I'm about 140 comments out of the loop. Can somebody bring me up to speed? I'm kind of surprised this is still kicking around. What is the latest?
The AppStore is transforming into iTunes
I haven't timed it, but it defintiely drains quicker - I reckon by about 25%.
Anybody knows how is going with Roli apps? Since these are powersellers for iDevices (the Roli blocks) maybe they will be more ears open...
I get around 10 hours for a full charge on 10.5 pro when I am just listening to music, browsing the web, watching vids, or doing light AUM jamming. If I’m doing a multi-AU/Zeeon/Model 15 project, obviously less. I’m still convinced the battery drain fear is just paranoia until I see some proof (and I’m sure there are plenty of nerds out there to measure and document this sort of thing).
I will say though, that the Apple Pencil claim of ‘15 seconds of charging will give you up to 30 minutes of writing/drawing time’ is bogus. Gave it a generous 20 seconds last night and got maybe 4 minutes out of it before it was dead again.
iOS 11 still sucks donkey dick and the forced downloads are becoming more frequent.
Won’t need the nerds to confirm faster drain using 11 on my older devices, iPhone 6, Air 2. It’s quite obvious, and started immediately after update. Shut down all the background crap and new extra services but there’s clearly more going on under the hood that’s not accessible to users
Absolutely, my Air 2 and iPhone SE battery life dramatically dropped during the first week or so when the update was ‘doing its stuff’, and it’s recovered a bit but is nowhere near what it was. And that’s after shutting off a whole lot of features I was using before the update. Battery charging is taking longer too.
Maybe it’s more of an issue for older devices with older batteries, but to say it’s not happening (at least to some users) just isn’t true.
I’m seeing less battery life, but I’ve also witnessed more setups that a) heat my iPad up b) seem more battery hungry. So, I’m unsure what the real cause or causes are. Could it be iOS 11? Could it be that apps are just becoming more power hungry? Could it be that my Air2 is getting old and losing battery and heating more due to use?
My iPad gets a lot of use compared to what I guess many people do with there iPads. Why do I say that? Well, I have my iPad running nearly every day for most of the waking day! Even when I am bed ridden and in pain due to my illness, I often have music playing or a book being read on it!
The more and more I think about it, I see I’m going have to think of a new one sooner rather than later.
I noticed mine’s been hotter too - not just running apps like Gadget, but even simple stuff.
Maybe it’s an age thing.
The conspiracy theorist in me thinks it may be Apples built in time bomb that is due to go off a) because they want me to get a new iPad b) they are pissed off because I have a sticker over my front facing cam
I’ve noticed several times in the last week, when picking up my phone it’s no longer ‘asleep’, as it should be, but awake and with the camera on. Not sure if I should be worried about this or not, But if they are watching me next time I’ll show them my arse.
I used to often -it’s the voyeur in me lol. That’s totally the wrong word lol
Or maybe older iPads are starting to show their age? I’m not saying they’re ready to die just maybe they are minus 10% since new.
That’s not unlikely. My Air 2 is pretty new (bought one quite recently) and it’s still getting almost 10 hours of regular daily use (i.e. not Gadget) on iOS11. Which is what Apple promised.
My both Air 2s are about 2 years old and I wouldn’t be surprised if each had 300 to 400 cycles on it. I remember reading somewhere that a MacBook battery starts showing replace soon message at about 500 cycles. I’m guessing with iPads won’t be far off that.
The good thing is that there’s no easy way to find out battery cycles on the iPad so as long as it is in a good nick they do retain value pretty well. I have a feeling I might be replacing one of mine around Christmas for the 10.5 Pro.
That’s scary as I’ve had my Air2 since April 2015 and has been used and charged nearly every day and sometimes twice per day! (give or take a few weeks for holidays)
That still doesn’t explain the sudden change after updating the iOS. So maybe older batteries take an extra hit with 11.
I kinda think it’s a bit of all there - iOS 11 on an old iPad using new super apps
But. There has been a sudden, noticeable drop for some users, including me. And the only change was the iOS update.
Yeah same here, so not disagreeing that iOS 11 is a battery issue for some. I still think some of my heating and battery issues are all three making the situation even worse or maybe I’m just looking to convince myself that after over 700 cycles easily, I need a new iPad lol
@MonzoPro
Just for reference, on average, I’m looking at 6 hours per charge now opposed to around just under 8 before iOS 11
Yeah I reckon that's about the same as mine.
I’ve been going through my settings and had missed a few switch offs as I’ve just recently restarted my iPad from scratch.
Since doing this I’ve seen an odd thing:
If I click on any folder to open that folder of apps, there is a very brief image in the top left hand corner of a return to certain app button (you know, the ones you often get when following a link to the shop and then you can click on it and return to where you was on the internet. The funny thing is it says Gadget on it. I can’t screen grab it, as it’s too quick. I am convinced now more than ever that Gadget is problematic. I have triple checked and Gadget is not open in the background and have open and closed it to make sure it’s not ghosting. Still does it after a restart of my iPad.
Anyone else experienced this?
What are you, some kind of godless terrorist!
'But if they are watching me next time I’ll show them my arse'
not showing mine, unfortunately i wasn't given one. it'll have be bubble gum over the glory hole o_O
I´m also not a friend of iOS 11. my iPhone 6S plus lags a bit more and the app store.....i doesn´t visit it much now.
I really didn´t thought that but i think if my iPhone ever dies i buy a cheap android phone since it´s all i would need.
I hope coming updates of software and hardware might change my mind.
The macs gone the same way. I guess all love has and end one day
I have one more thing to say, sometimes odd stuff happens:
I’m sure most of us with older iPads disengage most every power hungry thing we can think of in the settings!? Well for whatever reasons, some settings seem to get set back again! Yes, I’m a firm believer that iOS 11 has some odd quirks that funk about with the settings.
Here’s a few oddities I’ve found so far:
The iPad storage list is accurate with even fewer apps now. Many apps take up more storage space than they show.
I’ve had to disable some settings many times. This happens with some settings that we know kills battery performance on older iPads. Keep checking settings if battery life starts going funky. And I really do mean disable everything you can, as iOS 11 is a battery hog IMO.
IAA ghosting and apps doing background stuff is far harder to track down. I am often seeing brief glimpses of the button to take you back to an app that then disappears until you do certain things. Something is definitely amiss with background tasks and I spend an age checking all settings and individual app settings to disable what I can.
Switching off as many tasks as possible has helped with reducing the iPad heating problem and I have regained 1 hour of battery life, still not quite the level I was getting with iOS 10.
Some files do go missing or are not showing correctly within the files app. This seems to be linked with certain apps.
Check all your individual music apps, especially the Korg ones. Disenabling nearly all settings such as analytics and network midi unless you need them - every task shut down helps!
Other than these problems I like iOS 11.
