  • Updated my Mini2 and iPhone and everything so far seems pretty good. It wasn’t nearly as scary as the build up made it seem

How do you stop the flippin’ Apple Music icon from continuously popping up on your dock?

I disabled 'recent' apps on all my devices and added only the ones I frequency switch between. Its bloody class!! Instant switching and BONUS : No more splash screens when app switching!!

I'm curious about apps that are in our world. I know that because of the "sandbox" architecture Apple favors, in the past files have been locked down, but say if an app like Auria wanted to add support for the Files app could that work? Or is this more for storage related apps/services?

Yes, that's the big potential advantage of Files over apps like Documents or FileBrowser: once apps like Auria or Cubasis add support, we will be able to peer into the app file structure and move things in and out from any other accessible source. The functionality needs to be added by the developers on an app by app basis, but I imagine there will be a slow adoption over time.

For those not fussed with true tone or night mode, which get disabled if you do this, the Dark Mode is quite dramatic. Here’s how to turn it on.

WARNING. This mode affects ALL apps.

Thanks. I did that but it still pops up. So far, it seems to be when I have headphones in and visit the App Store. Minor annoyance.

Animations feel much slower/less nimble than iOS10.

    Is that on the iPad?

I updated my SE and it’s flying - much faster UI

Where is this Obi Wan? Settings somewhere?

SE. Animations are good and some are improved but they don’t react as fast when you interrupt it ‘mid flow’.

  • So I took the plunge and updated my iPad Air 2 this morning after all the good feedback here, so here is the result

  • I updated Pages, and I can't get it to work now - when I open the app it goes straight to the new file browser, and since there's no files there it's stuck.

  • Hmmm...this new file browser is a bit shit on the iPhone. It's created a folder called 'Pixelmator' by default, and to create a Pages document I have to go inside that folder, and add files that way. Can't rename the folder, or delete it, and Pages didn't create it's own...

I had Pages installed and updated before IOS 11. Yet there is no Pages folder in Files. Launching Pages, it shows the three files I have in there. Perhaps there is a setting to make it appear, but if so I haven’t found it yet.

  • how are the 2017 pro users fairing. still having issues?

  • So how do we get side by side apps?

  • Major lag in AB3 (2FPS, if I’m being generous!) when loading my regular patch, followed by an inevitable crash. Going to try and rebuild it from blank.

Me too. I don't understand why I can't create a new folder, or why one hasn't been created for Pages. Or why it's saving pages documents in a Pixelmator folder. I'm 50% thinking there's something I should be doing that I don't know about, and 50% thinking this is a bunch of wank.

FWIW, I’d guess something has got screwed up on your iPad. I just created a new document in Pages, and it did not show up in Pixelmator within Files.

Updated everything apart from the Air1 that will never be updated. Mostly works. Small as it is, love the new dock. Generally happy in an Eeyore way that nothing (significant to me) is too banjaxed. Inevitable hurdle largely cleared. Moving on etc.

    LOL  @JohnnyGoodyear
The Eeyore reference made me guffaw. Sometimes if me & the missus are having a good natured spat (usually over something dumb, like every married couple...) I'll slip into what she'll call the "Eeyore", where I get all doleful and "Yes dear... whatever you say...me sorry". She'll pipe up "Don't you Eeyore me!"

Well apparently not every app supports side by side, but the ones that do, like safari and messages, you flick down from the top of the app thats on the right, on that little line at the top, which used to show all the other apps that support side by side. I kind of like the old way better tbo

  • While most here seems to be positive, I'll just wait with going 11. Seems there are a few annoyances and bugs to be worked out.

So....took the plunge and updated my Air2, and so far so good, aside from the apps just just wont run because they arent 64bit, like Nanostudio and others, everything seems to be working perfectly. I have a TON of apps and ran thru a lot, not extensively but just to see what running and working without hiccups and no issues yet. Went thru all the DAWs I have on my Ipad, Cubasis, Garageband, Auria and Auria Pro, Mutitrack DAw, BeatMaker 3, BeatMaker2, ModStep, MusicStudio,Caustic, FL STudio, Genome MIDI.... everything except NanoStudio feel pretty solid so far. Rean thru some guitar sims, Amplitube,Bias fx, Bias Amp, Jamup Pro, Tonestack, Ampkit.. all solid, a bunch of synths, some graphic apps, video ( Lumafusion ).... Long story short, all good so far. I read where Drump Perfect Pro doesnt work, I dont have the pro to check it out, but Drum Perfect ( non pro ) works fine so Im sure thatll get sorted out.

IOS11 overall... Im liking it, I love being able to put my go to's in the doc now that we can add more than 6 apps in the dock. A few things need to get sorted out with the new file system, Audioshare is listed but doesnt open in it, but Audioshare itself till works. So normally I dont rush into new IOS updates, especially a big one like this, but I took a chance and I think Ill be ok. I do have and Ipad 2 so I can still run 32 bits apps on that if I really want to.

Now heres the one thing that Im a little disappointed with so far , and it might be my fault, I heard we'd be able to send midi and audio thru the lightning cable to the MacBook Pro and that the IPad work work pretty much like a usb class compliant device, and I thought I would see my Ipad inside Logic Pro and send midi to it, its not happening for me, but Im still running 10.9.5 on my Mac cuz I dont want to upgrade. If anyone has the midi and audio thru lightning cable going Id love to hear how they got that going. Anyway besides that Im good, though I think Ill have to get used to the new app store, I find it was easier to get around before the new one launched, we'll see.

I've been able to send both midi and audio to ableton--works great with both iphone se and 2017 ipad. Running osx el capitan 10.11.6. You'll need to go to audio/midi set up on the mac, choose "show ios device browser" in the window tab and enable your ipad/iphone. Then they should show up as audio/midi sources in your daw.

Is this a max thing only? Though I was getting it to work on my Win 10 machine with Modstep... but it seems that Modstep has Studiomux sending midi...

Just tried that with the apps you mention, and nothing doing. But unless lots of apps support the feature, it will quickly become another rotten Apple.

This is on my phone. I’ve never used Pages on it, updated it earlier and just wanted to have a look. When I booted it it went to the new files section, and said no documents were available. I couldn’t do anything else except quit, or open the Pixelmator folder. When in there I could create a new Pages doc, but it’d be saved in this Pixelmator folder.

Brilliant. That's where Files and drag & drop can change the entire landscape. It seems in the new world of 2017 and beyond iOS devs will have to have AUv3 compatibility and this split screen/share ability to be seen as a pro Music Production app.

Once file management/import & export is this easy and quality AU's continue to accumulate anything else would be a step backwards.

Try it again, heres a screen shot of it working

  • Ok, deleted Pages and Pixelmator, re-installed Pages. When I opened Pages it offered the new document/template option, but when I picked one it threw up an error. Closed and reopened, and now it just goes straight to the Files section where it does nothing - no option to create a new document and none to open.

So iOS 11 has destroyed Pages on my phone. I won’t be updating the iPad.

Ok, was looking forward to that on my PC... but iOS 11 has changed (or, is changing) the way I do things on the iPad... Just might be able to do almost everything on the iPad then send it over to the PC...
With this team of great developers for the iPad... it is going to be a Merry Xmas...

    Enjoy..
