I tried the 3 Motifs (A,B,C) using LK Scenes:
1 = C dorian bass with 4 melodic layers (8 bars)
2 = C dorian variation bass with 4 melodic layers (8 bars)
3 = F minor bass with 4 melodic layers (8 bars)
Each Motif is assigned to an LK Scene and I think I played 1,2,3,2,1,2...
I put some GeoShred SWAM Cello on top and (damn you) GeoShred changed the scale when recording from C dorian to G dorian... arg. I only hit one E which sticks out like a screw driver through a canvas.
I don't like the 2 Motif... it's rhythms are confusing but I can generate a new set and just replace the MIDI in one LK scene. Being lazy, I really like that. And I'll get another shot at setting up the Cello scale. Let's see if AUM saved everything correctly for another session tomorrow.
Ohhhhhh, that’s nice
Is it me or when export and select 2 files it only creates 1?
It does create two files (export to the files app and you will see) but some of the other iOS apps/DAWs only see one file when you import it directly to them. This is why the recent addition Piano Motifs to export the two files individually. Which program are you sending the file(s) to?
Audioshare
I seem to remember Audioshare is one location that only shows one file. Try importing to the Files app and you will see what I mean or export each midi file separately from Piano Motifs. All of this info is further back in this thread.
I think GS has scale per patch. If you change patches it goes to the last scale saved for that patch. I heard the E as a bit of color, not an error.
I tried making contrasting Motifs using my own A/B progressions and loaded up the wealth of variations
into 3 LK scenes and layered some SWAN Fluegelhorn over the top:
"User Arpeggios" are fun... I'd love more slots like 16. But 8 can be useful.
The Motifs are all 2 bars long but I tried to coordinate various User Arp patterns to
fit together.
Since 2 bar patterns get old fast I ran all my LK MIDI through Rozeta Scalar so I could
force modulations in the performance. I also tried a but of hand editing of the Piano Rolls
adding double-time bass notes for extra variety but hand editing gets old fast.
All 6 synths are "Continua" presets with some hand tweaking to make the bass crisp:
This is an excellent app.. I find it much more useful and 'musical' than other midi arp, sequencer apps.
One question though, maybe @Gavinski @azul3D_Apps can answer -
Is it possible to run multiple instances of Piano Motif? I am trying to route one pair of Melody-Accomp to one instrument (say piano) and another pair of Melody-Accomp to another instrument (say guitar). Possible?
Any plan to make it AU in near future?
It's not a AU so multiple instances are not possible.
Really cool @McD.
This was a lot of fun... I made a folder of Piano Motifs variations by creating a progression and then saving various accompaniments with associated melodies. But the life is in the bass parts (Arpeggios, syncopations and User Arpeggios). Then I loaded these MIDI instances into LK and created 5 scenes.
LK will allow you do changes scenes on the 1/4 note level (or even shorter). So, you can change scenes rhythmically and create new patterns even beyond the variety that Piano Motifs provides. Sending these
bass lines into Kronecker Clockwerks Synth is magical... and I added a piano and some pan drums to add extra world music flavors:
You’re on fire this weekend!
Wow, @McD!
That was pretty magical!
Really loving how you are pushing the motifs to another level...
I tried a 16 Bar Progression in E Phrygian but I think it's a but of a mess harmonically. The progression
just doesn't seem to hold with a lot of layers. But the rhythmic texture seems interesting... a bit of Jamaica to my ears:
The E Phrygian really comes though... it's the mode of notes from E-to-E using only the white keys. Play a black key and it just sounds wrong.
I played a MiniMoog solo over the top.
You've been on a roll with these @McD , I especially like the Kronecker track with the E Phrygian a close second.
Thanks @GeoTony, @SNystrom, @Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr for the feedback.
I found a way to layer up Piano Motifs Loops that minimizes the sync'ing problems
and has some other live mix playback benefits.
Set up Piano Motifs to drive a nice target in AUM and use the AudioKit L7 Looper in the
FX slot. Record an initial Loop. For every additional Loop (changing instruments with each Loop)
start the Piano Motifs app in sync with the 1st Loop (using a split screen instance of Piano Motifs helps).
If the 2 Loops playback well together in L7 keep them... if not delete one and try again.
Repeat for as many loops as you like (I stopped with 7).
Then set up an output track in AUM to record and using the volume controls in L7 to bring Loops
up into audible volume and create a final performance.
I also recorded some tracks at 120 BPM with extra tracks at 60 and 20 BPM. With all Loops in the same key it seems to hold together in a Terry Riley vein.
Tip of the Hat to @thesoundtestroom for reminding me what a great app iWaveStation is with his "Korg Milpitas" LIVE stream (in stereo no less). I tend to forget about iWaveStation
since it's an IAA app but with Loop layering it has a wealth of great presets to choose from... more than any other app on my iPad... 4 of the 7 Loops are iWaveStation presets
and the remaining 3 Loops are Korg Module Pro (Choir, Pizz Strings, Hybrid Synth).
Wow, thanks for sharing your workflow, @McD!
It was pretty obvious there are a ton of moving parts involved in your pieces, but that offers a relatively detailed peek behind the magic curtain.
Thanks!
AudioKit L7 is great because your listening to music 90% of the time and just moving between
Piano Motifs to audition extra layers and AUM to trigger L7 recordings. It's wise to save the L7
session just before the final AUM recording so you have the work saved for any re-work.
The only fiddling you do in AUM is picking out PM target apps and routing the audio to the
track holding L7 as an FX app. The final recording doesn't need PM or any targets at all...
so you can focus your attention on the L7 user interface for tweaking the volumes of the various
layers (Loops). L7 can handle Loops from 1 to 32 bars.
Is L7 recording audio loops? Why not just do that in AUM? (Obviously I am not understanding a crucial piece here...)
Now that Atom 2 is released, I’m eager to hear what workflows y’all come up with 🎶
@Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr asked my question...
Using AudioKit L7 for recording layers works great and helps save a lot of time because you can hear
the sync with each added layer and reject anything that doesn't sit in the pocket.
Yes. L7 does the recording as each new Loop is created. You only have to trigger it and everything is automatic. AUM requires that you:
With L7 you just trigger a new/additional Loop of 1,2,4,8,16 or 32 bars. Loops can vary in lengths from this list so my Synth Solo recordings were 32 bars over 4 bar loops. Multiple solo (loops) can be mixed in for longer song forms.
I am also excited to see what Atom 2 does with imported MIDI Loops from Piano Motifs. Sometimes,
I just want to edit a few notes and the piano roll editor in LK is a pain for a MIDI-based workflow.
10 Atom 2 instances loaded with Piano Motifs MIDIs driving 4 synth apps at BPM 250 and the CPU is 30%. It's easy to audition MIDI parts and reject them and load alternatives. Then AUM makes assigning parts to synths very easy.
Check this out... do you "follow" IOS Developers trying to get some attention?
How do you sync the start of PM for tracks 2+ with L7 playback of the previous track(s)? Thanks.
I aim the trigger to match track #1 and if it misses, I abort and re-try. Every new track is
manually started and confirmed by listening. Any track can be disposed and re-recorded
at any time. The key is to only accept tracks that seem to fit well.
This issue can be averted by going to the manual MIDI file save and load into LK or Atom 2.
The pure MIDI approach that defers audio rendering to the end has the benefit that basslines or chord "crunches" can be manually edited.
But my goal here is to find the shortest path to multi-track projects that have minimal menu
diving and screen clicks.
For pure speed, L7 is winning but I've only done one Atom 2 project and I may find some
strengths for that approach... like (hopefully) concatenating Piano Motifs MIDIs for longer
song forms.
A new version of Piano Motifs (v2.24.2) is available for download. This version has the following new features:
• Library audition mode for quick listening of saved motifs
• New drone accompaniment style with configurable tone and octave
• Voice leading arpeggios and other new preset accompaniments
• New chord progressions
• Ability to reset settings to default
• UI improvements for better settings screen utilization on certain devices
Enjoy!
