The scale-colored piano roll in Ableton 11 (with highlighted root node and option to scale fold) looks like the best way to enter notes. Let’s hope LK wants to stay close in design to its remote target
Define perfection!
These are all interesting suggestions!
Hi!
@sinosoidal is there a way to record midi unquatized and to add swing to a clip? Thanks.
For me personally I have little to wish for as it is, so definitely near perfection without going overboard on extra functionality.
One thing I haven't exactly figured out, or can put my finger on, is sometimes it doesn't seem to be completely in sync in more elaborate setups, like when sequencing a drum from LK and anther drum from, say Rozeta Rythm. Anyone else experiencing this?
Hi! Yes there is. On the status bar, set recording quantization to None.
Under clip properties (press and hold a clip on the grid) there is a Rythm section where you can swing and humanize
I've been experiencing those myself with ruismaker, drum computer and ting. It's under my radar. It will probably be the next focus.
Thanks this is essential for me 👌👍😊
Suggestion: Rather than having to press shift to add a track or scene, why not just have a dimmed ⨁ button to the right of the last track and below the last scene? I'm not fond of needing two hands to get to the shift functions when I'm using one hand to hold the iPad.
Could we get an option to “mute” clips so when we launch a scene, those muted clips wouldn’t start playing until manually launched?
Those clips could be grayed out or a less saturated shade of the clip color, indicating they are muted.
I was just curious about the same thing few minutes ago, exactly becuase I was holding the iPad with one hand definitely this would be more nautral way to add scene / track.
That might work! Good thinking! Been wondering how that shift could be improved.
First and foremost I have to say, LK is such a great tool! I honestly didn't expect there will be a capable Ableton-like clip launcher for iOS in the near future. And here it is now, even with growing external controller and launchpad support and an incredibly fast development. I'm already a big fan of FRMS and DRC, so I'm really excited to watch LK growing. Maybe one day we will even see the integration of an audioclip launcher 🤤, if it's even possible with this platform.
At this point in time I’m actually quite satisfied and pleasantly surprised what has already been implemented considering the short amount of time. As always there is room for improvement, here my modest two cents:
Option to delete & duplicate multiple tracks and scenes per shift-multiselect
Additional Follow Action 'Jump' (to a certain clip No.), would be very helpful and practical.
A possibility when creating new tracks and scenes, also for those already existing (per shift-multiselect tracks/scenes/clips) to in total change the color of all clips of a track, all clips of a scene and all shift-selected clips to a certain color.
I would like it better, more consistent and in the interest of a smoother workflow if the midi cc controller selection would be accessible via either an always visible and scrollable area or a drop down panel directly below/above the current drop down 'Velocity', instead of switching to the large pop up window in the middle of the screen to add CCs. There the horizontal space for the CC names is admittedly small at the moment but the info panel on the right is quite expansive in comparison and could be reduced. If then still necessary the cc naming can be abbreviated to e.g. 'Foot Contrl.’...
...which could lead eventually to three drop downs:
a. By habit and as right-handed person I prefer the shift button to be placed on the left side, I find the use on the right side rather annoying. It could take the place of the, in my opinion, unnecessary second menu button in the lower left corner. As with a computer keyboard, but not necessarily left and right shift (maybe to consider also the left-handed and vice versa?). It’s not a crucial point, but I plead for the left side and something's got to give.
The shift function has been controversially discussed here recently, with a good suggestion from @wim that I agree with:
„...why not just have a dimmed ⨁ button to the right of the last track and below the last scene?“
b. The function of the headphone icon is still unclear to me or at least it does not work for me (iOS 13.7, LK 1.8.4) as described, neither AU nor stand-alone. From the LK manual: LISTEN - determines if the midi note will be sent and heard when you touch the composer piano roll (track must be armed).
No matter if activated or not, track armed or not, I can always hear sound when I touch the vertical keyboard and I never hear sound when I touch a note.
It would be a very common and welcome feature (best if it could be turned on/off) if you could hear notes and chords when you set and move them inside the piano roll. It may be intended to be exactly that, but I can‘t make it work. User mistake or bug? And, a track should not necessarily be armed either to use that feature.
c. What are the numbers related to below the arm button? It seems these are numerous track identifiers which stick to a track in case of duplication to be able to trace its origin/source track, right?
e. Bug: duplication of a track doesn’t duplicate the Midi Input channel no matter what source selected, always resets it to 1. (iOS 13.7, LK 1.8.4, AU and stand-alone)
@sinosoidal , you guys are great, keep rockin‘ LK and the iOS scene!
As a left-handed person, I think the Shift button is placed correct on the right side 😉
@sinosoidal : I love LK and have run into a few problems. When working in the piano roll, if you drag a group of notes to the left and any move before 1.1, they are lost. It would be much better if it prevented you from dragging the selection beyond the beginning or end. (It seems that notes aren’t lost if dragging past the end, fwiw, bu I am not 100% sure).
I have a question, when recording into an empty clip to create it, is there some way to set it up so that recording doesn’t start until the host timeline starts? I can set playback up that way but not recording. I am wanting to use AUM’s pre-roll with the metronome on to record some midi but it seems like I have to manually trigger the empty clip for it to start recording. I’d like the recording to start when AUM hits 1.1
Shift on the left side gets a vote here
LK could take inspiration from Drambo. A plus sign to the right of the last track and below the last scene (as suggested by @wim), and make room for a blinking plus sign to the left of a track when the track is slightly pulled to the right, which inserts a new track to the left upon release. Same for scenes; pull a scene slightly down to insert a new scene above it.
@White said:
It was clear to me that I would get a right-handed headwind because of my statement 😬

...and slightly up to insert a new scene below.
The Shift button is used in the pianoroll editor too, so it needs to be visible in in both clips/scene view and in pianoroll editor view.
Yep, Atom does it right and this is how it should be. The fact that LK has a start/stop timing competing to AUM and does not exclusively listen to its host is confusing for me.
It would still be visible even if it was positioned on the left as I described. So then, let's move it 😉
+1
That part seems to be fine for playback. I.e. when the AUM transport hits 1.1.0, it will start LK’s transport. But that doesn’t seem to work for recording.
@sinosoidal In context with AUM and playback in general: let's say you load a project with 8 tracks but you want to play only 4 of them after the start. This doesn't seem to be possible but is quite essential. Did I miss something? I can't find a way to mark single tracks as inactive to exclude them from playback for now to punch them in later. The workaround would be to first tap all tracks you want to play and leave out the other ones, stop the thereby automatically activated LK playback, then start the AUM playback. But this is cumbersome and unacceptable for a live performance. If there is an easy way, how do you do that?
I also noticed that the on/off playback status of single tracks is stored in a project at the time of saving. Accordingly tracks are played immediately after loading if they were active during saving. I don‘t think that‘s a good idea and should be amended.
-edit- Correction after retest: the playbacks status of the tracks is not saved in the project. But if the playback is activated within LK and remains activated, every in the meantime newly loaded project is played immediately. If this is intended, and this behaviour might be helpful in some situations on closer examination, it should be possible to be switched off.
Where can I find information about how to trigger LK’s MIDI clips with MIDI?
I can trigger clips from LK’s keyboard and pads, but if I route the same MIDI notes into LK from AUM’s keyboard those notes aren’t triggering the clips. Have I misconfigured something?
I get notes hanging after pressing stop (multi channel setup in AUM), tried different synths and different channels. Sometimes it works but most of the time the last note played in a sequence just hangs on one of the channels, only way to turn it of is to go in and change preset for the synth in question.
Anyone else have this issue?
@sinosoidal
Works for me.
I’ll post a video tomorrow. For the life of me I can’t get clips to trigger from the AUM keyboard routed into LK though it will work from LK’s pads or keyboard. Input is set to LK Input.
Unrelated, it looks like the pad and keyboard pages use different octave number. C4 is note 60 on the keyboard and C3 on the pads page.
Problem solved. User error. AUM’s keyboard was set to midi channel 2..which I don’t remember having changed from channel 1, but I must have done it and forgotten.
I installed lk demo version and trying to decide if buying the matrix module or not. I don't see a way to midi map my launch pro xl (the mixer version). Not even on AUM cause I don't see launching clip controls either. Is it not supported? This is essential for my workflow.... if I don't have a way to launch clips with my controllers then I'll keep waiting for Atom2 (which I was gonna buy anyway.... I can't fool myself
