  • I am sure Chris will become a champion for the Airs soon enough. I think I know this because having seen the apps in his collection via AppZapp, those apps will all get an injection of speed. Not sure of how AppZapp works cos iTunes says I have 241 apps and AZ says 72? Oh well, that nicely conceals the amount of cash I've spent on apps.

  • Well, after read all your comments, the performance of the new iPad is amazing and, obviously, I was wrong.
Maybe I must recycle mine next summer.

  • Read the thread end to end. Sold my 3/64 picked up a 5/128 yesterday. Heh heh heh he hee hee Aaahh!

  • Mmhhh.... i wanted to wait for an ipad mini 2 but i'm not sure now if i should get an ipad air now. I still have an iphone to carry around and the sharper display (more ppi) of the mini is just a minor plus. Also i want to take it to the limit and i think the air could have the better performance when it comes to long time using. (F.e. the iphone clocks down to 1.0 Ghz after 2 minutes of heavy use).

  • The new iPad Air is so easy to get cracked in its glass. I got that fate less than 5 days of use. It is really not so tough as the iPad 2 I wanted to replace. The apple store guy also do not want to replace it unless I pay $299 fee. What a ridiculous service they have!

  • @DonC.really sorry to hear this...
    how did you crack it?
We're you playing with a music app?
    What app?
What part of the screen cracked?

  • Hope this didn't happen whilst drumming a beat or something similar......:(

  • Uhhh, that doesn't sound good. I wonder if the mini will be more robust. My iPhone get some heavy hits from me.... seems good ;) I was going to buy an iPad Air or iPhone 5s today but i had "luck" and nothing was available today..... then come home and find some heavy bills from hospital in the letter box..... seems i will stay on an old iPhone for a while :( Perhaps it's good so.

  • @DonC Really? Cracked glass within 5 days and even though it will still be on guarantee Apple will not replace it? My work colleague had problems with his iPhone 5 (he actually dropped it on his skiing holiday). His guarantee had about 11 days to run out. Guess what? He got a brand new iPhone 5. I still think that a cracked glass within 5 days is just incredible. That thing is light but it is robustly built. Any photos?

  • Not to read too much into it but donc has one post. I wonder if angieL will show up soon helpfully linking donc to cheap iPad insurance with free ugg boots.

I'm wondering if it went 'DONC!'...

  • According to AppZapp the current value of all my apps is $7355. Obviously a lot of discounts and temp free apps in there, but it's still sad. :( I never look at that page, makes me grumpy, but since FrankieJay brought it up...By the way, you left your walking stick at my place again FJ, and I told you not to try and flush your shitbag down my toilet, g'pa.

"The new iPad Air is so easy to get cracked in its glass" / DonC

Since the iPad 2 release I've dropped it so many times it's just getting silly. I also have a tendency to end up sleeping on it. I've stepped on it few times. It's been on the occasional flying adventure. Not a ding or scratch on it. It's amazing, I just don't care anymore cos the thing won't break or scratch. The iPad Air, on the other hand, well, looking at some drop/stress tests the thing basically breaks apart before any real testing has begun. Basically scoring 1/5 everywhere on build quality. But hey, it's thinner then a pencil at least! :) I'm gonna need to glue this thing to a stand. Dunno what it is with me and dropping iPads all over the place. :/

  • @DonC has made one provicative comment. It'd be nice to know if it's real. Personally, I'm waiting for the OtterBox case. It adds weight but it's worth it for me.

  • "By the way, you left your walking stick at my place again FJ, and I told you not to try and flush your shitbag down my toilet, g'pa." Now that's being grumpy. Chill.

@DonC I'd still like to see photos of that cracked iPad Air. Samsung in disguise? I just find it hard to believe an iPad Air will crack up so easily.

  • I used to be incredibly protective of my Apple gadgets, but with my latest (iPad 3) I decided not to use any case or screen protector from day one, and have nothing bad to show for it.

That being said, if the iPad Air is so much lighter and thinner, it could easily bear a bit of extra bulk/weight from a decent case, which should alleviate any concerns (real or imagined).

  • Normally I don't really go with cases and such for my iPhone or iPad either. I might when travelling with the iPad just to disguise it a little bit while I carry it, or maybe just to angle it some, but not so much for protection.

With my iPad Air, the very first thing I did was order a new case for it. I don't doubt that it's well made, but it definitely has a much less solid feel to it. Hard not to notice the way the glass feels like it's floating slightly above the display now, instead of firmly a part of it.

I guess the weight had to come off from a lot of different places to get it this light, which is a fine trade off as far as I'm concerned. I'm not at all worried about breaking it while using it, even banging on it for some drum work. But I have a feeling it's MUCH less succeptible to drops now. Where as with my iPad4 I would literally toss it on the bed or couch and not flinch if it slid off onto the carpet, with the Air I'd be a little concerned.

  • I can't quite put my finger on it...:)...but when tapping the screen, the sound it makes gives the impression it's not as thick...kinda hollow...(air?).its something you notice straight away. The thinner casing may have something to do with it too.,can't find any reports of cracked screens ..yet.

It is completely hollow under the bezels, other models do have hollow spaces under too. But the Air being so much thinner with the material used, and the design, makes the whole thing so much more susceptible to bending and shattering the glass. There's some slow-mo captured with high speed cameras showing the whole thing just ripples apart when dropped on the side.

I'd like to see this company demo their iPad cases for the Air by dropping it from space, like this earlier iPad model...cos I mean it can happen...dropping your iPad from space...

Even though I have my doubts about the DonC post (he joined just to post it, hasn't followed up, no indication whether it happened during normal use or whether he dropped it, not even an indication of audio/music use) the thin glass is a worry. Maybe Apple have gone too far in shaving off weight, or they still intend the iPad for light use only ( as with memory size ). Or they want to sell more cases.

In any case ;-) , if they do get a lot of returns with cracked glass or otherwise damaged displays they might improve in the next version. OTH, I cannot imagine them releasing a weak product that would damage their reputation and their guarantee repair budget...

  • Sorry if this is taking things too far...

    http://mobile.informationweek.com/80256/show/a284170c412f2c321182db520846698a/?

IHS estimates that the display itself costs Apple about $90 each (at production volumes) and the touchscreen module adds another $43. The entire display costs a whopping $133. The benefits? The iPad 3's display measured 2.23 mm thick. The iPad Air's display measures 1.8mm thick. (Yes, the display dropped one-half of one millimeter.) There's no word on the difference in weight.

    http://m.cnet.com/news/fewer-leds-mean-leaner-ipad-air-researcher-says/57610983

"The Air's display is 1.8 millimeters thick, compared with about 2.23 millimeters for the older-generation iPad. Meanwhile, the touch screen is also thinner with its use of an expensive cyclo olephin polymer (COP) film sensor versus the thicker and cheaper glass sensor used in the previous models," iSuppli said in its report.

Still,...stopped us moaning about the ram,or lack there of:)

"Still,...stopped us moaning about the ram,or lack there of:)"

Never!! This just another thing we can moan about. When it eventually arrives here I'll be flooding this place with so much bitchin n moaning...Oh and another thing, they placed both L/R speakers on the same side, awesome engineering there Apple! I was planning on watching The Wire on this thing, it being 4:3 AR and all...but noooo

  • Having played with the iPad Air yesterday at the Convent Garden store, I have to say it is stunningly light and more powerful compared to my iPad 4. The first thing that came to my mind about its light weight is that I will be using it on stage for longer spells with the right case. I have a Snuggs case which allows me to comfortably hold and play the iPad standing up. I did play the 4 on stage but it gets tiring very quickly because of its weight. On the other hand I will be taking less chances with messing about with the iPad Air. If you haven't decided yet to buy one, try one at your Apple store and you won't want to put this baby down. It is the best and most powerful iPad to date bar none. Not perfect but the best tablet around.

The spec drools have analysed the strength of the iPad Air glass all over the net but I am always interested in real life scenarios of actually using stuff. This baby will crack if you drop it from a relatively great height. Some of the tests done by The Android Authority puts things in perspective - Android devices are much less sturdy and more likely to fall apart quickly although some have much more RAM than Apple's but lack the rock solid seamless integration of software and hardware. A great example is AudioBus on iDevices.

  • "The Android Authority puts things in perspective - Android devices are much less sturdy and more likely to fall apart quickly"

The Air being an exception here though. It seems Air is one of the available tablets right now that is the most likely to fall apart. Hm I wonder how many days, or perhaps even weeks, mine will last without a proper case on it. :/

  • @ChrisG - I see my recent post is right after your one :-) This is not intentional lol. I am just saying it for clarity. I enjoy posting on this forum and I think you do as well. If we do have differing opinions on some stuff, let us just see those different points of view as two sides of the same coin - the 3D effect. I waded through your app collection on AppZapp because I thought it was the same ChrisG on the AB forum and it was. No slight was meant. We do have quite a few of the same music apps and I did discover some "new" apps like iAmGuitar from your collection.

  • I'm betting DonC put it down on his car seat while he shoved something in the back, then sat on it when he got in the car...

  • I absolutely agree with everything you just said FrankeJay (as long as we agree on those few minor issues like the ram and whatnot;)! Ok let's move on then. Did you get a chance to try out the official Apple case (I've never had one, maybe it's more for protecting against scratches etc?).

The shitbag thing and AppZapp. The shitbag thing was a, very poorly written, joke in regards to commonstookie calling us grumpy. And the fact that this forum has an avarage age of 60-70 something was it? :) So nothing to do at all with anything you actually posted, totally my bad

But speaking of AppZapp, I think I'm the first person to ever get banned on AppZapp lol. It's a long story, but had something to do with me and a whole gang of Russians umm...being grumpy I guess? I'm un-banned now tho, some young lady had sent some emails to the AppZapp admins in my defence (Lol seriously).
