If we are witnessing the suppression of the virus from the effects of lockdown and a seasonal dip, then god help us if this virus mutates and returns in the autumn. Politics will seem mute.
No evidence of any seasonal dip so far, cases in Louisiana surging despite the warm climate.
Seasonal dips would only just beginning about now, we will probably only know with hindsight.
@lairdhenn : your claim that most professionals (epidemiologists and such) think Trump is doing a great job is simply not true.
Btw, there was no travel ban. More than 40,000 people travelled from China after the restrictions were put into place. The NY outbreak was the result of travel from Europe.
Trump's failure to respond in a timely way or organize a response in a meaningful way is being excoriated by most professionals in non-political roles.
The epidemic has hit the U.s. much harder than in places that responded quickly , decisively and intelligently.
"I’m not even a Trump supporter yet I’m defending him because of utter fucking idiocy like this thread."
This statement invalidates everything else in your post. Welcome to the party. Not sure if you noticed the thread title or not.
Numerous facts have been posted about the mishandling and mismanagement of the pandemic in the US and elsewhere. Lots of opinions, but many facts, too. And it's a fact that the current US administration didn't just make mistakes, they willfully MADE THINGS WORSE in the hopes it would make them look better (like the so-called travel restrictions, that didn't stop more than ten thousand people traveling from China from entering the US per DAY, and didn't institute any consistent health checks). And they still are.
Just think, in the US, preparations - like building up the national stockpile of PPE and ventiliators - could've started in November 2019. Creation of testing kits could've started. Actual plans for how the country as a whole could weather the storm could've been adapted from the plans already existing at a more general level, plus plan how to economically recover faster. Etc. And, hey, the US could've lead the global preparedness and response.
Instead, we have the complete and utter shitshow that is the USA. Thanks to Trump and his handlers.
If you're defending Trump, you've already lost any credibility, because you're ignoring facts.
Thankfully this little backwater echo chamber, and the constantly repeated lies about the White House’s response, will have little to do with the actual elections. This site is just an eddy in a thousand mile river.
Thankfully, the repeated lies to distract, cover up, or excuse the White House's capricious and bungling response are frequently exposed and known by the majority of the US and most of the world, so no matter how much the willfully blind pretend they don't exist, facts still matter - many have been listed in this very thread, and all are easy to find.
You’re so right! We should take advice from the Germans on who our President should be. Thank you Max! It’s all clear now.
Facts may have been presented in this thread, but clearly not by you.
@lairdhenn, tho I disagree with you, you should not judge the “community” by this thread. Only about a dozen voices are participating here. The community is silent.
Most Western countries have bungled the response. We should all be looking to South Korea to learn how to respond to the virus without crashing the economy. South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan are leading the world here, the US and UK are lagging well behind.
A day may come when the masses realise tax robbing billionaires won’t save them. Until then.
Lies? Please find the lies and document what you see as facts.
That's proving my point. I have, indeed, listed facts within in this thread.![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
I fully admit that I've also injected a lot of opinion, too - but you probably maybe sorta could tell that part
Yeah, this is really... depressing. It was cautioned from the start that it'd be unlikely, but, that was still a slim hope being held on to.
To quote the great Bill Paxton, "We're in some real pretty s**t now, man."
Remember this virus didn’t start from a point of mass circulation amongst the population, seasonal variation is not just dependant upon temperature, it’s also highly likely that behaviour plays a part too, this natural behaviour has been altered due to lockdown procedures.
Max, when I get the virus (and at some point we all probably will) I guaran-f’ing-tee you I won’t be sitting there thinking, “I’ve seen the light! If only the Democrats were in charge I might still be alive!”
Stop politicizing the shit out of everything. You know nothing about US politics except what you’ve learned from your own liberal media. Our system is the best in the world, and the only reason folks like you criticize it is because of your own culturally ingrained jealousy towards those things that you can’t control, dominate or take over.
@robertreynolds : Germany's government is hardly liberal. Merkel is a center-right politician. Not everyone who despises Trump is a iiberal. (There are plenty of conservatives who dislike him, too).
It’s a good thing I didn’t imply any of those things then, isn’t it?
The Shining City On The Hill. The pace where if you get cancer in your 40s or 50s, you'll bankrupt yourself trying to stay alive. But it's The Best System In The World 🤑
Let me put it differently. While Max makes some unnuanced comments about our politics, they hardly seem the product of liberal media -- nor does their media tend to be liberal dominated.
The notion that the U.S. has the BEST system in the world is jingoistic nonsense. Plenty of other countries have excellent political system. Ours is showing some structural weaknesses that were not so obviously apparent until now. That structural weakness which, for instance, allows the will of 45% of the country (via the senate) to determine the judiciary or prevent the passage of legislation favored by the majority of Americans, in large part was the fruit of attempts at the founding of the country to get slave states to form a country with non-slave states. The system has allowed the dysfunction that we have now where a minority party can impose its will.
Hardly the best system.
"Liberal media" - the conservatives lost control of that phrase when they started applying it to anything they didn't agree with. As such, it holds no value, and the only meaning it has is that it's media that doesn't serve as propaganda for the conservative crusade.
Also, a political system is only as good as the people who support it. Our country is teetering on the brink of destruction, brought about in large part due to those who falsely purport to love it and believe it to be the best. Again, that positioning may have held strength, if it wasn't repeatedly used for cheerleading and keeping the believers in line, all the while constantly undermining it through actions that go counter.
No seasonal dip? So it's not like the seasonal flu?
Okay.
So how long will it last? How far off is a vaccine? Any signs of mutation?
Personally, I need to find a new job and a new place to live. I guess other people are in the same boat, since hotel prices have gone up. Nice way to take advantage. Other friends say their employers are laying people off too, using Covid-19 an an excuse, and they work in IT, which shouldn't be affected by Covid-19, you'd think.
