WTF Will Smith?

With all the shit going on, what do we need? We need The Fresh Prince taking us back seventy years. To a time when strong women couldn’t defend themselves. To a time when a man responds with violence to his besmirched sense of “honor”. To a time when Hollywood sycophantism covered up all manner of poor moral behavior.

But we can be proud of Will for upholding our 21st century values of “meism” and refusal to apologize to the victim. I always liked Smith's acting, but seeing this incredible display of premeditated violence on a public stage… when most of the world is decrying it…. the bullying self entitlement of a superstar to defend a powerful woman who has joked about her nonetheless beautiful baldness…. because she is HIS wife and he must protect his own…. Not to mention his hubris in saying “I am a River unto my people”. Well, all I can say is WTF. Like this is what the world needs from it’s clay footed “heroes “.

But, OTOH, kudos to Chris Rock for keeping his cool, not pressing charges, and carrying on in good spirit. It's hard to say whether this has hurt the failing Oscars. But, going by the crowd that rushed to comfort Smith, leaving the victim in the breach… we’ll, it couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch.

(People who have seen Chris's HBO specials will probably remember the joke in the meme :) )

I would like to know what Jada thinks. I think, from her face at the time of the joke, that she felt it was hurtful, but I'm just trying to infer from her body language/expression. As a balding guy, I'm sort of used to bald jokes, but I think for women it might be a lot more of a touchy subject. Add to all that the possible bad feelings between Chris Rock and the Smiths from past jabs.

I understand the anger behind Will's actions, but I can't condone the violence. I don't think he would have done the same thing if it had been The Rock up there making that joke.

I also have to think that Will may be a role model to a lot of young men who will see this. What is he teaching them with his actions and later his self justifications?

  • The oscars were on last night? :D

  • They turned the camera on Will just after the joke and he was laughing really hard while his wife Jada rolled her eyes and was obviously offended.

I suspect Will looked over at his wife to gauge his reaction and saw her looking at him for laughing and he thought "Oh fuck. I'm in big trouble." Then couple dynamics took over and Will switched to being the protector of his wife's sensitivities. I doubt he will ever apologize for his over reaction.

I hope a video of his transition from good natured laugh to incensed outrage surfaces at some point. I think Jada might have something to admit... as a power couple they are Hollywood Royalty and role models for many ambitious black children. Will is of the people and Jada is a entitled Princess, IMHO. Will later claimed he was protecting someone he loves so he implied Jada needed and wanted this reaction to the joke.

I'm a huge Chris Rock and Will Smith fan so I think it's between them to manage the aftermath. Not much of a Jada Pinkett-Smith fan.

I expect Trevor Noah to dedicate a "Daily Show" episode to unpacking this event. He's a master at translating between cultures.

I saw a tweet from a female black comedian that claims Will Smith would only raise his hand to Chris Rock because most black comedians would have pushed back in like manner.

Chris Rock's reaction was truly epic: "Turn the other cheek" and don't resort to violence. He was bullied as a kid. I doubt Will Smith was so they are predisposed to different approaches to "disrespect".

Many on twitter are outraged that the audience didn't stop the show or leave or demand the police take Will Smith out for assault.

If Will Smith wanted to seriously injure Chris Rock he would have made him unable to continue. Chris was shocked but not seriously injured.

I found Will Smith's acceptance speech moving and illustrative of his desire to be a good human being and a role model for his people coming off his role as Serena and Venus Williams' Father in King Richard. I think that role hit Will in his core with how he's been leading his life. There's a scene in the movie where Richard Williams is beaten while defending his daughters honor in Compton. I think that role has shaped his view on what a man does and will sacrifice for his family and those he loves.

  • One could say that Chris Rock has...wait for it..."fresh prints" on his face! 🤣🤣🤣

But in seriousness, the situation was so dumb. I don't watch the Oscars anymore, because whether I agree with their stances on issues or not, I don't need the moral grandstanding from a bunch of rich overpaid people who are out of touch with reality.

Some people think it was staged. I don’t, but if it was, I think will totally deserved that oscar.
But I’m like @McM: “the oscars were yesterday?”

  • He knew 35 years ago…

  • Who cares? Answer: No one.

  • How can he attack Chris Rock without consequences?
They even gave this clown an Oscar a few minutes later.

  • Yeah I’m sorry, no matter how off colour a joke might be, we can’t start assaulting comedians.

  • Chris Rock handled it like a pro good for him. Was it a dumb joke in poor taste? Probably. Did it warrant violence and the screaming of profanities from across the room at an event that’s supposed to be classy? Not a chance. Will Smith disgraced himself. And then he wins and starts crying as though he and the team cured cancer and saved the third world. You made a movie dude. Chill.

First thanks for labeling off topic. Second this was no way staged. Third literally Can’t believe He did that then talked about love and peace in his speech, Total bs. He has serious issues about something, he really needs to see someone if he thinks that’s acceptable behavior. I found out today that they actually have an “open marriage” news to me, but Im guessing there’s some type of inferiority complex, or anger issue there. Not normal.

I saw several tweets that were really spot on about abuse, group mentality, etc. reading some of the many responses was very interesting.

As far as Rock, I can’t believe he kept his composure either, I only saw the repeats, but i kept thinking what if he freaking went at him and they brawled right there on stage… however I then remembered all the fight training will has probably had, he was Ali, action movies, etc… and the size difference. So maybe Part composure, Part, Big Willy Style will probably kill me. For me it has definitely tainted his WS acting. I try not to gauge people on one thing but dam that was so messed up.

Congrats to questlove for taking home an Oscar for a doc.

Johnny Greenwood is an amazing composer.

    Peace I’m outta here. Lol.

    Totally.

The utter blindness to his own hypocrisy is puke worthy. Lol.

  • I think the next Chris Rock special should be quite entertaining.

  • Interesting article, thanks.

  • Maybe I’m being cynical, but…with talk in recent years of the Oscars ceremony losing audiences year over year…this would be just the thing it needed to improve viewership…

Ha! Who's going to sit through a couple of hours of that snooze fest in the hope of maybe thirty seconds of entertainment? Maybe if they scheduled in some celebrity MMA fighting. But short of that, no way.

  • I don’t recall anyone ever gobsmacking Don Rickles. This is the age of US political violence and it is overflowing. Makes me think Smith might be… you know… one of them. The hypocrisy, macho chauvinism and narcissism is stunning. So many emperors, so little clothing.

I don't get it - half of those people pictured weren't even in attendance at the oscars this year...???

It’s not like Chris Rock’s brand of humor is unknown to the audience there, either…
