My, this is one of the most benevolent devs! :-)
I cranked out a group of 3/4 Motifs and loaded them into Atom 2 instances.
I find that makes it easy to select interesting synths for each voice. I then added Funk Drummer playing a triple pattern and played from FluegelHorn/Ocarina echoes over the top.
Be Great if Piano Motifs done drag and drop midi now Atom 2 is getting it.
I set up a 32-bar chord progression in G harmonic minor and imported 10 tracks of MIDI variations into Atom 2 instances. I recorded the results in AUM and played that recording back to add some GeoShred SWAM Cello on top.
I’m having some difficulties with saved midi files. No doubt it’s operator error but if I save the midi with the first selection in the list, the one fright below the audio option and open it in Atom2, all I see is the melody notes. Am I wrong in expecting to see all the mini notes in that file?
@RJB, no operator error, Atom2 only imports one track of the MIDI file. I saw in the Atom2 thread that the dev is readying a 2.02 update:
"Version 2.0.2 is now under review and includes the following improvements:
MIDI files will now automatically set the clip length and adjust the loop markers when imported.
Multi-channel MIDI files will include all lanes as separate Patterns when imported.
Drag and drop import from other apps. Open Files side by side, and drag MIDI files onto Atom instances.
Improve discoverability of all advanced configuration panels (available with a long-press)."
The clip length adjustment is also a good improvement.
I guess I should’ve tested it in Cubasis first before raising the question. Thanks @azul_3d for the reply and your fantastic app, I expect I’ll be using it a lot in Atom 2.02.
Brilliant drag and drop. @azul3D_Apps your a star.
@Jumpercollins, I was quoting what the Atom2 dev had planned for his rev2.02 app. Unfortunately Piano Motifs doesn't implement drag and drop functionality and I don't see that support in the near future. Sorry to disappoint you
I was the one who requested library audition. And you did it!!!
I’m so impressed! I just left you another tip. Thank you very, very much!
I wish more developers were as responsive as you.
You just keep making this program more impressive all the time.
Just a reminder, I still want melodies that are more complex.
Maybe more notes like triplets sprinkled every now and then or grace notes, etc.
Think unexpected.
I know that’s probably asking a lot as far as programming goes but you’re getting so close.
BTW, The accompaniments have been becoming more varied and richer all the time. Great!
Keep pushing that envelope. I think you are going to blow everybody out of the water who does generative apps.
I often find simple, repetitive motifs more beautiful than those which are complex, "interesting", rich etc. @azul3D_Apps as you keep responding to adding more features, please never let the app stop autogenerating the simpler motifs for us simpler people:)
Check this out:
and another:
Only problem is that Atom 2 cannot currently record sustain cc unless that has changed. I said in my vid that it could, I was wrong about that unfortunately. So Atom 2 will only be a good solution when automation recording is added
Can insert a conversion program that maps CC 64's (sustain) to the extreme range of the allowed NOTES (C8 or A0) and re-convert it back on playback to CC 64's?
Sure. "mfxConvert" works from the MIDI Tools collection.
I tried it and it works.
I'm sure this will be addressed in an update ASAP.
Sunday Jam placing 5 Piano Motifs melodies w bass into 5 Atom 2 Cells and adding Funk Drummer:
NOTE: the latest Atom 2 update imports Piano Motifs MIDI's are detects the Loop length and Time Signature automatically. This saves a lot of extra effort to sync an Atom session to a Piano Motifs set of input files.
This change encouraged me to create 80 bar loops. Using the previous version of Atom 2 was a pain with just 12 bars... since it imported 2 bars and every track needed to be expanded with "+1 bars" 10 times and for 10 Atoms that was 80 button presses. I did 5 Atoms this time and just loaded 5 MIDI's and everything was good to go. Of course assigning Atoms to instruments is the bulk of the work now to get a good sounding arrangement.
@theoneone, thanks!
At some point in time I had experimented with acciaccaturas but I just couldn't get them sounding right so I dropped the idea. Triplets would be more complicated to incorporate as they would have to take into account the rythm of the piece for them not to clash. Hopefully you have tried the Swing option for a different melody style.
@bleep, for sure, sometimes "less is more". Any new feature that can significantly change the way the motifs sound will be implemented as a new setting, and only be applied if the user decides to set it.
I as a user would not never use an "add grace notes" feature. I'd rather take the generated melody and make my own decisions on what ornamentation to add to it. Sometimes I want to use an idea I ripped off from Persian music for ornamentation. Sometimes I'd rather use an old-school blues kind of ornamentation. And so on.
I can imagine someone trying to make an app that would generate a melody with blues bends added to it. I can also imagine the likelihood of that app sounding anywhere as good as any of the blues Kings (Albert, Freddie, or BB) - probably not.
I feel like I would end up stripping away the app-generated ornamentation if it were added on without my input.
“Grace notes” was just a momentary thought (fart?) and probably not a really useful idea. I guess I was just trying to think of a way to give more nuance to the pieces. And to make it clear, I do like simple motifs. I do not want to get rid of the that creation method as they provide a creative way for us to fill in the gaps ourselves and engage our interaction and imagination.
My suggestion was more aimed at creating the occasional experimental complex melody. Brian Eno does this at times. Maybe instead, a button (option for those looking for something a little more left/right of center) that takes more chances once in a while, or as I mentioned before, maybe a third channel for counterpoint melodies? And to the creators suggestion, I will try the swing option.
I do realize that these suggestions are not everybody’s cup of tea. And I also realize that programming these kind of ideas is a difficult proposition or maybe too far out for the original intent of the developer. I am just throwing out ideas and if something sticks to the wall, and more people find it useful, I think everybody benefits.
@thenoneone, thanks for all your input and your support. The idea for Piano Motifs is to continue evolving, incorporating new ideas to improve the variety of random motifs and allowing the user to have some control over the generation, so all feedback in that respect is always very welcome.
There is currently a setting that might help you get a little more "experimental" results for the motifs. It is the User Defined Melody Constraint. This setting allows the user to define what notes of the scale can be used on a motif. Even at the default setting, which is all notes available, the generation algorithm will have a different approach at how it chooses notes with respect to the chord being played (even though triad notes will have more weight, all others will have equal weight to be chosen), and you might hear some unexpected notes here and there. For more "adventurous" results, you might want to choose the non-triad notes (2,4,6,7) and one triad note (1,3 or 5), or even none. In general, I have found this setting extremely useful. It is probably underutilized. You can get some great results by constraining the motifs to just 2 or 3 melody notes.
Another thing to try is to use the secondary dominant and the parallel chords in chord progression programming. Piano Motifs bases its melodies on the chords being played. So if you create unexpected chord progressions, you will get unexpected melodies to go with them.
@thenoneone, here is an example of using the User Defined Melody Constraints setting with notes 1,2,4,6,7 selected. Of course, in music everything is subjective, so this might not be so "out of the norm" for many, but is just an example of what could be obtained.
Ooh
Just updated one got arrangement
Nice work
Yes, 😀
A new version of Piano Motifs has been released (v2,25,4). This version has the following new features:
• New motif arrangement function is now available. You can now arrange your motifs to create longer musical pieces. Create your own song structures using different motifs for different song sections.
• Time signature will be added to file name along with bpm, key and scale when indicated while saving.
• New Voice Leading Arpeggios Accompaniment Style.
• New chord progressions.
Some notes on arrangements:
Give the Voice Leading Arpeggios Accomp style a try. It produces some very nice accompaniments.
Enjoy!
Arranging is the only thing I missed on the app.
Just bought w/ IAP. Keep that fire going!
I am so impressed by the rate that you have been improving this app. One thing I would love to see when generating random progressions is something to indicate what chords were used in the motif. That way if we want to make variations on a progression we can. This would be especially helpful in combination with the arranger for composing full pieces!
BOOM, this update is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This update is so sick.. holy hell, I’m excited. I’ve always wanted this feature, to basically create a song, getting 2 or more motifs to fit together is awesome. I’ve been sold on this app since day 1, and it’s improved exponentially since then. Big up, big up, to @azul3D_Apps for creating such a gem, then continuing to polish it into something even better. This is a must have app imho.
Yup. No more.
