The iPad Air makes no sense to me. Unless it really has 2GB ram, then why would anyone want this when the assuming 1GB ram iPad mini retina is $100 cheaper with exact same other specs (including screen resolution)?
I can't figure out why they don't release ram specs, even on the tech specs page of their website. I mean, it is what it is, why not disclose it.
Obviously an iPad Pro is coming, but when is the question...
This is another thing I wouldn't call "obvious". I wouldn't expect them to do anything they don't have to do. And there is nothing suggesting that they need a "pro" version in my opinion. Did you see the video they showed? They had iPads in emergency rooms, in cockpits of airplanes, underwater with divers...I'm not sure who this "pro" ipad would target if not those folks. I think Apple believes it when they tell you this is the best tablet on the planet. I think they would call the iPad Air their pro model.
There will be a pro. I'd bet a dollar on it. It'll have the new higher resolution retina screen that Apple is reported to be testing and the fingerprint reader and more ram. They will target it at enterprise use.
hahaha... ;-) You're on. Time frame? I'll take the bet for the next two years at least.
Come on give yourself a chance at least and limit it to only a year. I'd feel bad taking your money otherwise lol.
I don't predict an iPad pro. Here is what I predict for the iPad 6/iPad Air 2/iPad Zen/whatever. A8 chip. Thinner. Lighter. Until they're not selling them like water to people on fire, there aren't going to be any major changes. Because, you know...it ain't broken.
Anyone think they kept only 512mb in the new mini? I'm thinking it almost has to have at least 1GB now with that A7 in there. If it has 1GB I might be switching to mini.
Yeah, I would expect them to bump the ram in both, honestly, but Apple is damn hard to predict. So my scenarios are this; If they've bumped the iPad Air to 2GB, there is nothing else to discuss. I'm getting that. However, if they've bumped the mini to 1 and the Air is still only 1....well I'll have to really consider my options. That being said, I just can NOT see them making the specs for the two iPads that identical. That just seems crazy to me. Surely as ChrisG said there will be 2GB in the Air. Surely.
I guess we'll have to wait a few weeks until some tech site does a tear-down, which TBH I think is a bit silly. It's an important spec, with fundamental implications for memory-intensive tasks, so why keep it a secret?
Originally, the iPad was conceived as a device for content consumption, and it didn't matter so much. Now, as acknowledged even in this presentation itself, the newer more powerful iPads are being used more and more for content creation and editing-not just music, but video and graphics as well-system memory is becoming a critical spec too.
As we can see in this thread alone, the fact that it is being kept secret is making the choice between Air and Mini 2 (or upgrading at all) difficult for many of us.
The mini comes later in november... the Air on the first. I think as usual there will be benchmark out there which shows the clock speed (maybe higher on the iPads???) and ram on the first day release. If the Air will have 1GB it's clear. But i believe it's still 1GB... i bet a dollar (or €). But to be fair to apple the 1 in the 5s was really exact one the 3GB in the Note 3 f.e. is about 2.38.... But the deal would for me really 2GB ram too to go for a tablet. If it's just 1.... i'm out this year too because all the music tools are too limited (for me) with 1GB ram on a iPad. But i think in general it's not bad that there are now 3 A7 devices out..... in a year it will benefit a lot from this i think!
.
Was going to say the same thing. My MPB is fine for my iMovie ditties but when you're trying to color correct 5000 frames of 4k video (or run a native ProTools rig with 60 high end plugins on 24/96 audio) that money and power makes an awful lot of sense. Sort of wish I still had a need for it!
I love that they gave the new mini a 128GB option, A7 chip and retina display while keeping the size the same. I do hope the RAM has been bumped to at least 1GB. Then I will most definitely get the mini and not the air.
Yeah the mini is the show stealer this time around IMHO. If both the mini and the air have 1GB ram then there will be ridiculous demand for the mini.
But, now that iPhone 5s and mini 2 both have 326ppi resolutions, this means that their flagship iPad is under spec'd which makes me wonder if they might pull an iPad 3 on us again and update off-cycle with a pro (or whatever). Can't decide if I want to take the chance on waiting for that or not.
BTW, that Mac Pro is absolutely insane. Way too much power for me but I don't think the price is out of line for what it is. I remember spending about $3k on my first custom laptop. It was a Compaq POS and had only 16GB of hard drive space!
@Ringleader:i was thinking the same regarding"new ipad 3".before the keynote i was thinking to sell my iPad 4 to get the new one but maybe i'll wait and see what the next couple of months will bring..
.
You know, at some point I would think that the focus would shift so that the iPad would be the device used to introduce the new processors and state of the art hardware.
In the keynote when the were saying stuff like the ipad having no purpose because it was essentially the same (as an iPhone I assume) I was thinking they were going to unleash something crazy on us. But we really got just that... more of the same.
Don't get me wrong, these new iPads will likely run circles around my iPad 3, but especially now that iPhones also can use the CCK, what really makes the iPad different from the iPhone except for the size?
size matters![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)

I think the 13" MBP with Retina coming down to $1299 is pretty sweet. I'm in the market. Alas, no Firewire port on it and I still use a Digi002 Firewire audio interface. They sell a thunderbolt->firewire adapter but the 002 is firewire 400 and the adapter is firewire 800.
Maybe it's time for a new interface. Anyone want to buy my Digi002?
@syrupcore you can buy a cable with FW 800 on one end and FW 400 on the other or a small adaptor. Here are some amazon results: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_12?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=firewire 400 to 800&sprefix=firewire+400,aps,338&rh=i:aps,k:firewire 400 to 800
Maybe I'm clutching at straws with the ram thing but I lost count of the number of times they said how fast the air was.
Don't think they said it as much for the mini.
I'll stick my neck out and say its gonna have 2.
Cheers @munibeast.
@commonstookie - It also states on the mini page under Design, "So when we thought about which enhancements to bring to the new iPad mini, there was only one answer: all of them." Marketing fluff, yes, but it does imply that they have the same innards (to me). If the ram was the only feature that separates the two you'd think they would be exploiting it. The air could be overclocked too, I suppose. I guess we won't know for sure until someone gets one. Hopefully somebody reports on it before the official release date.
I guess the audio output quality (DAC) of all three device form factors is equally good? Kind of take that for granted nowadays and it's probably just baked into the A7 chip.
think I'll be giving the air a miss...got a thing about odd numbers and if the 3 is anything to go by....
Interesting take on it from Tim @ disschord
Mini2 will do for now.
Not sure I get his take. If the iPad air is going to suffer from an underpowered GPU, then the mini2 will also since they both have the same processor and resolution.
But was the ipad 4 underpowered.... the ipad air should do the job i think. But if the new pads really get the same A7 which the iPhone 5s still have, inclusive same gpu. The ipad's must handle 4 times more pixels on the screen. That means perhaps really the iPad could be underpowerd in the future or the iPhone is highly overpowerd. But i prefer too much always![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
@galaxyexplorer - you make me laugh but I get you with that last statement. What you really really want is iPad Custom and or iPhone Custom. You heard it here first :-) iPad Custom will cost a lot of dosh but I am sure there will be many takers.........
I'm getting the Air. I like the larger screen. On a related note, I have an iPad 2 for sale. It's in pristine condition. PM me for a great low price. I promise to beat Apple's price by at least 5 bucks.
Quote from article on AppleInsider;
The chip isn't just more powerful however; it's also very efficient, providing the GPU muscle to power a Retina Display resolution without the power demands of the A5X or A6X.
