@skiphunt I was also trying to compare between GR and Egoist. In the end I figured I could do more interesting things with ReSlice and a sequencer. The bass and beats part of Egoist looks kinda weak. GR looks way better for the synth sequencing and sounds, but I am not too clear on the sampling/slicing part. People have been talking it up to be cool, but I can't tell what is going on in the demos so much as regards to what sounds are coming from where, synth or sampler.

I decided to pass on Egoist, but am still trying to decide on GR. It looks like a lot of fun, but I am not much of a groovebox fan. More from lack of experience with them rather than just not liking them. But GR just sounds like a good buy. Poison 202 is awesome and everyone is claiming to have a blast playing with it, I am probably going to take them plunge tomorrow. I am sure I could get my $10 worth of fun out of it even if it doesn't fit in with my usual workflows.

    Ended up buying both. ;)

I like Egoist. I found the interface easy to figure out quickly and I think I understand 75% of it in just the first 15mins of playing with it. I haven’t imported my own samples in yet, but everything looks pretty clear.

Groove Rider so far has been painfully NOT intuitive. The manual is very basic, and I think much is assumed that users are already familiar with other groovebox interfaces like Electribe. I am not. I can’t even figure out something as simple as naming a freaking part!

I watched Doug’s video and did not find it helpful in the slightest. I won’t go into why, but I’ll be looking for a proper tutorial as soon as I can find one.

After a half hour I did manage at least to figure out the sequencer and shape some sounds with effects. I think I’ll definitely get my $10 out of it, but learning the interface without prior knowledge of the hardware it reportedly emulates is proving to be extremely frustrating so far.

That said... I don’t think it’s nearly as complicated to use as has been my experience so far. It’s just a matter of familiarizing myself with it’s particular syntax, coming from a complete lack of prior experience with Groove-boxes in general. Though, I can’t say the basic functions like naming and erasing have been intuitive at all. Giving up for tonight and will try again fresh mañana.

Agree it’s not that easy to pick up everything straightaway with GR but it’s definitely very playable when you get the workflow. Egoist is a classic for sure and is also great live as you can use the keyboard in slice mode to play the different slices, or you can use it with external sequencers. Also has AB3 midi out for the bass which is fun and useful.

I’ve been looking through the preset patterns and apart from the obvious sampled sounds like piano’s, guitars, stabs and the odd breakbeat sample it’s all the synth. It’s actually quite capable but there are no presets so you have to start with your waveform and build the sound from it. There’s also an interesting pattern called looped kick which creates a lead sound from modifying a small section of the kick sample like a single cycle waveform. Clever stuff and lots of possibilities here.

I don't really want to disparage Doug's videos. He's obviously got a lot of fans here. It's just the going though the presets thing doesn't really do it for me. The ability to translate an interface so that it's understandable to new users is a tricky and rare skill all by itself. There are a couple other video makers who are able to take an app, briefly tell me what the app is for. Distill the most important functions down and present them in a way that makes sense to those uninitiated, and manage do it all in a relatively short period of time.

The Pants of Death guy's videos work for me like this. After watching a roughly 10min PoD video, I know what the app is for, what it sounds like, how the foundational features and functions work, and what a few presets sound like. At the end of his videos, I know if the app is for me, how difficult it'll be to learn, and I'll know the basics in order to hit the ground running if I decide to buy the app. But, that's just me. Different strokes.

I DID think that Doug's video for the Senode app was the best out there. I liked the Pant's of Death video for Senode too, but Doug did a great job of completely going through that app in a way that left no questions at all. I think he gets in a hurry to publish videos quickly and doesn't get a chance to actually learn the app first. If he'd use his excellent Senode tutorial video as a model for his videos in general, and less of the preset-only approach, he'd gain another fan. :)

I'm finding iOS11 screen recording is a bit flaky still. Some video/motion apps totally freak out by the odd, non-standard size the screen recording saves. I'm curious if loading up a screen recording into an editor like Lumafusion, then resaving the screen recording as a standard video resolution might alleviate some of the weirdness.

Thank you very much :) I'm glad people are still getting some use out of 76— the code for that is so old by this point that it might even benefit from a complete re-write (I would need all-new graphics for it though). Cheers!

Sadly... Although I got some other gift cards, I didn't get any iTunes gift cards this year :( And, I don't want to buy another $85 one right now. I really want to stop buying apps for a little why and spend more time with the giant stable of apps I already have. Insane really... I've got so many now, I have to remind myself whether I've already bought an app already or not. lol ;)

That being said... I've still got a little credit left and figured I might be about to squeeze a couple more purchases without having to get another card right now. So, I figured I'd stick with ONLY apps that are on sale right now.

If you had to choose between Egoist or Groove Rider... which would be your first choice?

Grooverider. Its really easy to make good synths and drum sounds with and in general i like its workflow better. Im sure some would choose egoist, but they are quite different to work with. Because grooverider was just released, it will grow more or less from what it is now surely, egoist wont likely get any major updates in long time if ever.

I like mangling weird stuff though. Seems Groove Rider is really more for those making "groovy" ditties from the included samples and not so much for messing with your imported stuff to mangle up beyond recognition into insane weirdness. Or, can you do that in GR too?

Others say GR is good as a "sketch pad" for song ideas. I don't make songs, nor do I really have much interest in making songs so much... especially not "groovy" ones. ;)

You can mangle your samples with either app. I think Groove Rider has more potential for being spontaneous. Egoist has several options for generating random parameters.

You can create some base pattern or load the pads up with samples and then start tweaking a bunch of knobs to play it. There’s really not many options for live performance with Egoist other than hitting randomization of parameters or changing slice points in your sample. In Groove Rider you can work with a lot more samples whereas in each Egoist project you’re working with one sample.

Once MIDI control is added to Groove Rider, I think it will work great with sequencers or 16 pad controllers.

I’m still having trouble working up enthusiasm for GR but your description has me more intrigued. Thanks. It’s likely that I just don’t “get” it yet.

Would you say there’s much crossover between Egoist, ReSlice & Sector? Or, applying automated effects to your sliced up samples assigned to pads in BM3 with some beats added?

I skipped all the posts after this. If you’re still deciding between Groove Rider and Egoist, go Egoist. I’ve used it before but never owned it til yesterday. It’s opened up my appreciation for sampling, and its ability to wring new melodies out of an already melodic sample.
