Ok, deleted Pages and Pixelmator, re-installed Pages. When I opened Pages it offered the new document/template option, but when I picked one it threw up an error. Closed and reopened, and now it just goes straight to the Files section where it does nothing - no option to create a new document and none to open.

So iOS 11 has destroyed Pages on my phone. I won’t be updating the iPad.

Under 'Settings'(for Pages, Keynote and Numbers) you can change 'Document Storage' from 'iCloud Drive' to 'On My iPad'. This way you'll get the 'folders' for Pages, Keynote and Numbers in the Files.app and in the apps as well.

Thanks Samu, that works now. I had ‘on my iphone’ selected In the files app itself, but seems you have to enable it in Pages as well to be able to use the app at all.

True... If you select 'iCloud Drive' in the side-bar while in Pages you can create a document but you can not directly create a document in 'On my iPad' without enabling it in the settings. This is a BAD move on Apples part to force people to store stuff on iCloud...

Yep, it's even worse on the phone as you have no sidebar, and if you don't know to enable it via the settings you can't use Pages at all.

Typical Apple, smells of iTunes and the like.

True, Apple never admits they do anything 'wrong' but still end up fixing a thing or two 'silently' with updates :)

Same with the 'backup issues' I had with my Air 2.
With both iTunes and iOS 'up to date' it works again but before they were released I was recommended to do factory restores, try other cables and other BS when it in fact was a bug in the software.

I'm pretty sure we'll see another round of 'Pages, Keynote, Numbers' updates for both iOS and macOS when macOS High Sierra ships on the 25th to 'fix a thing or two'...

  • I can confirm that iOS 11 works on iPad Air 1. Not the fastest performance but it works. I don't rant about software but I gotta say that the AppStore is really in a mess. I really don't understand why apple cannot get the app store or iTunes right ever since.
Nevertheless, I love the new dock. Yay

  • I sense an iOS11.1 update coming within the month or so...

In iTunes on the iPhone, the main title (e.g. ‘Apps’) takes up 25% of the screen.

That is not good design and a waste of screen space. So for a company noted for it, they’ve dropped the ball on that one.

As a designer, and one who’s worked for big corporations creating style guidelines to ensure consistency across all platforms, I’m shocked at the sloppiness of this.

    This just shouldn’t happen.

Pages seems to be working fine here on my iPhone in iOS 11, as long as I'm in browse/Locations/iCloud Drive. (Which is where I keep everything, so it works for me). There's a Plus button at the top to add a new file as well, but only when I'm in the iCloud Drive.

*** Oh, good to know about the settings in Pages to change between iCloud and local storage. Since I work on the same files on my iMac and iPad, iCloud storage is a must for me...

So....took the plunge and updated my Air2, and so far so good, aside from the apps just just wont run because they arent 64bit, like Nanostudio and others, everything seems to be working perfectly. I have a TON of apps and ran thru a lot, not extensively but just to see what running and working without hiccups and no issues yet. Went thru all the DAWs I have on my Ipad, Cubasis, Garageband, Auria and Auria Pro, Mutitrack DAw, BeatMaker 3, BeatMaker2, ModStep, MusicStudio,Caustic, FL STudio, Genome MIDI.... everything except NanoStudio feel pretty solid so far. Rean thru some guitar sims, Amplitube,Bias fx, Bias Amp, Jamup Pro, Tonestack, Ampkit.. all solid, a bunch of synths, some graphic apps, video ( Lumafusion ).... Long story short, all good so far. I read where Drump Perfect Pro doesnt work, I dont have the pro to check it out, but Drum Perfect ( non pro ) works fine so Im sure thatll get sorted out.

IOS11 overall... Im liking it, I love being able to put my go to's in the doc now that we can add more than 6 apps in the dock. A few things need to get sorted out with the new file system, Audioshare is listed but doesnt open in it, but Audioshare itself till works. So normally I dont rush into new IOS updates, especially a big one like this, but I took a chance and I think Ill be ok. I do have and Ipad 2 so I can still run 32 bits apps on that if I really want to.

Now heres the one thing that Im a little disappointed with so far , and it might be my fault, I heard we'd be able to send midi and audio thru the lightning cable to the MacBook Pro and that the IPad work work pretty much like a usb class compliant device, and I thought I would see my Ipad inside Logic Pro and send midi to it, its not happening for me, but Im still running 10.9.5 on my Mac cuz I dont want to upgrade. If anyone has the midi and audio thru lightning cable going Id love to hear how they got that going. Anyway besides that Im good, though I think Ill have to get used to the new app store, I find it was easier to get around before the new one launched, we'll see.

I've been able to send both midi and audio to ableton--works great with both iphone se and 2017 ipad. Running osx el capitan 10.11.6. You'll need to go to audio/midi set up on the mac, choose "show ios device browser" in the window tab and enable your ipad/iphone. Then they should show up as audio/midi sources in your daw.

@hightunnels, have you been able to get midi and or audio to go the other way, from Mac to iPad?

Have not--pretty sure you can only do that with Studiomux

You'll have to create a document in Pages first before the folder is visible in Files.app.
(Ie. enable 'on this device' for pages, start pages, and create a document, go to Files.app and it should be there).

That’s what got me - I couldn’t create a document so it was the old chicken/egg scenario. In the end I opened a document from Dropbox, and saved that on the phone. Still couldn’t open it in Pages, but it seemed to kick it into action and I could then activate phone saving and create new documents.

It’s a fudge, basically. Lack of attention to detail again.

On the plus side I’ve just discovered Notes allows drawing and photo import, so I probably won’t use Pages now anyway.

    Overall though I wish I hadn’t updated.

  • This is my first post. I just wanted to thank the membership here. I do a bit of music on iOS. I've gotten wonderful advice from reading this forum. I knew I would be able to get some solid information about iOS 11 by visiting today and I was not mistaken. I haven't decided if I'll update (iPad Air2) yet. Thanks for this discussion.

Once you’ve clicked “enable” on your iOS device in AudioMidi on the Mac as described above then yes Midi comes from the Mac to the iOS no problem. There will be a new Midi out port called iPad you can just choose as a track output in Ableton.

I had great fun today using my iPad as an external synth module :)

However - Audio is one way only... from iOS to Mac, not from Mac to iOS unfortunately. I am really hoping they make it bidirectional.

Once you’ve clicked “enable” on your iOS device in AudioMidi on the Mac as described above then yes Midi comes from the Mac to the iOS no problem. There will be a new Midi out port called iPad you can just choose as a track output in Ableton.

I had great fun today using my iPad as an external synth module :)

However - Audio is one way only... from iOS to Mac, not from Mac to iOS unfortunately. I am really hoping they make it bidirectional.

lol...yeah....kinda thought that was the case but hoped it wasnt. Im definitely not ready to update my Mac OS anytime soon. Maybe Ill look into installing a separate SSD drive or something and install an OS on that. I tried studiomux out a while back but it had some issues that needed to be worked out.

My experience has been ok. Some rough edges... but nothing catastrophic. I've had to reinstall a handful of apps after the update, like Lumafusion, and TiltVideo... I think a couple others too.

Unless you're just dying to nerd out on some of the new interface goodies, I'd say hold off at least the first update. The new stuff isn't that incredible for regular use that you shouldn't wait a little bit for it to get smoothed out a little more first.

You'll have to create a document in Pages first before the folder is visible in Files.app.
(Ie. enable 'on this device' for pages, start pages, and create a document, go to Files.app and it should be there).

Tried that, and still not there. Fed up now, so will have another bash tomorrow. Goodnight.

Definitely some weirdness going on, I created a new Page, and it was saved in my Pixelmator folder. So I decided to see what happens with a new pixelmator file, so I made a new one, then I exported that, and I saw I could send it to my pages folder ( which didnt even exist before )..... go figure....all seems to be fine now. I still dont think the new files system is as useful as I thought it was going to be at the present time, I thought we'd be able to just create folders and things would be a lot more seamless

Good to know about the midi, thanks!

This is my first post.

Welcome, it is indeed a font of knowledge here.

Going on the reports from the trenches I'll be updating tonight, seems solid.

    Samplr still works, right? ;)

Not updating anyfin till I know if my old version of Anytune is gonna work.

Does that mean that you don't have the latest version of Anytune Pro that is minus the one special feature that will not be mentioned here?
