Well i dont think there is anything that i really like on iphone side, all good stuff is ipad only. On iphone i would take gadget, grooverider or imaschine. And for something a bit similar than beathawk on ipad, well beatmaker.
Not iOS but Vacuum Pro vst is on sale for a dollar for 48 hours, usual price is $149!

The answer lies within your question :P
Thanks for the heads up. I snagged that deal, and don't even use the PC for making music, but maybe one day...
Also hybrid 3 is on sale for less than a buck
Fugue machine and arpeggionome pro are back on sale at Black Friday prices. Merry Christmas!
Nothing wrong with being the exception that proves the rule
So glad to add hybrid 3 and vacuum pro to my new laptop collection, along with reaktor 6, serum and sylenth .. thanks for the posting link to the former two..incredible deals.
I was close to also dropping a buck on a few of the effect plugins plugin boutique had for sale, but ended up thinking it might be a waste.. would rather not have a ton of plugins I never use once I collect the higher quality ones... also streaming audio into my ipad and applying effects on it (fabfilters, audio dmg, etc ) seems to be working flawlessly for now.
I think I might go for hybrid, I don’t really have many synths on my MacBook. I don’t use that a ton for my “electronic production” (that’s the term I use for music I make when I’m avoiding real work that is not music I would normally listen to...and no one else wants to hear my versions either!). Also, just to be aware, if you have a computer magazine subscription, digital or print, vacuum pro is free this month anyway.
I bought SPL drumxchanger for $19 today on plugin alliance for the rare times I might need it when mixing something, that’s a really good deal. I have drumagog in auria but don’t usually mix live shows there because too much space needed.
Hybrid 3. Couldn't resist.
Hybrid 3 and Vacuum Pro secured.
Really liking Vacuum Pro... randomizer helps.
If you picked up or own Hybrid 3, I noted lots of expansions for it on sale for a buck at Plugin Boutique, as well...
Hybrid 3 and Vacuum Pro secured.
Nice randomizer in Vaccuum Pro.
Scored Hybrid 3 and Vacuum Pro. Sweet. And, Man... we're so spoiled with the installation ease we enjoy with iOS. What a bunch of hassle hoops you have to jump through with these desktop plugins. These both sound really nice though. Thanks for the tip
Sadly... Although I got some other gift cards, I didn't get any iTunes gift cards this year
And, I don't want to buy another $85 one right now. I really want to stop buying apps for a little while and spend more time with the giant stable of apps I already have. Insane really... I've got so many now, I have to remind myself whether I've already bought an app already or not. lol
That being said... I've still got a little credit left and figured I might be about to squeeze a couple more purchases without having to get another card. So, I figured I'd stick with ONLY apps that are on sale at the moment.
If you had to choose between Egoist or Groove Rider... which would be your first choice?
Is there a lot of hassle installing them?
No, just download. Run install. Create account. Wait for activation. Then go to activate, but wouldn't work until I restarted my machine. Then start activation over again. Then need to store activation in iLOk. Then forget what my iLok password is after a half dozen guesses. Then reset iLok password and wait for it to take. Then start over with the activation again. They do sound very good though. Especially for $1 a piece.
Whew! Not quite as easy as hitting the buy button in the appstore.
Grooverider. Its really easy to make good synths and drum sounds with and in general i like its workflow better. Im sure some would choose egoist, but they are quite different to work with. Because grooverider was just released, it will grow more or less from what it is now surely, egoist wont likely get any major updates in long time if ever.
I like mangling weird stuff though. Seems Groove Rider is really more for those making "groovy" ditties from the included samples and not so much for messing with your imported stuff to mangle up beyond recognition into insane weirdness. Or, can you do that in GR too?
Others say GR is good as a "sketch pad" for song ideas. I don't make songs, nor do I really have much interest in making songs so much... especially not "groovy" ones.
nice, thank you!
I don’t own gr since I don’t really need another iaa modern groovebox for now.
Egoist is also a little groove box. But its sequenced slicer and fx can get you pretty far. Mind that egoist is meant to be used in stacks of 16/16ths bars
You can mangle your samples with either app. I think Groove Rider has more potential for being spontaneous. Egoist has several options for generating random parameters.
You can create some base pattern or load the pads up with samples and then start tweaking a bunch of knobs to play it. There’s really not many options for live performance with Egoist other than hitting randomization of parameters or changing slice points in your sample. In Groove Rider you can work with a lot more samples whereas in each Egoist project you’re working with one sample.
Once MIDI control is added to Groove Rider, I think it will work great with sequencers or 16 pad controllers.
I’m still having trouble working up enthusiasm for GR but your description has me more intrigued. Thanks. It’s likely that I just don’t “get” it yet.
Would you say there’s much crossover between Egoist, ReSlice & Sector? Or, applying automated effects to your sliced up samples assigned to pads in BM3 with some beats added?
They have different degrees of time needed to produce results. I think ReSlice is the easiest one to start with especially if you’re not going after traditional musical sounds. If you don’t want musical beats, just turn off the arp. You can run multiple instances through various effects as well and it now has access to its AU parameters so you can automate them via MIDI. Sector will always create rhythmic sounds.
Learning more about subtractive synthesis would be a way for you to be able to have a better grasp on what apps can do by looking through their GUI and manuals. GR has a multitude of filters, envelopes, pitch shifter, resonance, oscillators, and ways to automate them similar to BM3 without all of the overhead. These tools in GR or BM3 can be used to apply a wide range of transformations to the samples you start out with.
If you haven’t already looked into Moebius Lab you should as it seems more suited to producing weird sounds.
Here’s an Electribe 2 tutorial for producing a helicopter sound and a similar process can be done with Groove Rider.

I’ve got Moebius and am a fan. Have had it since launch. I’ve also got a cursory understanding of subtractive synthesis. I’m just trying to make a quick decision on this one while it’s on launch sale. At $10 it seems like a great value even if I’m only getting use of parts of the app. At full price, I don’t think it’d be for me. Or rather, I think I already have a lot of redundancy of parts in other apps. Though, I do like how most of GR is on one screen.
I’m curious how the automation works. Several say they love how the automation is handled in GR, but I’ve not been able to get an answer to how it’s done. Though, I see the dev just posted a link to a manual today, so maybe I’ll have a quick look to see if I can find answers to some of these questions from there.
I’m just a bit leery of the GR hype because many of the most enthusiastic cheerleaders are also saying specific features are coming with a level of knowledge that implies many of them may be beta testers who want to see the app do well out of the gate.
I do think I’d get at least $10 of good value from this. It’s file size isn’t too big, and it’s universal. A lot of potential good value that’s hard to pass up, even if the style of the preset samples doesn’t appeal to me much. I also haven’t been wild about many of the demos yet either, but I hear hints of stuff I think I could get good use from. Looks kinda fun too.
Thanks for the detailed feedback!
@skiphunt I was also trying to compare between GR and Egoist. In the end I figured I could do more interesting things with ReSlice and a sequencer. The bass and beats part of Egoist looks kinda weak. GR looks way better for the synth sequencing and sounds, but I am not too clear on the sampling/slicing part. People have been talking it up to be cool, but I can't tell what is going on in the demos so much as regards to what sounds are coming from where, synth or sampler.
I decided to pass on Egoist, but am still trying to decide on GR. It looks like a lot of fun, but I am not much of a groovebox fan. More from lack of experience with them rather than just not liking them. But GR just sounds like a good buy. Poison 202 is awesome and everyone is claiming to have a blast playing with it, I am probably going to take them plunge tomorrow. I am sure I could get my $10 worth of fun out of it even if it doesn't fit in with my usual workflows.
Big thanks for this one!
Ended up buying both.
I like Egoist. I found the interface easy to figure out quickly and I think I understand 75% of it in just the first 15mins of playing with it. I haven’t imported my own samples in yet, but everything looks pretty clear.
Groove Rider so far has been painfully NOT intuitive. The manual is very basic, and I think much is assumed that users are already familiar with other groovebox interfaces like Electribe. I am not. I can’t even figure out something as simple as naming a freaking part!
I watched Doug’s video and did not find it helpful in the slightest. I won’t go into why, but I’ll be looking for a proper tutorial as soon as I can find one.
After a half hour I did manage at least to figure out the sequencer and shape some sounds with effects. I think I’ll definitely get my $10 out of it, but learning the interface without prior knowledge of the hardware it reportedly emulates is proving to be extremely frustrating so far.
That said... I don’t think it’s nearly as complicated to use as has been my experience so far. It’s just a matter of familiarizing myself with it’s particular syntax, coming from a complete lack of prior experience with Groove-boxes in general. Though, I can’t say the basic functions like naming and erasing have been intuitive at all. Giving up for tonight and will try again fresh mañana.
