Whenever I’ve needed a sample editor beyond the simple trim and conversions of AudioShare, I’ve always reached for Twisted Waves. Now that it’s been a little while, I’m curious if there are many former Twisted Wave users who Yes! now swear by Auditor, or no, ‘cuz they’re too different of tools, or no because there’s a lot of feature overlap and already comfy in Twisted Waves. Any feedback appreciated

I use Auditor for most of what I used Twisted Wave fir and for some things you can’t do at all in Twisted Wave. Twisted Wave doesn’t have layers or regions or non-destructive rearranging of a file or tempo-based editing or batch conversions or reconstituting slices into a single file.

Thank you, @espiegel123! I may just need to give Auditor another longing gaze - perhaps more. TW is still solid, but the grass does sound a little greener ...

How do you chop up drum loops with this?

Like I have a drum loop and I added slices to all the parts I want
Can you not export them as individual files?

It seems to only export a single file?
Do I have to move each slice to it’s own layer?

Or can you not do that?

It looks like exporting all regions from Auditor as individual files is something coming soon.

Would it be possible for Auditor to batch process folders? Thus creating target folders as well? This would help a ton! @LivingMemorySoftware

Obviously I don’t mean in this specific case but I had about a hundred of these zip files from the Endlesss beta that I wanted to convert. Would be slow going one folder at a time.

(PS. I would also love actions for x2 and /2 speed that just does simple linear interpolation of the file length.)

Nice, this is looking like a real good app. If I could do all my loop chopping in it as well would be awesome all around audio editor for me.
    Looking forward to updates.

Or maybe even a ‘no interpolation’(ie. Just repeat or drop a sample) for that old-school sound :)
(This is the way the Amiga did it when changing the octave in Audiomaster 4 and PT2.3).

  • @LivingMemorySoftware - what do you think of an enhanced normalize process where normalization could be done to a predetermined rms value with a condition that the peak dbfs value may not exceed a predetermined limit?

Also looking forward to features like chopping and exporting of regions!

I recommend contacting them via their web site. Andy checks email with reasonable frequency but (like most devs) checks here only sporadically.

  • I think people are gonna like the next update... This app is coming along VERY nicely.

  • Version 1.0.34 is out:

    • New feature: Timeline markers.
    • New Action: Add/Delete Marker at playhead position.
    • New Action: Split at Markers, splits selected regions at marker locations.

    • New Action: Split / 2, splits selected regions by half region length.
    • New: Options to export selected regions as audio files.
    • WAV: Import/export markers in WAV file.
    • AIFF: Import/export markers in AIFF files.
    • When saving multiple regions as WAV or AIF, meta data contains incremental MIDI note range and key span.
    • New option in Settings to import transient locations from AIFF Apple Loops as markers.
    • New: “More…” button in Action Bar. Presents all available actions not currently in the bar.
    • New in Info Bar: Added a button to hide overview panel.
    • New in Info Bar: Added a button to scroll during playback.
    • New in Info Bar: Fixed Selection Length. (Enabled with padlock button).
    • Changed: Popup Action Menu no longer displays actions that are in the main action bar.
    • Changed default Transport buttons in Transport Bar:
    • … Locate to Previous: (was called Locate to Zero) now locates to the previous snap location if single tapped, zero if double tapped.
    • … Locate to Next: New button to locate to the next snap location if single tapped, or session end if double tapped.
    • … (Long press on any transport button to reset/customise the bar for the new changes)
    • Long press in region dragger no longer deselects the region under it.
    • Region name labels easier to tap on.
    • Layer mute and solo states are now saved in project files.
    • BPM can now be entered as an expression. i.e 73 x 2
    • Light Theme: Increased waveform visibility for muted layers.
    • Fixed: Potential crash after undoing region drag.
    • Fixed : Error when re-loading a project saved immediately after a join action.
    • Fixed: Text expressions containing decimal fractions would fail. ( eg: 1234 * 0.75 is now possible)
    • Fixed: A circumstance where Join was not possible.
    • Fixed: A circumstance where Split was not possible.
    • Fixed: Split action button is properly disabled when it’s not available.
    • Various minor UI style improvements.
    • Updated help and manual.
  • For anyone who chops and processes samples and/or loop files: with this update, this app went from very good to essential. It has already saved me so much time during the beta period. Amazing!

    Pretty epic.

  • Being able to “chop and export” just made this 100X more productive and useful for me. Amazing!

Love to hear more about this? Would be Incredible to have an associated midi file like Recycle does.

really? i’m always interested to see how people use the kind of tools . what kind of sample manipulation do you use it for mostly?
do you record long audio files i
port them in to the app and chop loops or samples out of it?
or do you do any other processes that are interesting?
i’d love to hear about it

  • Cool!

@LivingMemorySoftware Curious... Synthscaper can use loop point markers. I tried this out at some point using Logic Pro to put in the loop points. Are the markers saved in Auditor the same thing as “loop points”?

From Synthscaper manual: “ - For WAV samples which contain loop points, after mark "L:" shows time offset for start point and length of the loop in seconds.”

Generally, if you want a reply back, contacting Andy via email (via their web site) is the best way. He visits here only occasionally, and is good about responding to email in a timely fashion.

I could be wrong, but I think generic markers are different from loop points. I think (but am not certain) that Auditor’s loop tools set loop points that some other apps can read. I could be wrong about that. So, best to get confirmation from Andy (@LivingMemorySoftware)

My workflow may be a little idiosyncratic in that I prefer to do live jams and capture the magical moments and then create random samples and loops for my "projects". I have grown quite tired of the sterile and predictable MIDI sequencing to the grid. It takes all the humanization out of music. So, yes, I run lots of live jams and experiments and then chop, normalize, etc the samples to play them. In a given session I probably chop and process 30-50 files. I used to use Audioshare, which is a great utility for a handful of files at a time. AudItor is way more efficient for my use case, even just for batch processing the normalization and trimming pops off the ends of samples.

very cool ! so i have a question. can i set set a beginning and ending loop point, and then move that predetermined one bar size loop bracket around my sample to find a bunch of 1 bar samples quickly? instead of reseting loop points. ?

Yes.. I was just playing around with this myself.. you can lock the global selection and then move that around searching for your gold.. 🙂

    from the manual:
The length of the global selection can be fixed or locked so that it does not change while dragging the start handle.
To lock the selection length, tap the Padlock icon in the Info bar.
Note that while it is locked, you can change the length by dragging the end handle ( or by typing a value into the Sel Len field in the info bar.)

I think you are asking if you can set a region length (say, one bar loop) and then move the region around until you find a good loop. If so, yes! This is a key part of my workflow. You tap on the lock icon on the tool bar and then you can move the region freely around on the sample at the prescribed region length. And of course you can just set the transport controls to only play the loop as you go.

aghhhhh yes! that is exactly what i was wanting. thanks for sharing

  • Yeah, this is a gem right here!

  • This dev gets it. Already amzing app but this update adds some really cool things and the UI is so much better. Love the ability to customize the transport bar and any of the actions. *anybody know if it's possible to access the action buttons that are under the 'More' section when customizing?

  • @BitterGums said:

Yes.. they’re all present and accounted for..

  • @royor right, but to customize a button you have to select it from the top area ..then select a new one from the list below, but you can't see the buttons under the 'More' section. It doesn't pop up in this customize screen.

  • @BitterGums
If you look closely you’ll see that every button under the MORE section is included in that list below in alphabetical order.. it might be hard to see but they’re there..

Only 20 can be loaded up top.. there’s 37 total (at this time)

    Here’s a better screenshot..

  • edited March 2020

okay.. on the normal editor screen.. press the 'more' button... more Actions pop up. Now, try and change/customize one of those buttons. what happens?

  • I think he’s saying that 20 out of the 37 possible functions can be loaded into the customisable button array. The extra buttons accessed via more can’t be customised.
