  • Well even if the RAM is faster (which it may well be), that won't help if there isn't enough of it :)

  • edited October 2013

@DaveMagoo I think the capacity is obviously capped at 1024 MB , but the efficiency of various types of ram will vary. I think the implementation of the type of technology also determines how efficient it will perform. I think the short answer to your question is "yes, it can appear faster as a result of being more efficient", but I'll defer to any hardware experts that say otherwise.

what @richardyot is the real issue...

  • edited October 2013

There seems to be a new 4mb buffer in the A7 that might help things flow faster. But the issue with iOS/iPad is that the speed doesn't matter for things like having more synths/effects open, or apps in general, since apps can only reside in the RAM, unlike your Mac/PC where the ssd/harddrive will be used if needed. So that means if the RAM gets full, iOS will close/crash all the apps it thinks is necessary to close/crash. There's no way for a user (or dev) to measure and foresee when and what apps iOS will close in a reliable way. Which in turn makes it kinda hard to "work around the limitations" as it were..

And the RAM compression Maverick uses doesn't seem to be something that helps that much, if it's also used in iOS. But could be wrong about that

Btw, @AQ808 I don't see anything from the Auria dev about the RAM. All he's said so far from what I can see is that they have to wait like everyone else before they can try out the new hardware and see how it behaves.

  • This is really good news as I have no real reason to upgrade yet ;)

A blessing in disguise I think......looking forward to the early adopters reports.....

  • In the 5s it's now a DDR3 ram before it was a DDR2. So it's faster but........ ;)

  • Can't innovate my ass anymore....

  • So, my conclusion about the RAM issue is:

Unfortunately, we have to admit that we are doing things with the iPad that it was not designed to do.

The iPad was designed as an interface to interact with one app at a time. iOS keeps recent apps loaded in RAM, just for the convenience of having them ready if the user wants to switch. iOS 7 improves ability for apps to sync notifications in the background.

The problem is, essentially I have never heard anything official from Apple about the idea of multi-tasking of apps, as in active use of two apps simultaneously. IAA is the small beginning of this being officially endorsed by Apple. But multi-tasking is precisely what we are doing with Audiobus (for almost a year now), and not just two apps, but 4 or 5 if you have MIDI controlling multiple input slot apps.

Other than us musicians, I don't think there is any other iPad use that demands active multi-tasking of apps, so I can see why Apple would not think it essential to upgrade the RAM yet.

And we probably won't see RAM improvements until the designed use of the iPad demands it.

[I'm no expert, so no hard feelings if I'm way off and need to be corrected]

  • No reason for anyone to have hard feeling over those comments, @Hmtx. That's spot on where we're at right now. I concede that the door is open for an iPad Pro now, but when will that be here? How big will it be? How much will it cost? Will it ever happen? Who knows. Bottom line is that the iPad is going to sell like hotcakes with the amount of ram it has in it right now regardless of how that affects how many synths you can have open simultaneously.

  • edited October 2013

@Hmtx: I agree. Even windows 8 rt allows to use 2 apps on the same screen not just switching (i think the note 3 and some other android devices too). Is it possible with jailbreak?
I like to create very huge and lush soundscapes. So an example of my workflow is: Starting Audiobus, put Alchemy, Sunrizer, Addictive Synth (or whatever) in the input, AUFX: Dub in effect slot (for me the best Stereo Delay on iPhone), AudioReverb in the output (really awesome reverb!)... now i start soundprism pro f.e. to play all together via virtual midi, the ram is still empty yet ;).... but now i could also run this whole Audiobus session into AudioShares IAA + using 3 extra FX apps. Now i'm using 10 apps at the same time.....wait.... crash.... 15 minutes set up gone :( If i could save chains for Audiobus sessions like AudioShare allows for IAA sessions (superb feature!) it would be not so bad :). Doing this in more steps is possible but i never get the same result. Give me ram...and then more ram :D
Indeed.... i still thinking about buying an iPad (mini with retina). I would like to have all the goodies on an iPhone but i'm sure it will never happen :(

  • Samsung, Apple's main tablet competitor just announced a new 12" tablet this morning. I wonder if this ups the pressure for an iPad Pro?

  • Hey Chris, I saw that on the auria forums once or twice. No time to track it down presently.

  • Not sure where the term iPad Pro came from, probably this forum. But Apple has two lines of tablet right now designed for playing Angry Birds on and they can't make enough of them to keep up with demand. I don't really see any incentive for them catering to pro musicians.

Top level speculation! ;) this thread has caused me to think carefully about any impulse to grab the new shiny though. I'm on a iPad 4 and confused.

  • Well I don't want to be annoying but in the 13" iPad thread I actually asked for an iPad Pro about 3 weeks ago. I quote: "...They could probably put a more powerful processor, more RAM and more storage in a thing like that. Actually what I'd like to see is kind of an iPad Pro with larger screen, more horsepower, and also more ports than that single lightning connection. That would be great news..." So it was mentioned here before the news of the air and those articles and it was ME mentioning the term (padding myself on shoulder lightly). I was first ;-)). Although it doesn't take a genius...

This question has come up in this thread, so I thought I would post something I just read about the subject: Why the iPad 2?

    http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/23/4867502/why-would-anyone-buy-an-ipad-2

It appears to be a "space filler" for that particular size--until Apple can get a cheaper replacement in the 9.7" size.

  • This thread is a very interesting one as it shows how some of us are using our music apps. Inefficiently. I can see why some people are having RAM issues; they are running way too many apps at the same time :-) Way too many. If I run 5 instances of BFD in Logic Pro it will crash and my Mac Pro is probably ten times or more powerful that my iPad 4. Therefore this means people have to find the equilibrium number of apps they can run before their iPad or iPhone crashes. This is what I mean about having recording strategies; plan ahead, find workarounds etc. It makes sense or your iDevices will crash and burn. As for the competition, they are just making noises right now. How many people will buy a 20" windows tablet with gazillions of RAMs? And at what price? Watch them iPads and iPad Minis sell like hot loaves.

  • To All: After nearly 200 posts in this thread.... i'm interested now finally if you buy now an iPad Air or not?

  • Tempted by the mini.....high resolution more powerful than ipad 4.....less fatigue when using....hmmm...

  • Not. But I plan on getting the biggest mini when they arrive.

  • I'll be getting the Air. After all of your comments about loving your workflow on your iPhone and not wanting to lug around a big iPad I can see where the mini would be super attractive to you though, @Galaxyexplorer.

  • @FrankieJay, you are right to an extent. If we are using the iPad as a recording studio, I agree we can suck it up and tinker with things till it works, get creative about efficiency, etc.

For me, the joy of iPad music is in live performances. And you can't get around needing to have a drum app, a synth, a recording/ looping output app, and if your iDevice can handle it, put something in the effects slot.

For this use, RAM is simply a critical factor in what we can or can't do. And being forced to close apps during a live performance isn't an option. More RAM would make live performances more fun, with more possibilities.

  • It's just really the soft-and hardware limitations makes me hate (but still love) apple sometimes ;) First rumours of a Galaxy S5 with 64bit and 4gb ram.... are there. I know, rumours but now they have 3 and i'm sure they get 4 in the near future. I wish apple would lost a lot of the "consumers" because of those specs.... because then they would give us what we need :) Sadly we all know that all that is still pretty unusable for music production on Android devices.... i wish just they solve once their issues with all the music things. Android tablet sucks because of the apps but the smartphones are very nice!
@boone51: Let me know how it performs.... perhaps i come to the dark (iPad) side ;)

  • They could make an Android device with 64bit quad core processor and give it 187 gb of ram and it still will have the latency problem that prevents any meaningful music apps ever existing on that ecosystem.

I'll keep you posted. I'm sure excited about it. I've had an iPad 2 since they launched. Drolling over the performance increase charts I've seen. I hope they're right.

Actually I was thinking of getting a new one because I need more storage capacity. But if I'm going to pay top dollar I want one that's future-proof for a couple of years at least, and that requires more than 1GB of RAM I'm sure.

The Air looks gorgeous but I do think Apple will add more memory within the year, so I am not going to buy one now. The Mini will have the same issue of course, and although it's less expensive I think it'll be just too small to play apps like iFretless well.

I might go for a 2nd-hand or refurbished 4 64GB if I come across a really affordable one but will most likely hang on and swap apps and data in and out as needed, keeping my powder dry for the next iteration.

Not likely to buy another brand though, iOS will be where it's at for music apps for a long time yet!

I wonder if Apple also sees us as a tiny minority of their customers. And I would really like to know what the percentage actually is. Also considering money spent on apps. Aren't our apps among the most expensive ones in the store? And aren't many of us appohoholics always wanting to get the latest synth and FX? I do think our segment could be a quite significant one, if not yet, then certainly in the future.

  • 1gb ram = another year to wait for 'it just works' multi app sequencing via cubasis etc....

    The wait just got looooonnnggggeeerrrrrr....

Maybe Rim knew all along that's why there's still no midi in Auria :)

  • I won't be getting the Air. I have enough Apple products already that me getting another one would have to be weighed against the costs and pain of a divorce.

  • edited October 2013

I'm going to go for it, but only because I currently have a 32GB 4th gen and want to get 128GB and prefer new.

Maybe the trolls will tell me I should also work around this limitation!

If the ipad pro comes out, I'll jump to that and leave the "air" line unless I eventually pick up an ipad mini someday for general use.

  • I don't have the money right now to upgrade from my iPad 2, so hopefully next year I will and there will be a 2Gb device ready and waiting for me. :-) Another option is to wait for the iPad Air refurbs to start rolling in and grab one of those at a discounted price.
