iOS 11 is NOT an improvement

Installed it on Air 2, Mini 4, iPod 6G, iPhone 7. Runs perfectly smooth on all devices, same battery life as before, no connectivity issues, no problems with any of the apps I've tried. This is an iOS version that has lots of interesting potential.

It seems there's a batch of faulty iPads Pro 10.5 out there which go belly up as soon as you pick them up. Any problems experienced on those is more likely due to a hardware or firmware issue than due to iOS 11.

I've noticed my SE is a bit more 'juddery' running some apps, but apart from that no major issues. I like some of the new UI. I don't like the Files system so far though, and the new Store design is hideous - from a visual and usability perspective. I clicked a link to an app on here yesterday, and the Store screenshots were no bigger than thumbnails - they wouldn't resize. Checked it on here (iPad running iOS 10) and they were fine.

So while it's reassuring to read the Air 2 is working ok with the update, I'm still hanging back. The dock feature sounds mega-useful, but that Store design? And what other nasties are lurking away in the sub-menus?

Dunno, might wait for the next update 'tweak'. While it's nice to be on the latest version, I wish I hadn't updated my iPhone.

  • Same here, updated my iphone se, holding on on the air 2.

The bold titles look horrendous though, like how is this outdated look supposed to be an improvement? And the new files app is total rubish. Just an icloud app, nothing I need or want. But the workflow improvements are welcome.

  • Can iOS11 shows data EXIF on the camera roll after shooting a photo?

  • If iOS 11 switches on things like Wifi, Bluetooth and Location Services, then calls home, this will more than likely effect how quickly the OS operates and reduce battery life, even if only a little, but now the system is fully 64bit this should increase it's performance slightly.

Other things like the AppStore well that's the hallmark of Apple - same kind of attitude with regard to iTunes down the years.

I agree. I put iOS 11 on my Air 2 and have been pleasantly surprised at how good it's running. Google machine "ipad pro 10.5 problems" and a litany if results from forums, tech blogs, even Apple's own board show problems with iPad Pro hardware before, during and after iOS 11 went public.

It's been difficult not to get myself in debt by picking up a 10.5 256GB since they launched, but reports here & like those that I mentioned have given me pause and I'm being patient. I want a Pro from the second or third wave from Foxconn, because Apple does have very good QC and units from later shipments I think logically will be trouble free, and ironed out...hope so.

I feel for cats who early adopted and are getting lemons or hassles on the way to finally getting everything straight. But as far as operating system updates go iOS 11, for me, knock on wood, has been excellent. And, I don't say that to piss off anyone, to the contrary- I want them to know that once their return/repair/service, etc is finished the new iOS environment is very cool, especially for Music Production. Hope everyone gets shit straightened out... Apple should not drag their dick on this or give frustrated users a hassle, especially with the latest numbers on the tablet/mobile computing market showing they can't spare to lose existing customers.

Seconded. I'm seriously eyeballing the 10.5; that's the model that hits all the sweetspots for me. But I'm waiting patiently for all the mentions of mysterious issues to disappear from the boards before I jump in...

  • Updated my iPhone 6 and it's now very sluggish, slow, buggy, etc. The music player refuses to stay on my playlists while using Bluetooth; it defaults to my iTunes Music Match in the cloud instead of playing the stuff I have on the device.

This is the absolute problem with Apple 'mysterious issues', alarm bells ringing, about how Apple admits faults and deals with them.

  • I got an iPad Pro 10.5/256GB about a month after they came out, and I’ve been super happy with it. Haven’t seen any of the hardware issues, battery life, etc. that I’ve read about here.

I updated to iOS11 went it went GM last week and have had no problems with it. BT is great (for a change!) seamlessly handing control back and forth between my Win10 laptop and iPad.

Looking forward to apps actually taking advantage of the new features, particularly drag’n’drop between audio apps. Love this update.

If this is the case, then when are Apple going to issue a recall of the defective devices is the question.

My 9.7 had to be replaced due to the lightning jack going bad, so I went with the 10.5. Only had it a few days. Feeling anxiety about 64gb... the 9.7 was my 1st 32. So far humming along and nothing to report.

Especially if the audio issues & screen yellowing are as prevalent as it seems. Seriously, Google ‘iPad Pro issues’ or problems and there are reports from iMore, several Mac forums and some respected tech blogs about the weird screens on some and it hasn’t just been early adopters here in our community who noticed latency and other audio anomalies.

The interesting thing was when the first iPad Pro 12.9 was released it had reports of buggy hardware, etc.; some will show up if you look for the search terms above. A few bloggers made the point that when faced with a dwindling tablet market & now having a two tiered product line with the Pro’s possessing close to laptop specs and certainly being at, or OVER, laptop prices Apple can’t leave prospective customers and especially early adopters twisting in the wind.

If they’re going to hype these Pro’s as being new phase devices capable of desktop/laptop replacement there shouldn’t be ANYTHING compromising it’s operation.

  • You can google iPad Air 2 issues as well and see a bunch of stuff.

I’ve seen the multi-instance bug plenty on iPad Air 2 as well. Spent a lot of time accusing a beta AU product of being unready because of this :#

Based on the WWDC 2017 presentation it looks like there’s new energy in the iOS audio team, hopefully this means good news going forward.

Or iPad 2/3/New/etc. or iPhone 4/4s/5/etc. Bendgate, antennagate, backlight bleed, yellow screen, white balance... Hang around long enough and you realise every single iOS device has some catastrophic flaw that later turns out to be actually nothing.

I buy from Apple, knowing I can return it within 2 weeks for any reason, even if I just changed my mind. Doesn’t happen often though.

Just updated my iphone 6 and I'm not noticing any real difference in performance, yet.
The GIANT headers in the Apple apps are stupid, though. I'm pretty sure I know when I'm in Recents, or Messages.

  • I just tried restoring to a backup from before I upgraded and it just restores to iOS11. FU&%ERS!

Eh. You just learned that "backup" doesn't mean the same to Apple as it does (did?) to the rest of the world. I learned that to my shock several OS versions back.

  • The file system of iTunes and iOS is stuck circa 20th Century, the whole idea of connectivity even between apps requires half baked crazy solutions, usually involving a pinch of witchcraft, borders on the absurd.

I thought this, on day one. But the Files App is getting better, so hopefully more will adopt and it will become really useful. Ditto the side by side thing. I would like Wish List back, but on the plus side, not having it will save me money. :)

As you will have found, using iTunes to restore a backup will also automatically install the latest version of your apps, whether you want them or not, and you will likely need to manually restore some IAP’s.

After becoming exasperated with the sheer crapness of iTunes, I moved to a third party program, iMazing 2, which does a much better job, no hassle. Works on Mac and PC.

  • I am surprised to see people saying bluetooth being worse with iOS 11. I updated and couldn't believe how much better bluetooth works for me. I am now starting to think it may just be confirmation bias or something. The eternal optimists will see updates as a guarantee to be better while the eternal pessimists will be sure any updates will have bugs. :D

Please keep me informed once you pick one up and are happy with it :D will probably drive in and grab one if that's the case. For now I'm standing by.

  • Initially I thought my upgrades were smooth.

Things I've noticed: 7plus is getting iMessages from years ago every time I restart, this is with iMessages off in settings. Sometimes these messages can't be swiped away and phone freezes requiring a hard reset.
Issues showing my phone as a hotspot/establishing connection to my iPad. Was working fine on iOS 10.

10.5 iPad on 11 seems to have more audio crackles/latency with same BM3 sets that were created on 2016 pro.

Torn between adding all files on ipad to files app, or specific apps according to file type like books to documents 6/goodreader/marvin and samples to audioshare or bm3.
Seems files is very cloud centric, are you guys putting all files on iPad in files app, or still splitting them according to type/app?

Same here. The 64Gb has already broken £450 threshold on ebay uk.

  • Guys can anyone test if the Session Band apps work in IOS11?

Haven't done anything else but open and play three or four of them and they all seem fine. If you'd like me to run something specific just let me know...

  • Thnks Sir!
iPad updated. I know I bit the billet but held out iphone where all my beautiful SessionBand apps live. <3

The original "Session Band" app is still 32 bit, all the other ones I've tried work fine for me.

  • It looks like about 25% of the owners of devices capable of running iOS 11 have upgraded to iOS 11 in the first week.

Personally I love iOS 11 and am thrilled with the new features. Can't imagine going back. The smart reverse is better than nothing and you can but a button to switch it on and off in the command center. No serious issues so far.

I am somewhat torn on the the new app store; look and feel seems to be designed for 4 year olds, but the overall functionality for finding researching apps works much better for me, I hated the old limited pop-up app descriptions, but really love the new full page displays. The new purchased apps interface just plan sucks, I have over 2500 apps so my list is ..... Since I am an Apple music subscriber I am, however, already "used" to this look and feel from the iTunes Apple music portion of iTunes.

What is smart reverse? I haven't heard of that.
