@WillieNegus Honestly LK is a great sequencing app. For users who enjoyed Modstep and like the Clips model of doing things in AUM will love LK.

I know that the devs are working on an update to get clip launching working with the LaunchPad X. Right now it works with the Akai Mini.

What i love about LK is @sinosoidal focus and care for the app. We’ve seen a lot of great updates recently and i know they will deliver in the future.

As far as sequencing external gear with BM3 you just need to stick a silent sample on the Pad you want to play from and it then allows you to route to external gear (not sure why they haven’t fixed this it’s so weird).

There are a few quality of life enhancements LK needs but i am sure they will appear before we know it. Let me know if you have any specific questions or want to see a workflow beyond what I’ve posted on my YouTube Channel.

Blessings and joy to all 🙏🏼👊🏼

    Update Requests:
. Ability to record to a FREE length sequence instead of being bound to a fixed length
. Ability to UNDO/REDO notes entry
. Allow Clips to be created if ARMED and empty and user begins entering notes during Playback/Record
. Ability to set Keyboard Scale to Per Track or Global

I am sure others will have a few more but these are the ones I’ve noticed so far. None of these are show stoppers and would be nice to have.

  • I've just been getting familiar with LK and would like to see a 'fold' option for notes when scales are used.
The 'red dots' are a nice touch so a fold option shouldn't be that hard to add?
(Maybe it's there, I've yet to do any RFTM on this, just getting to know it intuitively).

  • @Samu

Yeah. The FOLD feature is also a nice one.

  • I have a question about clip launching. Is it possible to set a particular clip to be triggered by a particular note trigger. One of the cool things in ModStep is the ability for pretty much anything you can tap to be mapped via MIDI learn.

Yeah. The FOLD feature is also a nice one.

Other 'gotchas' that I've bumped to are (maybe it doesn't make sense but I'll share anyway!).

If I make a selection of notes and want to remove just one note from the selection it doesn't work properly?!
    (ie. all notes get deleted).

Logically 'Shift Tap' on a note should remove the note from selection and doing a 'Shift Selection' could remove the newly selected notes from the existing selection (ie. Invert Selection). I know 'Shift' can be used to add notes to a selection but not remove them from the selection.

Currently tapping on any selected note with or without shift just deletes them :(

Other selection options would be, 'Shit Tap' on a piano note to select all notes and use shift tap to add / remove notes from the selection, super handy for selecting for example all Hi-Hats or Snares in a pattern for further editing.

@sinosoidal Maybe some of the above is already being worked on?

Should I bump into any more gotchas I'll share them here...
    Cheers!

  • I just got the Matrix iap, this looks very promising for anyone doing AUM jams etc. The functionality has improved quite a bit just in the last months! Kudos.

CC automation is my favorite part. @WillieNegus, I find BM3 to still crash often when doing any editing related to CC curves, so this in itself is one good reason to get it. Imagine setting up some default CC curves (linear growth, sine etc) in multiple clips, then save this as an AUM channel template. Now you can immediately bring some movement to any AUM jam, with very little effort, and easily launch different automation variations, using the clips.

@sinosoidal I suggest you make the app easier to get into for first-time users by displaying the piano roll upon launch by default. Now, a user may wonder whether he needs to tap or double tap the clip to see the piano roll, then tap or double tap the scene launch on the right side to see if that exposes the piano roll, then finally discover that hidden bar you need to drag. Or maybe just have a "Drag here" animation going the first time.

  • @sinosoidal The 'Quantise' and 'Duplicate Selection' buttons are missing in the Matrix editor both in AUv3 and Stand Alone...

    Some CC feature requests:

    • Now you can tap a linear segment and drag it up/down. Would be really nice if you also could drag left/right to change the curvature between the two points, from logarithmic to linear to exponential in varying degrees (default as linear, maybe a long tap to open a reset menu).
    • The left side has this small dropdown box where you select which CC number (or velocity) to look at. Would be really nice if there could be a second box here, where you select some other CC number, and have that displayed at the same time. Purpose: properly align some CC changes, related to the other CC. I suggest that the current box could have a red font, corresponding to the red automation curve we now have, and the secondary box could have a grey font and grey line. Only the red line can be edited.
  • Another small request, on the Notes edit panel: In addition to "Select all", "Deselect all", it could be useful with a "Select 2nd" for selecting every second note, especially for adjusting high hat velocities etc.
Hm, not sure what it would mean for other melodic sequences with overlapping notes ... :)

They have been moved to the note tools section:

  • Half/Double-Tempo to Midi Tools could come in handy.

Or perhaps this: tap and hold a piano note, then tap Select all in the Note tools to select all of this particular note. That would also work well for my “Select 2nd” suggestion.

My question is how stable is LK? Is it CPU intensive? If so, what seems to be the sweet spot in terms of how many AU synths one could expect to run on iPad Pro 10.5 2018?

TBH, it's crashed on me twice now, losing work in progress. This was in AUM and happened when adding an AU plugin. the LK window wasn't open or running, but got invalidated when I added the plugin. So, now I know to save the AUM session before adding plugins. Next time it happens I'll be more diligent and send crash logs to the developer.

There's also a bug where when you play a three note chord, the length gets sustained to like a quarter-note even though I only tap the chord. It only happens on three note chords, and it happens with any on-screen keyboard (LK's, AUM's, KB-1). The developer says it's an iOS bug they haven't been able to run down, but I don't recall it happening with any other app. Weird.

Other than that, which I can live with for now, it's great.

  • Are the iaps on sale?

    Another awesome update!
Any videos showing the MPC Mini support? I don't have one, but they're cheap enough that I'd consider getting one to play with. I do, however, have a LPX and OG LP Pro, so depending on the timeline for them to be supported I could just wait.

We should do a new video during the following week to highlight the new features.

But I strongly advise you to wait a bit. We just got an LPX in the office with that goal.

It's funny, LPX is my dj nick name for more than 17 years now -> https://soundcloud.com/sinosoidal

I played in notes with lk chorder. When I hit undo, it removed the entire clip instead of just the notes. Atom has a similar functionality where the undo only effects drawing in or functions such as quantize etc.

Which this isn't such a big deal with atom because each synth is routed specifically to each instance of Atom. It's easy to go in and clear the few flubbed notes.

But it's quite different with lk because I don't realize I'm recording over the same clip until it loops and at that point, I have to start over on 2 clips, or tediously go back and remove each note. Either way it's a buzz kill and I almost immediately exit aum and just use atom.

I think we are not making the recorded notes undable. Something to fix on the next version. The reason it has deleted the whole clip is probably because the last action was create a clip.

This sounds like a wild free mode. Without even triggering the desired slot?

@echoopera as always thanks for your incredible feedback.

We know that not everyone has a launchpad or akai grid controller available. Doing a global midi assignment mechanism might be a complex task. We need to think about this a little.

This is indeed an interesting point. We have recently added the ability to append select by using the shift button. However, I do feel your pain and I do think your suggestion makes all the sense. Shift + tap note should select/deselect because there is no other way of doing it.

Maybe we could select append by default, and make shift tap a select/deselect operation.

It is also a interesting suggestion, pressing the shift + keyboard key to select all the notes in that pitch

    Let us sleep on this.

/2 and x2 the note length?

Yes, that too would be awesome!
Many times I just use simple 16th notes but with 50% or even 25% gate-time so note-length /2 would be a perfect tool here.

For Double/Half-tempo, 'stretch' the midi events. So one bar of 1/16th notes would in 'half-time' be 2 bars of 1/8th notes...
...and for 'double-time' of a 2 bars full of 16th notes it would become 1 bar with 32nd notes etc.
Think of it like midi time-stretch.

A feature I love in Logic (and iOS GarageBand) is that it's piano roll editor remembers the 'length & velocity' of the last drawn note/event. So with 16th grid selected, if I draw in a 1/4 or 1/8 note the next drawn note will also be 1/4 or 1/8.

Just noticed a double-tap on shift 'lock' & 'unlocks' it.
Perfect for adding notes to a selection using the 'lasso'. It makes the 'invert selection' feature even more logical :)

Other things would be 'shift drag' to copy the selected notes to another location?

The current 'Duplicate' behaves more like 'Repeat Selection' and makes it a bit tricky to grab a small selection without overwriting the note events on the following next step(s).

So if I want to copy events from step one the 'duplicate' function puts them on step 2 in some cases overwriting the note events on step two.

Don't know of 'long-tap' to bring up cut/copy/paste menu could eventually solve this?
(This way it would even be possible to copy events between clips).

Sorry for the 'brain farts', feel free to ignore if no one else requests similar features :)
    Cheers!

Ah thanks. Got that one already 😉

  • I think it would be useful to expand quantization options to note lengths as well, with options to quantize lengths to the currently selected quantization grid, legato or fixed length (1/2,1/4,1/8...).
