No, only speed and pitch can be modified, AudioStretch APP can tell you what note is playing

Yes it’s one of only 2 AU sampling drum machines. I bought Pulse last night even though I have Digistix and just got Drum computer, skiiid.

Yea I had segments too so wanted that combo.

I went a little drum crazy this year... lol.

So, @Poppadocrock, what’s your verdict? Digistix or EG Pulse? I’ve been on the fence forever.

That is a great question. I’ve only had eg pulse for a few days now, so I haven’t gotten that deep into it yet. But one major difference for me is velocity layers for samples. Digistix has 5 slots on each pad so you can load velocity layered samples, or do a round robin (RR is when you use similar velocity level and sounding samples but it plays through them in order with every pad press, so 1-5, as opposed to the velocity layers which plays the sample based on velocity of the step.)

So right off the bat I'm a little Disappointed EG Pulse doesn’t have that, because velocity layered drums, especially kick, snare, sound more realistic. Obviously you need velocity layered samples for this but I’ve managed to get so free packs over time that have those. (Check out Reverb - Famous Studio Packs) Also DS has random pattern creation, and not sure if EG Pulse has that. I’ve been working with DS for a year, so I know it quite well, only had EG pulse a few days so it’s hard to compare just yet. If I had to say right now, it be DS, but only because Of the few things I mentIoned and the fact I know it so much better. I think I like the EGP GUI better, but again still early days for me with EG P. Ask me again in a few weeks.

On a side note it’s not the same because it’s an Au drum synth, not a drum sampler, but I love Drum Computer.

I've been playing with drambo for drum sequencing. Am I wrong in saying that you can only have 15 tracks, instead of 16?

I think one has to be the master. But don’t hold me to that. You can use multiple instances in a host as well.

Lol. I Seriously went a little overboard this year too but I spend a lot of time making music on my iPad, there will also be plenty of indoor time until a vaccine is obtainable, and when I think about buying a coffee or a pack of cigarettes, which costs about the same as some apps, it’s easy to justify for me. What can you do for 8 bucks or whatever that will give you hours and hours of enjoyment and education, not much.

Also I tend to wait for this week every year, and overload a little while prices are so great, then spend lots of time going through what I got and learning each app. Only app I’m waiting on is atom 2 at the moment so I’m not anticipating many purchases for a few months other then atom 2.

  • Thought I was done, but the IceWorks synths pulled me back in. 😄

I recently purchased GeoShred and so far I really like it but need more time to know what I am doing

I have been eyeing the GeoSwam instruments and I know that they just went on sale but after doing some research I just wanted to let folks know that there are limitations with these...

Mainly that they can only be controlled by geoShred or an mpe controller, no midi etc. Also they are monophonic.

The big discovery I made is that they are "in the near future" goinh to release ios app versions of these instruments that will have all functionality...

I am no expert so I refer you to the faq page

    http://www.moforte.com/geoShredAssets5.0/help/FAQs/#geoSwamDifference

The Geoshred SWAM instruments can be controlled by an external controller on MIDI channel 2. Each expression parameter can be mapped using Learn mode. This is described in other threads on this forum and I have confirmed that it works.

Here's a video of a guy playing them using a MIDI harmonica!

I have all 6 as does the prolific @LinearLineman who is a MIDI Keyboard enthusiast.
Here's the way to benefit from the GeoSwam instruments:

    1. assign your MIDI input app or controller to channel 2 or above. MPE synths accept standard MIDI on channels 2 and above.

    2. be aware that MPE uses the pitch bend commands of MIDI to manage glides and portamentos. So, using the controller pitch bend will convert to +/- 2 octaves. So, use it gently of change the pitch bend settings in GeoShred back to +/- 1/2 step and not +/- 24 steps.

    3. Monophonic solo modeled instruments seem to be pretty standard but GeoShred is an AUv3 app so you can run multiple instances and put chords through an app like Polythmus that converts chords to discrete MIDI channels (like 2,3,4,5...) so you can make chords with 3-GeoShred instances and Polythemus or a Mozaic script.

The big discovery I made is that they are "in the near future" goinh to release ios app versions of these instruments that will have all functionality...

Just remember we waited about 6 months for the GeoShred instruments... the SWAN folks are slow and they will likely charge more than the GeoShred instances because they have a unique product on IOS. These instruments are "modeled" and do not consume GB's of storage like a Pure Synth or Ravenscroft. They do it with math and that means they are not re-packaging Apple DSP code with a GUI... they are hiring smart math wizards and need to re-coup their investments. So, I expect the SWAM products to have shockingly hire price tags like the IK Multimedia B-3X Organ... which rivals their desktop product. Slowly we will see these amazing pieces of software made available on IOS at maybe 50% of the desktop price. I hope to see PianoTeq at some point and it's $129 on the desktop. Ravenscroft is typically bought on sale for $18.

I am no expert so I refer you to the faq page

I'd jump on this bundle sale and get all 6 for $6 each. They are a lot of fun and the GeoShred
UI is magical and with a little effort you can sound like a real instrument with nuanced expression. Or wait for SWAM and see how they provide a UI. I bought their Noise Violin and
I can play it on my iPhone and record on my iPad but that's about it. No AUv3. One instance that consumes the whole IOS device. No DAW's allowed. Not a big fan of their approach and this behaviors was in the fine print. I'll be the got killed with refunds. It is a lovely violin but I passed on all the other SWAM's in Noise.

GeoShred by the way has a ton of little extras under the hood for editing vibrato rate and
a neat little feature that applies a portamento if you use a soft velocity for the second note which means you can glide and slide between notes on a standard MIDI keyboard. It's worth checking out.

Buy it and I'll wager you keep it. Especially if you add Polythemus to your "cart" and can play chords too. Of course you'll start to hit CPU/DSP limits but even 2 voices of these instruments sounds great... better than any other sampled instrument I have purchased
for these instruments. Tho' some are close. Still, I paid more than $6 for most of them.

NOTE: If you send anything to the GeoShred SWAM instruments on channel 1 it will pop up a warning about using Non MPE controllers. Don't do that. Use channel 2 or above. Setting a MIDI generator to channel 2-16 is also easy.

Yes, Audio Modeling, makers of SWAM, are working on their own app:
    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/874764/#Comment_874764

I appreciate that they made a demo of the Euphonium SWAM but the controls do not look as good to me as GeoShred's. You cannot control vibrato manually like on GeoShred - instead you are dependent on an LFO. You have to use your left hand for expression unlike in GeoShred where you can use the same finger for expression and also to select a note.

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DTNTEOQI_hiLCmUO8vw_gRQ_ti85b6V6/view

They say the new app will be MPE compliant so it could be controlled by GeoShred, but there's always some compromise or another that comes with getting MIDI involved instead of making the instrument available inside GeoShred itself. I am disappointed that they chose to not release the brass SWAM instruments as GeoShred IAPs and instead want you to buy the new app, but i respect their decision and hope they will reconsider in the future.

That said, I will soon buy the GeoSWAM bundle as I only own 2 of the 6 instruments and the discounted bundle is still a bargain for me.

Oops. My memory is failing me. It's $8.33. They are all great, IMHO so the bundle makes sense to me. But I love chamber music. For some the tenor sax might be all they need.
I've got an Akai EWI that I need to test.

On the other foot: Embertone's Ocarina Amaya, Jubal Flute, Shire Whistle and Sensual Sax are on sale for $5 each. They must be models because they are around 35MB in size but they sound great. @LinearLineman can make the Flute sound very authentic. It's got a world
flute type of tone like it's made of wood... extra lows and mid's and no harsh highs. I'll bet they just tweak the model and make the Jubal Flute into a Shire Whistle for another $5 at the register.

  • I watched steadily for days leading up to Friday and the weekend and bought ... nothing. There’s nothing I really need or want in the picks, as far as my workflow goes anyway. And I have enough “toys” on my phone too.

I AM hanging out for a universal version of Agonizer though!

A full scale midi church organ that measures the air flow in the pipes and translates that into midi.

While we're at it, what apps are there that use the modelling approach instead of soundfonts? I have to admit, the GEO-xy instruments sound pretty amazing. And I like the expressiveness of the GeoSHRED. I like the way higher harmonics start to become dominant when you do vibrato while having a note sustained for a few seconds.

Lagrange also has some "modelled" string/flute models that sound pretty cool.

I did this except got standard on both! They are both great. Reason is great because the rack can be used in ableton. You get those great synths and their mastering effects. They both also offer payment plans if you don't want to drop all the cash now.

  • @McD ... an Akai EWI!? Since when? And when do we get treated to a SWAM demo on it?

  • edited November 2020

Judging from the fun I'm having with geoshred I should definitely buy it... i'm also excited about what this thing could do with other synths with midi out. Sending one of the strings to mononoke, control another synth with the rest of the fretboard... but ughh... moneyyy....

  • @LinearLineman said:

It's tricky to play. They put the default pitch bend on the thumb that holds up the instrument and I keep blowing notes with minor pitch variations. That sounds really bad. I found a way to just turn the pitch bend off. But then I miss the feature so I need to practice not moving that thumb. Using a neck strap helps... anyway, I put it aside but I should do the work and show it that "I'm the controller" and it is my slave (controller).

It gives me appreciation for the fact that all controllers take effort to master.
