Is this possible...yet? I would like to have Rozeta drive Audiolayer and record Rozeta’s output to the midi timeline. I’ve spent an hour or more on this and I get sound but no midi recorded. Thanks.

Definitely possible. I had no problems whatever with it - worked first time.

Oh wait! The secret is you have to tap the MIDI settings at the top of the track and disable "Pre MIDI FX". Many thanks to whoever it was that pointed that out earlier! (can't find the post right now).

I've been testing ZenBeats with GeoShred and EG Pulse as MIDI FX.

At first I couldn't get it to work but have figured it out now - it works differently to Cubasis/GarageBand but it works!

To play and record GeoShred you need to go through the following steps

    (1) Add Instrument Track
    (2) Add Geoshred AU Instrument
    (3) Hold on the GeoShred AU in the Plugins list and Tap Add MIDI Effect
    (4) Select either of the two (not sure why there are two?) GeoShred MIDI FX that appear in the list
    (5) Click on Midi and turn off Pre MIDI FX as per the above screenshot from wim
    (6) Open up the MIDI FX version of Geoshred you've just Added (shows up as Yellow) on my theme (Midnight)
    (7) Arm The Track and press Record
    (8) Play GeoShred so badly that Jordan Ruddess would wish he'd never invented it if he could hear you
    (9) Press STOP and loook at the track!

If you've followed all the steps above you should see that GeoShred has been recorded, complete with Automation for Pitch Bends etc

The same approach also works with EG Pulse (and presumably any AUs which are both sound sources and playable instruments). Load the AU Instrument first and use your preferred drum kit as a sound source. Add the MIDI FX and play the Drum Pads on that instance to record the AU Instrument Drums to the track.

When you think about it, it actually makes sense. You need to add the Audio Source (Instrument) and the MIDI effects separately because they're different. Cubasis and GarageBand somehow do this AutoMagically in a single step but in some ways I prefer ZenBeats approach because it allows you to configure one GeoShred Preset as an optimal playing surface (just to use as a MIDI FX) which you can then use to play all your other GeoShred presets (treating them just as AU sound sources) which avoids the need to adjust the playing grid for each of them individually. It also means you could use Velocity KB to play GeoShred instead if you prefer...

    Generous tut.

  • Loopbuilder vs Timeline:

I'm trying to come to terms with these two views. Is there a general theory that unifies them? Or are they two completely separate workflows?

Can projects jump between the two views? In what ways?

In my experience, I usually switch views accidentally, by clicking on the wrong icon. And then I wonder why there's no sound when I hit the play button, and whether I should read the manual...

    Any insight would be appreciated.

Some people prefer loop building as a quick approach to fleshing out how to create or arrange a song. Or, to perform live.

You get to mix and match patterns to hear what different song parts and transitions sound like. When you have that idea together, tap record and record to timeline or...stay in clip launch view to perform live or jam out.

The advantage of timeline for me comes when adding vocal parts or for mixing/mastering once the song is finished.

I'm an amateur, but I like how Maschine 3 does it....loops/clips as ideas and then when you're ready, commit to the linear world very easily....

Both views available in same project. They’re complementary. You can record a performance in loop view, turning loops on and off, and then edit it afterwards on timeline.

Yep. That’s the idea. Ableton and Maschine are definitely the most popular by far. Zenbeats is definitely the standard on iOS for clip/arrangement view. Logic 10.5 just turnt the heat up considerably with its new workflow and instruments.

I love it. We the consumers are the ultimate winners. Looking forward to seeing how Zenbeats evolves and responds to the competition. So far so good.

I was among, if not the first advocate on this forum for it back when it was called Stagelight. I think that thread is around here somewhere to show how far it’s come and how much @MatthewAtZenbeats and the devs have listened to users here to improve it.

Sampleverse is truly one of a kind and very underrated and under discussed round these parts if you ask me.

Well, it is certainly your enthusiasm along with @anickt that has me going through the lessons :)

Definitely time well spent 👌🏽. So many things hidden and nestled away under long presses and drop downs plus, one of the devs hinted to some Ui and theme tweaks coming soon.

Yeah like long-pressing the Roland logo will take you back to the 80s....🤓

Sampleverse is pretty amazing. You can build your own instrument out of up to three samples plus three synth oscillators, plus some very flexible modulators. I can’t wait until programmers more talented than I am start putting out presets for it.

In yesterday’s class @MatthewAtZenbeats was creating custom waveforms in the oscillators and LFO’s and it got absolutely nasty even before he added filters. When you first look at it it seems kind of strange but once you get to know it - wow!

It also does pitch detection when you record from external sources and for imported files and gets some pretty clean loops with the tap of a button. It’s not always 100% but it’s pretty darn good!

I can seriously see them adding that in an update. Long press logo and Zen snaps/records your selfie as you use it and applies retro filters turning you into an 80s version of yourself or other popular artists mashups for you to post to your socials. Pretty simple to do really.

You heard it here first @MatthewAtZenbeats 😂

  • Would love seeing some hardware support integration like launchpad series

  • I have to say, Zenbeats has grown on me over the last couple of days of playing with it. It still crashes for some unknown reason, but beyond that it's becoming ever more professional and useful. I can see this overtaking AUM as my favourite 'DAW'. It just needs that bit more stability. The drum machine is sensational - I think it's fantastic and will be buying some packs. There's just one thing I can't do at the moment: record the midi from Pure Acid. Has anyone managed to do this yet?

Do you have the most recent version? Not had any crashes except in previous version with AU scanning.

Recording MIDI with an app that has a built in sequencer is a little awkward because (I think) ZB is really looking for something like Rozeta Bassline driving a separate instrument. But it can be done and works great ultimately. I think somebody explained it in another thread. I’ll get back to you.

I really need to start digging into Sampleverse. I'm using it on a track but just with presets. I'm in the advanced class today so maybe I'll learn some tricks there. But definitely need to try bringing in some other samples and building from scratch

OK so - Pure Acid does not show up as a MIDI effect so you can’t record within ZB. I was able to do it with Ruismaker Noir and I thought it worked the same. But you can export Pure Acid MIDI from the standalone and import into ZB. Then just turn off the sequencer in PA. Honestly, I wouldn’t use the drums in PA inside of ZB. ZB drum machine is easier and better.

  • Was just informed that Roland Cloud now has Lifetime keys as an alternative to their subscription model..

Thank you again. I’ll stick with ZB for now because I’m getting into the workflow. It’s improved massively, I see.

Lot of global improvement since last time I used it many months ago. Lot of little bugs fixed. But mixdown still leads to saturated/distorted sound. Only used ADverb2 and DRC as AU’s, other is internal stuff. Real-time export and other buffers settings don’t help. Still unreliable :'( @MatthewAtZenbeats

EDIT: Freezing DRC track before global export helped making perfect mixdown, cool!!!

  • Seems kind of quiet.

Discord group has active Roland presence. I’m not a big user of those types of forums but it was worth getting the Discord app for this one.

Finally got new iPad and searching for DAW to paior with AUM. Zenbeats seems great candidate but appstore says "it's not avaiable in your country". Has anyone else come across this? Is it still in some kind of beta stage?
    P.S. I'm from Ukraine.

I spent the weekend reading through this thread and the Zenbeats bug thread. Also watched several videos about ZB. Last night I plugged my iPad into my little studio setup and played around with what my new found knowledge taught me. My Akia MPK261 seemed to play nicely with ZB although I haven’t tried tweaking knobs with it yet. My Focusrite Solo (2nd gen) was recognized by ZB. I created two audio tracks, left or 1 was my mic and right or 2 was my guitar with a Nembrini amp in the effects slot. The lights on the Solo lit up so I know I was getting signal, but I never could get any sound from either channel to play through ZB. Monitor was on, record was armed, but nothing. iPad Pro 2nd gen, 13.2.2 ios. I’m pretty sure I’m missing something basic as I have seen no reports of anyone having problems with their audio interface.

Thank you in advance for any assistance.
