  • It’s amazing how many times you have to scroll to find BeatMaker 3 if you put BeatMaker into the AppStore search box!

Or it’s possible that this is a preemptive strike at scuttling the launch of propellerheads Reason for ios (or whatever big new app). “Don’t buy that, this one is free!”

Ah yes, the ‘cut your nose to spite your face’ school of business ;)

BM3 has been heading somewhere really good, just taking a while. Once it gets there they wouldn’t have any need to give it away. Patience....I’d say this namm move made sense if they needed a cash injection, but how much are they going to make from selling a few extra sample packs? Probably less than the sales they just lost to people that were planning to soon buy it and now just grabbed it for free? 4 of my friends fall in that category....and probably way more that I just haven’t spoke to about it.
    All guesswork though...

  • Maybe it's just wishful thinking :)
But I can totally see the usefulness of a proper iPhone sampler - supposed to be around the corner without any alternative - the material later can be reshaped on iPad, or on desktop as DAW or VST/AU inside your favorite DAW.
I can't think of anything that offers this atm, and INTUA is the closest in development.
I wish them luck to get there.

Another reason for no iReason, let's face iOS music development is dying, to die.

  • @mathieugarcia I’m cheering you on, man! Go get ‘em at NAMM and do your thing. You have created a groundbreaking production tool with a tonne of potential. Do what you need to do to make it happen.

  • Personally I’m of the opinion that “giving away” a high cost app such as BM3 devalues the brand and will encourage people who miss out to wait until the next time it is free rather than encourage future sales.
Plus anyone who has hestitated on paying the “real” price will be unlikely to spend money on sample packs even in the app itself was free.

  • Oh and I I could be wrong bunt I think it’s probably too early for this to be a response to iOS Reason as I imagine that will take a much longer time to arrive, however it may be more likely trying to preempt the arrival of a souped up Modstep(2) !

Pity the sample packs aren't free as well. :(

    You’re joking, right?

Well, they could of been free for those two days BM3 is free.

Again, are you seriously kidding? You’re getting a $24.99 app for free. Do you seriously expect Mathieu to entirely eliminate any means of income for four days straight?

I actually bought the app when it first came out. Naturally, I am going to be pissed off if it's free now but atleast for the people like myself who bought the app the dev could of given us the sample packs for free for those two days BM3 is free.

    OMG. !!!!!!!

  • This is unexpected, brave, generous and there are probably a few disgruntled customers out there, I haven't read past page 1. On the other hand people that already have a few DAW setups on iOS are going to give BM3 a chance now. I fall into that category.

Looking at the bigger picture, more users means the app is less likely to be abandoned and will likely receive more frequent updates. If I enjoy using BM3 I will buy some packs as a thank you, I have lots of blocs Wave soundpacks from the days when it was updated regularly with new features. New update, I bought a new pack, lately I have been browsing them and some are very good. It seems that an app will sell most just after release, with a handful of sales after that. Surprised me to learn that but I was also surprised that launchpad had 7 million downloads and probably brings in a decent amount of IAP sales for Novation.

On behalf of those still recovering from the financial strain of the festive season I want to thank Intua for this gift.

    I really feel cheated.
I do not see any marketing connection between the BM3 IOS and the desktop (hypothetically). This is a different community. BM3 does not offer anything to users of desktop DAW. BM3 is inferior in everything against Cubase, Reason, Logic or StudioOne, for example. As a desktop sampler it's worse than Kontakt or SampleTank.
Conclusion: this is a disgraceful but unsuccessful attempt to attract new customers due to loyal users, who are also paid betatester. Shame.

It's not like the app you've paid for didn't cost any blood, sweat and tears to make.

If you come from an egocentric perspective you might sell it to yourself as supporting platform (30% to Apple) and the developer (intua) to continue developing mobile music software that (i assume) you like(d until this point).

  • This scares me ;)

I am wondering if there would be less backlash if the price dropped to 99 cents for a few days. Pretty sure Moog did that with Animoog and while I missed out on that one, I dont remember anyone complaining.

Eventide and some others have given vst freebies that usually cost over $200 and that seems to have greatly expanded their user base in a saturated market with little to no user complaints.

I'm sorry, but you do not know anything about me. Unfortunately not everyone lives in Western Europe or the USA. The money I paid for BM3, in terms of my country are quite large. I should not be selfish with my family, friends. I can be a volunteer for the wounded at the front or the poor in the Church. But I see no reason to be a philanthropist for INTUA and especially for Apple.

  • I paid full price for the app and I don’t regret it. It becoming free for a few days doesn’t upset me either. Maybe because I’m looking at it as a window for people to see the potential in iOS music production. I can see why some people would be upset but sales happen all the time on things you may have purchased before. It’s not that big of a deal. I can now pass this along to my friends who don’t use their iPad for music and wouldn’t spend a dime on an “app” and show them why I’ve been talking about this app for the past 6 months.

I don’t know but only for what you write. Consider however that Intua has to pay bills (and taxes) wherever they are based . If you just spend a minute thinking from their perspective you might just understand that it is a bit more complicated that your personal circumstances and what YOU feel.

Whatever is happening to you personally, don’t let that discourage you from seeing good in others. We are all victims of a globalisation (whatever that means these days).

Edit: how does paying someone for making something you use make you a philanthropist? I thought philanthropy (in a virtuous sense) was based on generosity and not personal interest.

  • Well said man. I bought intro price and I’m so glad I did. So happy for a the dudes that can jump in for free. A blessing is a blessing.

I just hope ain’t Us doesn’t go subscription model. But then again who knows.

Erm, so then intua had actually ZERO chance of making any money? Jeez...

I'm not even going to argue with you. It was just a thought.

Jeez...It's right what a guy I was chatting to in my local music store was saying about music forums being the worst for disagreements and arguments.

Creative people have creative opinions. Keeps it interesting.

The internet is overflowing with endless, high quality free samples / sample packs. Find them, make your own. Let a gift be a gift.

I don't think so. Its a pro users market. They know what they want and pay for it. The alternative is subscription model. I remember a review I got, when I set one of my old app for free: "The worst game ever". This says everything.

Sunrizer 2 au? Fan of sunrizer and would love AU version. Actually recently asked if it was coming as an IAP. Would pay for sure. Will v2 be backwards compatible with sunrizer 1 patches? Some patches I made years ago during a failed 'I'll check out ios' spell that I'd love to have as AU...

I’d rather pay pro prices once than be saddled with subscriptions left and right that offer no extra services/loyal subscriber perks/nor are the excellent rent-to-own model Splice invented for plugins like Ozone 8 and Serum.

I’m willing to pay in the range of $19.99-$39.99 for a Sunrizer 2 AU in other words. Korg sells IAPs and their synths that function in Gadget at such prices, and I paid those prices. A lot of us here would be glad to pay that for a Sunrizer 2 synth. :)

  • Intua could have dropped promo codes from an helicopter over Anaheim for those who attend to NAMM, which is a pretty common practice at fairs giving out your product. They found more convenient to just set it free for a few days. No big deal.

Thanks. Actually I work on a DAW. Sunrizer AU is coming this year (Q2).
btw, I don't want to steal this thread :)

I'd pay £20 for sunrizer 2 or sunrizer AU IAP. no problem, just for added AU functionality. Anything more expensive than that and it would have to have some very appealing added stuff over the version I already have otherwise I'd probably just throw the money at something that I didn't mostly pay for once already..

  • Sweet! The more the merrier. I am happy for those who get in on it and find true love ❤️ as I have.
