@DJB Another request, if you please. I have found a core set of sounds I want to tag/mark so I can find them faster. Could you integrate some kind of “Star” or “Favorite” function for users?

This becomes even more important when playing live and being able to jump to an ordered playlist of patches.

Would like this to work as standalone and as AUv3.

As examples, I find the Yonac synths and the SynthMaster synths have generally good implementations to see as reference.

    Thanks.

Is the UI standard toneboosters standard sizing?

It’s pretty fiddly if that’s what you mean. Not unusable though but obviously they’ve got a lot to fit on a small screen.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • @DJB Is there any reason the volume of each osc is limited to -40db? When using a lot of drive on the filters and bitcrushing/distortion I’ve already found it to be a quite limiting. It also seems like there is no way to mute one vco but still use it to modulate the other. Would be useful to be able to fully mute with the volume on each osc

Also, would it be possible to open up some of the delay and reverb parameters to the modulation matrix in the future?

Loving this thing so far though, super slick interface and sounds unique!

I've got dRambo I don't need to buy anything.

    I'm simply curious.

I always wonder how favourite marking is not a universally default feature of every synth out there (because it, perplexingly, isn't). It seems such a basic, essential concept to me. I may totally be in the minority with this position, but I just can't imagine why someone wouldn't want this feature.

Honestly? I don't love it. It's very digital-sounding to me. This is just me going on the presets, but I don't find anything that grabs me. I'm a Toneboosters fan; I have everything they put out, but this feels thin and needly.

But if you create ravey stuff, who knows? Me, I want everything to sound like either "Autobahn" or a broken Aphex synth. Not really in the market for ANY clean "stab" sounds ever.

  • A first update (v1.0.4) is awaiting review in the App Store which should hopefully resolve some of the minor UX issues people have been reporting:

    • Modulation popup menu now requires a long tap or right mouse click to bring up; double tap to reset a slider to its default setting
    • Resolved issue with reverting to default patch when opening the preset browser without selecting anything
    • You can now edit controls while playing on the on-screen keyboard without notes being cut off
    • Improved LFO waveforms and transition speed for waveforms with steep transitions like square waves
    • Improved behaviour for legato keyboard slides
    • Resolved some color theme issues in the preset browser

To me, I wouldn’t call the oscs digital sounding, but they’re def not analog sounding either. But it’s so difficult to capture in words what makes the tone of one osc different than another. The best I can do for this one is neither the square nor the saw have any “bite” to them. They sound very soft, even with the filter off or all the way open. Like when making a sustained keys or patch sound, normally you’re almost immediately reaching for the cutoff to tame things a bit. Upon first opening this one, I did a classic PWM pad to start and wanted to see what happened if I opened the filter a little more. Turns out the filter wasn’t even engaged.

This is a very strange sounding synth to me, one that exists in its own little void. It’s definitely unique, but for what I’m looking for, not for me at all.

And I have to be blunt on this one, because it’s my biggest disappointment after using their dual filter app. The resonance, while stepping smoothly and maintaining the voleme of the osc, just sounds bad.

Please see my reply about a page back on this. Happy to investigate if we can add more waveforms in the oscillator algorithms that provide the character you are looking for; it would be of great help if you could specify more concretely what the waveforms are missing (for example oscilloscope plots) or refer to another synth that is exactly what you miss with Flowtones. Thanks!

I will try my best and think on it some more! Like I said, it’s a very difficult thing to describe in words. So yes, perhaps I’ll record a few dry examples of the other VAs.

That would be awesome! If it's more convenient, pointing us to a specific synth's waveforms should do the trick as well.

Switch "strange" to "unique", and "void" to "niche" and I'll mostly agree!

Bravo to @DJB for finding a unique sound in a crowded market.

  • THIS. I’ll always take more detailed notes elsewhere, but a simple tagging (or at least favoriting) system should be built into any digital presets manager. Of course, devs have lots to do to get their app off the ground- so I get it.

Just for the halibut, I recorded a brief song fragment using the slightly stabby horns in Flowtones. I like what i’m getting so far, but to be honest, some of the adjustments I’m making to the patches don’t seem to be doing anything sometimes. I imagine once I get a better handle on the functions I’ll know better what to adjust.

Did you see the little "lightening bolt" icon to the left of the "Q" knob?
Engaging that seems to "light up" the filter resonance.

Also. Did you discover that turning the PWM all the way to the right is where the basic saw wave is?

For basic sustaining analog type patches, I find I need to open up the sustain in the VCA all the way too.

  • Oh, boy. Can’t wait until the file saving glitch is fixed. I’ve come up with several great sounding patches which were then wiped out as I tried to save them. It’s a bit aggravating right now.

Those patches will still get saved. It's just that your current patch is modified after saving. The fix is awaiting Apple approval so let's hope get's out soon!

  • The 12db lowpass x4 octave is pretty wicked.

Is it because it doesn’t have the ‘slop’ and ‘vintage’ properties of something like Zeeon or Model D? FT sounds cleaner and more digital to those sorts of synth to me, but it’s refreshing tbh as we have so many VA options that sounds like that.
