playing notes.

The iSymphonic app has a "Legato Orchestra Strings ," sound, but they don't advertise whether it is a true legato.
    Maybe it is.

I think it's fair to say that FingerFiddle has true legato, because it's modelled. And that's why we like it so much.

This is kind of like having the first sampled app with velocity sensitivity. It makes that much of a difference.

And how many instruments do you know of that let you switch articulations?

Finally, most of the leading virtual instrument companies don't make apps. There is nothing from Spitfire Audio. If some of these companies would take the instruments they've already created and port them to us, it will really improve the quality and fun of what we do.

I hope this is a success so that Embertone will bring out more of their stuff. I do know of at least one other thing that is coming from another company.

For those of you who work with computer DAWS, go over to their site and get some of their free stuff. You'll see how amazing it is.

I just bought it and had a quick play. It sounds wonderfull, and the way they handle legato makes this feel like an instrument more than any other sax I've tried on iOS. I like the concept with the sex button. And the whole look and feel is fun.

This sounds amazing. I listened to the Friedlander violin and the Blakus cello and I have to have these. Please make

  • Nice, and AU too!

Wow! That really does sound great! Too bad I have no use for a sax.
Maybe I will get it anyway and do some Thunderdome covers.

  • @Arpseechord
There's a nice LE free version of the Friedlander in their Freebie ARCANE
    http://www.embertone.com/instruments/arcane.php

which also includes an alto female vocal legato, an "ethereal dulcimer," and some fun weird stuff. This works in the Kontakt Player, which means that Embertone PAID Native Instruments for the right to give it away for free.

Other free, but full Kontakt instruments include a Harmonette, Jug Drum, Intimate Strings LITE, Atmoraffe (squeezy toy), and of course Scorecast Kitchen.

I love Embertone. During a recent sale I bought their Tomato Paste Kalimba, which is of course a Kalimba on a tomato paste can. It has a great arpeggiator. Highly recommended.

  • Awesome! Had a play with ChordUp, couldn't stop smiling.

  • Does this instrument work with a midi controller? I have been looking for a good iOS sax for some cover songs and would like to be able to have some legato articulation through a controller. It does sound amazing! Excellent work Embertone!

  • I'm on the sexy saxophone train also now!

Sounds really great, and, as everybody can hear, the legato mode with the awesome transitions between note is best ever on iOS (as I can recall)...

    Recommended!

  • It's now in iTunes Store now for a reasonable 4.99 euros. ;)

    Thanks for the link

    Is that true?
I can't find Sensual Sax among the other AUs in Auria Pro?

  • OMG Yes! I love this instrument on pc but really dislike having to use Kontakt. This is purfect!

  • This makes me think of Jon and Vangelis "And When The Night Comes" fantastic song with sax

Ahhh! I see this as an AU in AUM though!

Perhaps to reboot my iPad Pro for Auria Pro to see it?

Works great with my kboard as well as other midi controller apps

  • Despite my inherent sexiness, I don't have need of a saxophone too often. Great job though, and good luck to them. I can finally see the musical saw virtual instrument of my dreams on the horizon.

  • Very cool - does the SEX knob allow external control (such as MIDI learn?) Would love to use this as a sound module for my keyboard live, but my iPad is usually placed out of reach by my hands.

Would be cool to run that knob with a External control pedal, like a Wah Wah

  • EDIT - video just said mod wheel controls the Sex Knob - Very cool -

Wow I am so tempted to buy this just to annoy the sax players in my Ska/Reggae band -
I mean, what better motivation could one ask for ? :)

I agree on all counts, particularly the singing saw.

But...am I the only one who finds the whole "sex" knob (cue Beavis— "he said 'knob'") just embarrassing? Like...you guys know this will NEVER get you laid, right?

  • I do agree with @ExAsperis99. I don't mind that it's called the SEX knob, but an option to eliminate the word from the knob would be preferable for me. I mean I was considering using this sax for some songs at church. Don't think I would ever use it there at all with the word SEX completely visible in the knob front and center.

  • Stick a smiley face on the screen where the knob is then....... :D

I applaud the company for being politically incorrect and naming it the "Sex" knob. I was waiting for the guy to play "Careless Whisper" by George Michael in the Video. It just fits perfectly and it's funny!

And the App Store description :D Is this the first music app with an age restriction?

I think it's very sad that sexual repression mostly comes from religion.

1 thing: Does it support polyphonic aftertouch for the Vibrato?

Strange. I don't see it in Auria Pro under AU but it is definitely there in Cubasis 2.

    Har har.
It's not "politically incorrect." It's totally juvenile. It's just cheesy.

Instant buy. Just what I wanted for the current project! As for the Sex Knob, whey-hey let the good times roll.
