  • I wouldn't quite call the uneven iPads lemons, but like many high-tech companies, including Intel and MS, Apple seems to be following a tick-tock strategy.

Although the Air does not feel like a minor upgrade, they crippled it, perhaps unintentionally, by failing to upgrade RAM along with the CPU and 64-bit system.

Even if you regard the iPad as a media consumption gadget rather than a production tool, having it fail while browsing content-intensive forum threads is a serious shortcoming.

    iPad 1 Lemon

Yeah - it was a real failure. How will Apple ever live it down. Oh, the shame! :-)

    Not talking sales though. :)

Oh.... Oh... I'll have to put my iPad one down then... Maybe it'll stop running iMS-20 and Cubasis via Audiobus for me soon or Magellan or Sunrizer or Addictive or Alchemy or Animoog or Arctic Keys or Arctic Prosynth or iSEM or Cassini or Cube Synth or DM1 or Echo Pad or Audio mastering or ...

Oh, wait, it still works. Odd - no smell of burning lemons either ;-)

    nor my 3

    nor my original mini.

Odd that. They all still work. Maybe it's just me!

Of course better hardware, more can be done, but lemons? That would be bitter and this ain't! :-)

  • I was taking to a guy from RadioShack about the next generation of ipads. He thinks they will be coming out with a quadcore next. I think I am going to hold onto my mini until I see what comes next. If nothing else the air will get a price reduction.

  • Hey now, I'm only stating sober facts about Apples complete inability to balance specs properly in their iDevices. No need to turn anything into a pointless discussion here, :)

  • Something weird is going on with Safari for sure. It crashed twice for me right now just trying to read this page of the thread. And that's on IPad4 (in case that matters).

  • Hey guys, I don't know if I'm doing anything wrong, but Gadget (latest update) is not showing in AudioBus...
I'm on iPad air with the latest iOS 7.06.
    Please help...

  • Are you looking in the input slot?

  • Not to go far off topic here, but regarding the Air and it's need for more RAM... I wonder if a petition could get enough force to sway Apple into offering an upgrade program for them, maybe pay $100 to double the RAM?

@ChrisG - you know what they say, ... ;-) if Apple gives you Lemons (wait there's a joke in there somewhere) - make .....

    Music... :-D

(and don't forget! You can still take Lemons on the 'bus ;-) )

    No I'm not..
Btw; Problem solved by deleting Gadget and re-installing :)

  • Anyone have any info about how this runs on an ipad 2? I don't feel like sifting through 19 pages to see if this has been established already :P Almost prepared to pull the trigger, but this obviously I want to make sure it's going to be useable. I'm still not sure it's something that I'll get much use out of anyway... I'm torn...

  • Runs well on my ipad2, as long as I start freezing tracks after 6 tracks.

Thank you! Decided to pull the trigger. Time will tell if that's a good decision I guess :P

    LOL! Facts..?

Calling something a lemon is not stating a "fact", it is an opinion. Your opinions, or mine, are not facts. They are just opinions.

Something's telling me you enjoy a bit of headbutting here and there lol. In this case I have to say I totally agree with you though ;)

  • @Kloon love that one! Sale/download? ;)

@ChrisG: iPad3 was clearly a lemon because the hardware couldn't keep up with the retina display. This is/was visible in day to day use by common users. iPad5 is just underspecced when it comes to memory, a problem only for music users I think. Most apps run one at a time and have enough RAM, most users won't notice.

Safari is just buggy, that's why it crashes. :) The OS itself is buggy... I don't think people realise what a huge security screwup Apple did recently. Basically for one year, all supposedly secure websites and apps like email, ebanking and so on had zero security, anyone on a public wifi could listen in.

Naw, it really isn't an "opinion". The specs are there, in black and white. We're not talking about a book or a movie here. But a gimped and under-specced $800-900 device, that is giving people everywhere headaches an masse. Wether it be for productive applications or day to day lite usage . It's probably giving the engineers looking at the vast amount of crash logs flooding in at Apple the most headache tho.

  • @raz: Thanks! :)

  • Hey, Morris, you start freezing tracks after 6 tracks? I thought gadget was limited to 5 tracks on the ipad 2. How did you get round that? Love this app, btw...this is the DAW I was waiting for. Once we get it in the output slot with an audio gadget I'll be very happy.

It isn't a hard and fast limit, it depends on which gadgets you use (some are clearly more processor intensive than others) and how busy they are. You could for example use 8 tracks in a song provided no more than 4-5 are used at once. And that's without track freezing, which takes it up higher.

To me ipad air was a positive move from ipad 4. Yes it could have had 2GB ram but it is still faster and lighter then its predecessor. I don't know what country sells iPads for £800, that's clearly overpriced. I sold my gen 4, added £50 and I'm loving the few improvements including not having to continuously clear background apps. No complains here. The last software update seems to be a lemon for some but that's another story.

  • Strange that we disparage something by calling it a lemon. I like lemons. They're good for you...

i agree with you although the RAM issue is really annoying on latest devices.I (like anybody else) hope they improve it with 7.1.Anyway,i dont stick with ipads forever.Usually i keep an ipad just for a little more than a year and then sell it to get a new one. So,i'm pretty sure the mini Retina will keep me happy for the next year and then i gotta move on to the latest and hippest shit :)

  • FWIW my ipad 3 hasn't crashed once on this thread :)

I'm not sure lemon is a fair description although the specs were probably not totally well thought out. It mostly get the job done for me and is an amazing improvement over my iPad from five years ago!
