Excellent news! I had this on my to buy list but didn’t think TB did sales.

  • Interestingly, checking out the deals on various synths (pigments for instance) has got me comparing them to the internal ableton equivalents, and I’m learning lots, while finding that in many ways the internal instruments are simple to use and just as capable… editing wavetable files isn’t straightforward anywhere though, even serum can be a bit fiddly…

  • Karoryfer have a sale on. I would be interested to hear feedback from anyone who has any of the Vengeful series.

  • UJAM has a sale:

    I have to add: Reason+ has a sale :(

Yeah. They don’t want you buying a license do they?!

I will wait until they fully support apple silicon. Maybe. I might just phase reason out.

  • As someone said to me in the forums

Vital is what the cool kids nowadays use.
And this could be a real cool deal - considering the super pro version already is at $80

On iOS they never do, however there could be one on the synth. Pure speculation, but I could see the synth getting discounted to help promote it.

I only use Vital, Diva and Repro-5 on Desktop.

I don’t understand how Vital has this price model. It’s an amazing piece of software

  • @OnfraySin yes, Vital is incredible powerful. and there are already much tutorials and information to this beast. I am excited what he has up his sleeves on Friday ;)

  • Sorry for the hijack, but this section have no exposure. I want a Razor License. I can trade you vs something else (ie: others NI license). Let me know.

  • DigitalSoundFactory have a 30% off sale (coupon code BLACK). This is the company that provides the IAP sounds used by Audio Evolution Mobile. Not sure how relevant they are anymore but I remember being tempted more than once by the E-MU Proteus Pack which you can get in a few formats including soundfont/exs24:

Convinced myself to get the SoundFont version of this, though I could not find any sound demos so was a little apprehensive. First impressions are good. Big selection of instruments which sound clear despite the relatively small 460MB zipped download. No big multisampled instruments here but covers a lot of ground and loads easily into the SoundFonts app, though the plan is to run it in MTS.

Despite coming in at around £54 after discount it compares favourably against the native romplers and the sounds will be easy to move around. Thanks to @Moderndaycompiler for saying good things about this in some older posts which convinced me to give it a go.

Thanks for shout out @MisplacedDevelopment  hope you are as happy with them as I am. I think it’s a bargain myself.
These also work great in bs-16i and the SoundFonts app as well. I still own the hardware Virtuoso and proteus 2000 after all these years but now exclusively use these soundfonts. And I am happy to have proteus planet earth with all of it’s great world instruments. I must say mo-phatt gives me great fun as well as the vintage pro modules. Note: these are all the original roms from EMU and they are indeed authentic 😎
BTW, I am a big fan of MTS as well (my favorite daw on iOS)

Yes, I can see myself getting along very well with this set. It is Impressive that you still own the original kit and is high praise therefore that you are happy with the soundfonts. I think the Venn diagram intersection of people who own this and also have MTS as their favourite iOS DAW is pretty small but is now at least 2 people

I still have my original Proteus 1/XR which I expanded with a protoligic upgrade. I might try and dig it out and sample it in Logic autosampler. If I ever get time! I haven’t seen samples of the Protologic samples. Which my iPhone insists on correcting to proctologist. :-/

The protoligic upgrade was a circuit board that needed more than a simple slot in installation. It was terrifying and I thought I’d fired the proteus when I first installed it.

l still have a Windows 7 box running with Emulator X3 as it was possible to get all the original Emu soundware to run as carbon copy facsimiles of classic Emu hardware inclusive of Proteus, Mo Phat, Vintage Keys etc. Here's a link to the X2 iteration which came out a few years earlier.

    https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/emu-emulator-x2

One warning ref the digitalsoundfactory.com EMU libraries. They're static samples and don't contain any loop points and such like within the samples. This was hugely important with Proteus style hardware as it was smart loop points that enabled Proteus style hardware to deliver so many patches from a relatively small memory footprint. Plus the likes of Morpheous, Mo Phatt, Orbit and Vintage Keys had a very sophisticated synthesis engine as well as the full-featured sample playback engine (built on the heritage of Emulator hardware samplers). It's the combination of its true sample and synthesis approach that makes those classic EMU rack synthesizers sound so rich and alive. It's also why EMU rack kit still maintains a reasonable resale value.

The sound fonts seem to loop fine but I guess that is part of the sound font programming rather than as you say being built into the sample files themselves.

That’s true the extracted wav files do not include loop meta-data but the loop is definitely set in the soundfont file and when imported to BS-16i or Logic’s Sampler they loop just fine.

The sound fonts seem to loop fine but I guess that is part of the sound font programming rather than as you say being built into the sample files themselves.

When digitalsoundfactory.com first came on the scene their core offering was libraries for the Emulator X series. They were selling EMU rack synth-based sample sets at a fraction of the cost of similar sample sets from EMU themselves. Part of the quality issue came about because Emulator X2 introduced a feature that sampled hardware synths automatically. This worked really well but you obviously ended up with static samples if you didn't then tweak the samples to take advantage of the sample and synthesis engine (this involves a lot of work for multisample sets sampling at least once per octave).

The company then offered those same base sample sets for other software samplers (and as soundfonts) too. It sounds like they've since put the effort in to add loop points within the samples. And that will at least ensure that you don't end up with samples without envelopes. Matching the EMU synth engine is a more difficult task but at least you have a good starting point.

Cubase is the Stupid Deal of the Day: https://www.musiciansfriend.com/stupid?icid=210190

  • As part of Steinberg's Cyber offers, there's something worth considering if you're in the market for a desktop notation package. Dorico offers an upgrade path from their free product, Dorico SE to Dorico Elements (it needs to be registered and activated). Dorico Elements is usually £85 (inc 20% VAT), the upgrade from Dorico SE is £64 inc VAT, and the Cyber discount of 30% brings the final cost down to £51.

Dorico Elements is the full Dorico product other than your limited to 12 players (but here's another smart aspect of Dorico, those players can play multiple instruments and you get to view them those multi-instrument players, on separate staffs in Galley view (scrolling right to left, rather than a print preview in A4/Letter format). The only other difference is that you don't get the bespoke engraving aspect of Dorico but this is unimportant to all other than those working in publishing or those responsible for creating instrument sheets for a real orchestra/ensemble. And the default engraving in Dorico is super smart already so there's little need for manual tweaks anyway.

Most important of all. Buying Dorico Elements 3.5 now will entitle you to a free upgrade to Dorico Elements 4 when it's released in the new year. The benefits don't stop at the free upgrade either. Dorico v4 will be the first Steinberg product to be released that doesn't require an E-Licenser dongle as Steinberg is moving to a new dongle-free licensing system in 2022. You don't need a dongle to purchase 3.5 but you will need to use the virtual E-Licenser option which is locked to your hardware during installation.

Considering you're getting 95% of what makes the £480, full version of Dorico so good for £51, I reckon this is a decent deal. But only if you're in the market for a full flavour desktop notation package.

If you're wondering what makes Dorico so much better than Finale or Sibelius, it's that it features the plugin engine from Cubase and a piano roll that separates playback qualities from its idealised quantised rendering derived from the notation. This makes the playback in Dorico really expressive. And you're obviously free to use whatever premium Kontakt sample libraries you already make use of in your DAW (or any plugin instrument for that matter, sampler or otherwise). The idea is that you shouldn't need to take your project into a DAW to improve the quality of your output.
