  • Yay, It’s out and I just got it :)

    Noticed 3 ’small’ things.

Add left/right arrows to either side of the preset name to browse thru the presets without going in to the preset browser. (The browser already has up & down buttons so the core runctionality is already there).

When editing a preset just opening the preset browser without selecting a preset ’overrwites’ the currently selected preset, undo is needed to revert back to the preset that one was editing but the preset name has already changed?!

(For example, select the ’Default’ preset from the templates, tweakt a bit open the preset browser, close it and the preset in the browser is selected).

Seems like the preset browser always selects the ’The Flowing Tones’ preset when opening & closing the preset browser without actually selecting a preset?!

Oh and 3rd love the sounds it produces :sunglasses:

This is already shaping up to be a favourite…

    Well Done!

  • Bought on pc. Thanks so much🤟

  • whelp. i def do not need this, but i got it. The randomizer is great, worth buying for even just that.

  • I can confirm the bug where the Flowing Tones preset gets chosen when simply opening the browser without choosing anything. I haven't tried to save any patches yet, I want to read the manual first.

I am enjoying creating sounds on this synth a lot this evening. I think the filters sound great. The resonance is sweet, some softsynths have harsh resonance that bothers my ears, but this sounds good.

There are so many possibilities but the UI is clean and simple and fun. I'll need to read the manual to fully understand the relationship between vco 1 & 2 and parts 1 & 2, though. But most everything else is making sense to me.

This is going to be my main synth, I'm going to spend my time learning this one. I'm really happy I bought this.

  • Wow, this is a great synth! And the sequence presets are bangin

  • This synth sounds amazing! I feel like so many flavors are neatly packed into one instrument. At first I was confused by the lack of a simple saw waveform, but then I realised I can get it by selecting any saw full waveform and turning the PWM knob all the way up.

Also, there are a lot of tabs which I though would put me off, but the interface is actually very well organized so tabs don’t bother me at all.

I wish playing the on screen keyboard wouldn’t close the modulation source pop-ups. This is not a problem when using a midi keyboard though.

The one thing that I don’t see is oscillator sync, everything else I could think of (and more) is already there. Congrats on a great release @DJB !

Another excellent app by TB. Instabought to once again have my TB collection complete. I think I'll work on getting the desktop versions next.

I can confirm the preset bug that Samu mentioned. Was the first thing I noticed but realized I hadn't restarted my devices yet.

Just restarted and if you select a preset and exit the browser by tapping to x, no matter what preset you're currently on, it goes back to the Flowing Tones, but once you reopen the preset browser it shows whatever preset you clicked last even though it's the flowing tones default patch.

Other than that, this thing is solid!

    iPhone 11 iOS 14.7.1
    iPad Air 3 iPadOS 14.7.1

  • Insta buy for me as all tone booster plugins! Thanks for bring us top quality FX to iOS.
Flowtones is a nice synth, but there are a few important omissions IMO:

    -oscillator sync
    -filter FM (from VCOs)
    -LFO key tracking
-option for the LFOs to be polyphonic or global (Mono)
-Keyboard (note) as a modulation source for most parameters (ADSR, PWM, noise level, Osc level,…)
    -sequencer as a modulation source
-delay time modulation (so we can f.e. have tape style echoes)
    -reordering the FX chain

Hope you can take a look @DJB !

    Thanks.

Same here. It just all feels right - things are where they should be, and it sounds fantastic to me.

  • What a nice surprise to wake up to a new synth app. Looks and sounds fab cheers @DJB

Do not close the browser by tapping the 'X', but double-click on the preset you want to select. This is the way it works. It was strange for first but finally I like the idea.

Thanks; there seems to be a small bug in the preset browser but only in specific use cases (if you've opened it multiple times and depending on whether you close it with 'x', 'cancel', or 'ok'). We'll fix this asap.

  • Time to download the manual and have a good read-thru, mostly likely a few times until it 'sticks'.
I did notice some presets are quite heavy on the CPU on my ancient iPad Air 2 :sunglasses:

  • @DJB On the iPhone / iPad (in stand-alone) the lower part of the keyboard is a bit 'unresponsive'.

This is most likely caused by iOS and its 'swipe gestures' to bring up the dock.
The issue can be avoided by enabling what is called 'edge protection'.

Add Code below to your UIViewController

    -(UIRectEdge)preferredScreenEdgesDeferringSystemGestures
    {
    return UIRectEdgeAll;
    }

This is not an issue in the AUv3 when the host has edge protection enabled (which most hosts have).

I do have one UI suggestion.

The 'double tap' to reset a parameter to its default value works fine but 'conflicts' with the tap to bring up the modulation menu.

So when doing a double-tap to reset a value the menu stays open for knobs that have it.

Suggestion here is to not show the menu on double-tap, or add a delay (tap'n'hold') to show the menu.

Take Care & Thanks for an awesome synth :)
    /Samuel

  • @DJB for those of us who would like to create preset banks for the community, would it be possible to implement the import/export of preset banks so that an entire bank can be saved and then imported in one go?

But if I'm working on a patch and open the browser by mistake, let's say I want to save the patch but forgot that option is in the hamburger menu, if I choose another preset I will lose my patch. If I close the browser without choosing a preset I don't return to the patch I was creating, I return to Flowing Tones. It doesn't seem to matter how I close the browser. Whatever I do, if I open the browser I lose what I'm creating.

Maybe I am using a preset and I decide to search for a different sound. I open the browser but change my mind, now I'm back to Flowing Tones and I have to find and reload the original preset.

This is unexpected behavior, I've never encountered a synth that changes presets whether I want it to or not because I opened the browser. I would expect that it would only change if I choose another preset. Is there an approach to not selecting a new preset that I am missing? I hope so. I am really enjoying this synth, even if this behavior persists I'll use and like it but I'm starting to hate the sound of the Flowing Tones preset haha.

  • Also, I can't find much information about the browser in the manual. Does anyone know how to delete a category name that I created myself? I misspelled sequence now I have an extra category called squence.

  • @DJB Maybe it's by design but there's one aspect in the synthesis engine I'm not particularly fond of.

When modulating the pitch with a square-wave LFO at slower speeds the pitch 'glides' between the hi & lo values?!
(Maybe the aliasing interpolations got taken a bit too far where they actually start to affect basic functionality?)

The 'punch' feature for the oscillators is nice but could be enhanced by optionally disabling the 'glide', ie. hold for example +x for x ms and then set to 0.(Think if this like rapidly playing C then D or F then G).

As for other LFO wave-shapes a 'stepped triangle' could be handy as well as a 'one shot' mode?
(It could then be used as an additional AD envelope depending on the shape and phase).

Also setting the delay time to specific values is pretty tricky (like 1/8d).
Have to do it by ear or type in 0.750 or something similar.

Sorry for being picky but over all I like the synth and will explore it further :sunglasses:
    /Samuel

As I wrote above, it's a bug and we'll fix it ASAP such that if you hit cancel, you get the expected behaviour as going back to the program you had going before opening the browser.

Simply move the presets to the new category using the categorise button; when there is nothing left in the misspelled category it will disappear automatically.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.

And I guess the X in the window will also be the same as 'Cancel' so there's a logical way to exit out of the browser without making a selection? (And Ok = Cancel if no new other preset was selected).

It does sound really good, still going thru all the presets :sunglasses:

Thank you for your reply. I did empty the category but the category name didn't disappear from the list. I finally uninstalled/reinstalled the synth since I had only created a few patches so far.

Yes this would definitely be an advantage. I was thinking this myself on my first session with the app.

I love it, but I’ve noticed one issue particularly when twiddling and sound designing. In standalone, not every time but a decent amount when adjusting a knob or parameter and holding down the keys at the same time, the keys and sound just cutout, and you have to repress them. This is a definite issue, but I’m sure TB will handle it. I’m on iOS 14.7.2 I think, the most current one. Ipad 6.

Yes - reported already, just with the built in keyboard.

  • @jakoB_haQ will doing a live-stream of TB Flow Tones later this evening!

I'll there in the chat as usual...
Don't know if @DJB will be able to join, would be kinda nice though ;)

    Cheers!

If the synth sounds so good then why aren’t y’all sharing your joy? No examples of the goodness that you’d share?

Yeah, I'd love to hear some of the sounds. The ones on TBs website aren't all that impressive imho...

1st very quick impressions: Typical ToneBoosters interface - well laid out and pretty easy to navigate. The built in patches show the range of sounds the synth can create and the randomisation is very interesting - the only issue I've seen so far (apart from some that have already been mentioned) is that the sequence doesn't change when I hit randomise - the sequence check box is selected, so should the notes in the sequence change?

EDIT: don't mind me, I'm being a numpty. RTFM - the sequencer and the master EQ can't be randomised - the left column (where their check boxes are) is for resetting the parameters - the right is for randomisation...👍

It was only released a few hours ago. I guess we're all still playing with it ...
