we will get used to it
just like we got used to HIV being around
condoms, facemasks - no that big difference?

Or as used to be, when people coughed or sneezed they covered their mouth with their hand. Social manners, or may have been a mind control trick played on humans by the evil aliens from the planet Venus.

Yepp, and that is why it's very important to stay calm and focused instead of creating mass paranoia which the media just loves, it sells copies and creates views...

There's a lot of sh*t going on around us while the media focus is mainly on the pandemic, hence the 'Wag The Dog' references.

There was a nice analysis here why everyone went out and bought shedloads of toilet paper when this 'thing' broke out just get get the 'feeling' that they were in control over the situation...

People want 'one stop solutions' but in this case there is none. Patience and keeping ones sanity is needed.

I've noticed (especially when doing groceries) that people wearing mask totally ignore social distancing mainly because they think and/or feel that the mask is enough to protect them...

Peter Hitchens in the UK has now had enough.

    From Wikipedia:

Initially, when the virus was starting to arrive in the UK, Hitchens supported a soft approach of keeping shops and public spaces open as the Swedish government was doing. It was, however, when the UK government decided to implement full Lockdown restrictions on 24 March 2020[68] that Hitchens began to voice his strongest criticism.[69]

He has referred to the UK government's Coronavirus lock down policy after 24 March 2020 as "the Great Panic" and was shocked by the enthusiastic embrace of it by the British public. He joined other high profile critics such as Lord Sumption and Toby Young in arguing that the full restrictive lock down after this date would have serious negative consequences as a result of restricting civil liberties, locking down a healthy population, and stalling a healthy economy.[70][71] He argues that the government should have carried on like Sweden because, “the evidence from Stockholm, which has so far pursued a rational, proportionate, limited policy, still suggests that Sweden will emerge from this less damaged by far than we will.”[72]

    My view:
Without looking too deeply into it:
    1. Again, he’s probably not an impartial commentator. He’s a rich dude with investments to protect.
    2. He put himself on the line right at the start, as being against it. He’s a pretty egotistical guy, likely to keep finding evidence to back his initial opinion instead of admitting being wrong.
    3. Frankly, we can put civil liberties on hold for a while, this is a crisis.
    4. The main reason the uk economy is so fucked up is because they delayed lockdown too long.
    5. Sweden? The jury is out: https://www.newscientist.com/article/2251615-is-swedens-coronavirus-strategy-a-cautionary-tale-or-a-success-story/

There's a rather simple way to look at this:

Forrest fires where we all live in the forrest and people are wandering about dropping cigarettes in the dry underbrush.

As a home own what can you do to protect your home and life:

when you see some stranger near your property insure they stay a safe distance from your home (social distancing) and if they are close or on your property try and insert a flame retardant material between your underbrush (your breath) and their cigarettes (their breath)

If you want to just roll the dice... have a big party and hire a band and give out free cigarettes. Maybe you're heirs will get an insurance windfall and you can leave a monetary legacy. All your party guests will leave with boxes of free cigarettes. Smoke 'em if got 'em.

The best strategy for rapidly spreading forrest fires is containment. Containment requires stopping people and frisking them for cigarettes. It's intrusive and might be considered an invasion of privacy but it's the best management strategy. Close some areas to the public... bulldoze heathy areas to create fire blocks (travel bans).

We should all try and stop the spread of a fire that will not be defeated without sacrifice. If you just give up you're an ally of the fire. Try and be on the right side of history here. Contain and stop the spread of the fire. Your house could be in the loss column but that's NOT what you should use to consider your role in the overall picture.

My house can survive the fire. OK. But maybe your neighbor's can't and you should give a shit, fool. Do unto others but do the right thing. Don't do them wrong.

    whats more important?
    a) your personal freedom
    or
    b) that you dont kill your neighbors, friends, parents, grandpa and grandma with that shit for your personal freedom?

if you think a is the correct answer you are simply nuts.

Benjamin Franklin once said: "Those who would surrender freedom in order to gain security will end up losing both".

That person was incorrect, and he was also incorrect to say such a thing. Any sort of influential person saying such a highly damaging thing is behaving irresponsibly toward their current and also future generations to promote such a mentality.

don't be afraid to tell people they should stay in their dancing space when they come to close to you
just say don't come near me and cough ^^ it will scare the shit out of them ^^ >:)

Hehe, I'm not too far from doing that but if I would make coughing sounds like 'Khouviid' I'll likely get arrested or something :D
(It's almost as bad as yelling 'There's a bomb in here' at an airport...).

But yeah I do remind people when they get a bit 'too close', some get annoyed when I point it out to them...

Just a few days ago there was this dude who was too close almost drooling at the lady in front of him and he pointed out to me to keep distance to him (I was ~2m behind him). I raised my voice and said "look who's talking" the lady in front reacted and pushed the dude away, it was quite hilarious.

We'll have to wait and see where things go...

From what I have read, and it seems pretty obvious, the biggest threat is in bars and clubs etc where you are shouting to be heard. In these cases you project your virus particles pretty hardcore.

Introverts, soft spoken gents and lasses, and iPad music nerds rejoice. You’re finally contributing to society...by staying in your room doing jack shit. The slacker is king, hallelujah.

lol, I had to tell an old lady to keep her shopping bag out of my ass when standing in line at the supermarket cash register
you should have seen her face when I said ass ^^
but she kept her distance from then on

LOL, also the lines at most supermarket are quite narrow so one can easily keep the 2 meters front & back but when it comes to left & right its barely 0.5 meters. That makes keeping distance pretty hard but no one cares as long as the distance front & back is enough...

There's too many 'logic malfunctions' in the distance implementations in many places...
(How is one supposed to eat at a restaurant if it's mandatory to wear a mask? Lift the mask with every bite?).

Oh well, It sure is fun and interesting to inspect the human behavior in various situations :D

Currently living in northern Idaho and these people are everywhere. It’s impossible to get them to understand because they literally don’t give the slightest fuck about other people and are proud of it.
My favorite example is the giant flag on someone’s house that says “Trump 2020 because fuck you again”

My girlfriend works a retail job and everyday has to deal with all the people that refuse to wear masks. They literally don’t care. No amount of explaining or reasoning or just trying to explain that it’s not about them but the safety of everyone, ESPECIALLY the poor folks that work there and are exposed to it the most and have to sit in one place breathing it all in. And they all come equipped with their own “facts” as to why it’s actually even worse to wear them.
And every single one of them, you can just see in their eyes what a giant piece of shit they actually are. It’s disgusting.

This country is 100% fucked, not just from covid.

Please move out of north Idaho and if you afraid of getting sick stay home !

Well, the alcohol bit maybe even has some truth. And I remember reading something about how smoking could decrease the chances of catching COVID. It’s a complex one! In the case of booze, and smokes, probably hard liquor does kill it a bit, and maybe tobacco helps IF it hasn’t already whacked your immune system. Ultimately, the main factor will be your overall state of health, I guess. That’s the problem with any kind of epidemiology. It’s a really unscientific area of science.

And where is that in anyway scientific evidence masks work. It really isn’t difficult to understand. Just saying it’s obvious they work is not good enough. There is more evidence they don’t work and are making things worse.

Justification for a policy they have bought in? It even says it is an unproven theory. How well did that work out in Peru which had one of the earliest and hardest lockdowns with enforced face mask wearing but has the highest death rate in the world.

  • Ok brainiac.

So what you're really trying to push on unsuspecting morons is that not wearing a mask at all will do a better job of protecting people from COVID than wearing any type of mask — even an N-95.

Is this really your honest opinion?

Sweden has no mandatory mask law and very little mask wearing. Their outcome is no worse than other country's with strict masks laws. People are not in general wearing N-95 masks. In fact the British Government have told people not the purchase medical grade masks, but to wear cloth masks and make their own from old t-shirts.

Professor Carl Heneghan, director of The Centre for Evidence Based Medicine, Oxford University - "the policy is not evidence based" - "cloth masks are worse and may increase your risk of infection" - "mandatory masks came in the UK on 24th July. They were supposed to reduce the risk of infection by 40% within 2 weeks. In fact infections detected have gone up"

  • Odd that the highest death counts come from countries that downplay the disease and/or downplay the usefulness of masks....

Meanwhile in Asia...where masks are used year-round...

This is of course bollocks. Sweden’s outcome has been far worse than countries EVEN NEIGHBORING countries that used stricter measures. You have repeatedly posted made up information as “fact” and ignored the refuting evidence.

Sweden has had 580 covid deaths per million. Almost 6 times as many as neighboring Denmark. Countries with early universal mask wearing and strict quarantine and contact tracing have fared far better than even that. I.e. South Korea has had fewer than 10 deaths per million.
