  • I upgraded from an ipad4 today, to the 32GB wifi Air. I use my iPad all the time, but I found the iPad 3 and 4 heavy, and uncomfortable to hold over time with that shallow bevel on the back. I had been debating for a long time about going to a retina mini when they were announced, but then I saw how small the new Air was and knew that it solved my issues.

It was a no brainer for me more because of comfort in daily use than needing the CPU power, though that's certainly nice too. Only had time to mess around with the demo of Auria and some of my synths like alchemy and nave so far, but things are very smooth. Auria especially, quickly resizing or moving parts while 18 tracks of audio played in the demo was very fluid.

Day to day apps are slightly faster, but nothing huge. The new wifi seems to be a bit faster as well when I was installing my bonus packs for alchemy, but again it was slight at best.

Physically it doesn't feel at all like th ipad4 or earlier, with those feeling like solid lumps of glass and aluminum. The Air feels much lighter, but the display flexes more when you touch it hard, and the whole thing feels more hollow than before. Not in a bad way necessarily, it still feels really strong for how light it now is. It's just a different feel now.

For me it was well worth the upgrade, much easier to hold and there's no denying that extra power will come in handy for my music making too. Once I sell the ipad4, not a bad upgrade investment at all.

  • @munibeast, I have to agree. A 16gb device with a retina display is ridiculous.

If I buy 3 HD movies from iTunes my iPad is full... That's before you load up your email, sync any photos or try to take any HD videos.

I was shocked that the first retina iPad did not bump the minimum storage to 32gb, and didn't start to understand until I heard about the new "amazing cloud syncing" service subscriptions. Grrrr...

  • Alchemy and Beatmaker2 alone counts 30GB on my device... i always go for the biggest versions!

So true, galaxyexplorer! My example was an attempt to consider the "average iPad user" which is much less than heavy users like us. Its baffling either way. :-(

  • I played now with the new Air and the old mini which looks now the same. The Air looks and feel really great but playing with booth side by side i'm now def. sure that i would go with an iPad mini retina 128GB 4G space grey! I will order one online as soon as possible (think in about 3 weeks) then i have 14 days to test it. If it will not work for me i send it back and get again an iPhone 5S or a wonder happens before and Animoog and SunrizerXS gets a "late" update like Addictive Synth Micro ;) then i would also stay at least a year with an iPhone. That's the plan :D

  • This sounds primising from the Auria forum....

I will be posting my videos on my A.I.R.Studio youtube site in the next day or so but so far here is some conclusions. I was able to load 7 inter apps all at the same time on 7 tracks while running Midi Pattern Sequencer in the background sending the midi note data to all the synths at once and Auria controlling the midi clock and not a glitch!!! Also ran all slots full in Audiobus and I used all the heavy synths like Nave, Magelan, iSem, while also running Midi Pattern sequencer in the background driving all the midi data and running Beatmachine locked up to midi clock from Auria and all recorded and played back in time to the metronome and synced well in Auria. All the while the cpu never went much above 25% and my memory reading stayed at full green most of the time. The iPad Air so far has been amazing. In video I rendered a 8 min picture in picture video in Pinnacle Studio in 2min34 sec. This used to take 8-10 mins on my iPad 4. So I have some videos to make and more tests to do in the area of plugins and mastering so I will get back to everyone with more info. cheers.

That sounds good. No mention of audiobus, though. I just went to see the air in the store and almost took it home. The only problem being lack of money... And I was going to wait for the new mini anyways, wasn't I? I was actually able to hold it quite comfortably in one hand. But it wouldn't fit in a pocket like the mini. What I don't get is that stealth gray color. Why don't they just keep the aluminum natural and have a choice of black or white for the bezel? I think black and aluminum color would look better than that space gray.

  • @DaveMagoo.
    That's sounding more promising.

  • The video also from that auria thread

Am sure some of you have already seen but for those that haven't

  • Looks impressive. Maybe the RAM limitation isnt holding things up much after all.

  • I'm going to remain a little skeptical about this. I haven't seen any benchmark testing that claims 200% CPU increase over the A6x. Closer to 40/80 range. It's one thing to open a few apps and run a short burst if midi through them, but will have to see if it can keep them stable for actual work. I hope I'm wrong because that would be nice, but I'd like to hear from someone other than Auria, which has a dog in the fight.

  • @smeeeth agree/disagree.

Agree: I'm going to remain skeptical as well. What I'd really like to see is how something quantifiable runs on both a 4 and an air (or even a 2 or a 3). Something like:

    1. Close everything and restart the ipad.
    2. Load the auria demo project.
    3. Add the included basic reverb as an insert effect on track 1
    4. start play back
    5. stop play back
    6. repeat steps 3-5 until playback stutters
    7. Report how many you were able to add on both machines.

ProTools users used to use a similar test to spec different native machine builds. It was very valuable.

Disagree: Auria has a dog in the fight but it's not in their interest to oversell the capabilities of the Air only to have their support flooded with complaints. Also, fwiw, that post is from a user, not the Auria team.

  • And from what I would consider one of the most reliable sources from the Auria user base fwiw. Not that there aren't tons of reliable sources there. Anthony is very reliable IMO.

  • Well my new iPad 4 arrived yesterday and working in Auria and Cubasis this evening my main problem was that I was often running out of memory. In Auria memory seems to be much more of a problem than CPU. And since the Air has 30% less RAM in effect then the iPad 4 I think my choice was probably the right one - however I am still open-minded should other people's experiences go against this impression.

Another observation is that with the retina display and the more powerful CPU the iPad 4 has noticeably less battery life than the 2.

  • Strange, I missed that whole Audiobus sentence last page... Oh well. So it does look good with audiobus too.

  • edited November 2013

"And since the Air has 30% less RAM in effect then the iPad 4"...do what now? I get that someone posted that the A7 needs more ram because it's 64 bit but I have never seen any evidence of that anywhere as far as the iPad is concerned. Certainly the real world testimony of users completely refutes this wild claim.

  • The 30-40% extra RAM thing that's going around stems from the anandtech review. He explained one advantage with apps optimized/compiled as 64bit would see a boost in CPU performance, but at the cost of using a lot more RAM.

  • To be honest I would be more than happy to be wrong :) But yes in Anand's review he states that a 64bit environment uses a larger address space and therefore more RAM. But then again maybe that doesn't apply to 32 bit apps? I asked on the Anand forum but no-one could clarify.

  • Here's a quick review I did of the Air and using music apps on it:

    .

  • Bummer situation.

  • @Tarekith, Nice review. & lol @ "Anyone want to buy a 16GB iPad4? :)". Actually, I have an iPad 2 32gb w AT&T service for sale as well. It seems Apple thinks my iPad 2 is nearly as valuable as the iPad air, so please contact me first, folks.

  • 16GB iPad 4 wifi and cellular for sale in South London. The 128GB iPad Air is running out of stock everywhere it seems in the UK. I wonder why? You would have thought that as the most expensive there'll be many of them around except if their inventory is really low with retailers. The other thing is it is a risk to go and buy these new iPads in store as they are selling fast. Best to order them online.

  • @richardyot "Another observation is that with the retina display and the more powerful CPU the iPad 4 has noticeably less battery life than the 2."
I have to iPad2 (16&64) and my iPad retina (64) and I don' notice that big difference in battery life. At least, in my daily workflow.
The bad news to me is that I have purchased it in August, and now it's 100 euros cheaper.

  • In the other hand, Audiobus + 7 of most powerfull synths, and CPU running under 25%...I don't say this isn't true, but let me be a bit skeptical.

  • Has anyone else purchased the IPAir and pushed it to the limits w music apps and AudioBus? If so please post more info...

I plan to get either the IPAir or Mini2 some time in the new year. I'm bummed about the 1 gb issue, but hoping the AB + 7 @fjcblanco is reasonably skeptical about turns out to be accurate.

  • Got my 128GB Air today (space gray is sexy as hell, in my humble opinion). So anyway, I tried out something that my iPad 4 never liked very much, running my guitar through jamup, MIDI Guitar, and a synth at the same time. It seemed to work much better, in fact I did that with megellan, sampletank and iPolysix running at the same time and the iPad Air didn't seem to have a problem with it at all. On the iPad 4 just trying that with one synth would frequently result in a glitchy distorted mess.

  • Thanks, @Matthew. More encouraging news re. the IPAir!

  • @Matthew Awesome! That sounds very promising. I wonder if the 5S would be similar performance wise. But I'll have to pay for the 5 for another year anyways so can't upgrade the phone yet.
