I am assuming that Flowtones does not have a MIDI out option, only MIDI in , but can someone confirm that’s the case I looked in the settings but couldn’t find any option for MIDI out

Yup, it doesn’t seem to have midi out

In that case @DJB could we please have an option to completely hide the keyboard when Flowtones is used as an AUv3?
(Without the keyboard a full-screen AUv3 could show more of the available parameters reducing 'tab switching').

    Good ideas.

I also didn’t notice the sequencer randomize even though it’s in the Randomize options? Mite be user error.

Yep, the sequecer doesn’t have a checkbox for randomizing, only for resetting

  • Thanks everyone; a bunch of UI/UX updates have been implemented and the app is awaiting review (which can take a couple of days in a weekend):

    • When saving a file, Program manager will ask about replacing a previously created patch if needed
    • When saving a file followed by renaming it, the patch loaded in the synth will be renamed as well
    • Users can now select other patches after saving a patch for loading, renaming etc, with a consistent operation mode when in patch loading mode
    • Exiting the program manager via cancel will re-instate the patch in memory that was active before starting the program manager
    • Exiting the program manager via the exit cross or Ok buttons will load the (last) patch selected in the program manager
    • Added load/save buttons to quickly load and save settings using the program manager
    • iOS stand alone: settings are now stored when closing the app and retrieved when re-starting it
    • Improved audio quality for extreme PWM settings
    • New Eco mode to allow the synth to run in default, economy, and high-quality modes
    • On-screen keyboard will now automatically appear in case of a suitable aspect ratio (iPad only)
    • Patch categories will now persist when categorising, loading or saving a patch
    • Various UI tweaks and performance improvements
  • Thank you, that's a great update!

  • Awesome!!!

    Thanks for this.

One simple little feature suggestion that fits nicely with the GUI, a one shot button on the LFOs. Just above the Uni button next to the phase knob.

Edit that.. Any note on event will reset the LFO across all voices (with reset on key) . One shot doesn't make that much sense in that the LFO can be used as an envelope unless the LFO uses polyphony.

The amount of times I've thought oh that would be cool and then on reflection, no there's reasons it is like it is.

I like that it's quite focused.

  • For anyone still on the fence, here’s my first proper go with it.

This is all Flowtones apart from the drums. So much bang for your buck with this synth.

  • That was great.

Nice little tune, like that a lot. Great synth too.

  • Last week I eventually bought it and again a vote for the randomizing feature, that one is supercool. My experience: although the sound is changed drastically, the character stays the same. F.e : take a stab preset and select randomize, I got different sounds but all stabs in returns. That it sounds “different” from f.e. Zeeon, I don’t mind, it’s different enough to be a worthwhile addition to the existing iOS synths.

  • I think I prefered the modulation source window on a double click. Audio Damage uses this method and it feels a lot more instant than a long press release. Really nice to get into those modulation windows with the minimum fuss.

I get what you mean, but double click also resets the value (i don't see a way to do that in Continua) so it was conflicting with the mod source window. This approach avoids that conflict.

From an outside (but software dev) perspective, I’d think the expectation for an X control would be Cancel rather than OK?

Yeah, Double Tap and OK == Load, Cancel and X == Cancel.

Yeah that's the trade off. Personally I could give up the reset value for that super snappy modulation window, it's something I'm opening constantly, way more than resetting values (the knobs behave nicely enough for that not to be such a chore anyway). Not everyone will one agree obviously. Add to that though, double click slider values inside the modulation windows to reset to zero. Those sliders are a bit more tricksy.

  • Maybe the answer is shorten the long click a touch. I'd still prefer a double click but shaving some milliseconds off might make all the difference.

  • Is it necessary to have Library | Category listed twice in the Browers headers?

How about having a Zero/Reset button on the mod popup?

Double-tap source label (Env, LFO etc.) in mod-popup to reset the value.

That would be confusing as it's nothing to do with Modulation. Double tap to reset is a de facto standard

If you have all patches listed (across libraries and categories), there may be patches with the same name. Hence being able to see from which library or category each patch is, is quite essential.

In addition, showing the library and category allows you to sort them by category or library by clicking on the representative header sort icon.

These things become quite important if you have a lot of patches.

The odds of a rare name collision when the user select “All” is a worthy compromise vs 4 columns persistent with the same name IMO

  • @DJB i just updated to 1.0.7, and now any time i try to save a patch, it is instantly converted to sound like The Flowing Tones. So all the patches ive saved since the update are , sound-wise, copies of The Flowing Tones. Again, am I doing something wrong?

  • Nice…keyboard gone from Letterbox au 👍

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.

I'm not able to reproduce that. Could you give a step-by-step description of how to trigger that? Please include all taps and button interactions on the way, thanks!

[edit] ah found it. The default settings are accidentally loaded if you've saved a patch. Please go into the hamburger menu, and hit 'clear default settings' as a temporary workaround. We'll fix this ASAP

  • @DJB Would it be possible to add a OK/Cancel Confirmation step when pressing “Delete” in the patch browser please?

  • edited August 2021

@DJB Sometimes I’m able to scroll the Category list sideways in the patch browser (this is from standalone):
