Yeah but I can open up Audanika in split screen and play the Note instruments with it now 😀

Ooh, that sounds like a good idea, might reinstall, thanks.

  • I’m a bit befuddled by the reception with this app sometimes. Personally I think it’s great, but I see lots of disappointment with it too. Just kinda surprised me.

It’s one of my favourite apps. I do hope the midi implementation is improved though!

I think people want a free version of Ableton Suite on their iPads, and are whining because this isn’t it.

Plenty of iPad-using Ableton owners are just quietly using it, I suspect.

That’s kind of how it seems. Which is a shame because it’s a really cool app they’ve made. Would love to see them bring an Ableton DAW variation to iOS but Note is super fun.

Would def be nice to have pitch/mod wheel support.

I bought note with the hope, it would be useful to me, so far it hasn‘t, but I‘m not whining. I still see great promise there and it‘s always good to throw some money at them, they know, what to do with it;).

I have suite and love ableton in general for example because of the flexible and easy routing of midi and audio between tracks, which is just the same in the very generous free lite version (although please ableton make it possible to get more than one midi channel out of one vst).

Those features I rather find in something like Drambo on iOS. If ableton somehow added MPE to note as I heard speculating about, now that might make me use it a lot.

  • The MIDI-in was a huge improvement for me. That said, I will admit to wondering why Note isn’t AUv3 or AB3 compatible at least for MIDI-in. It would make the process cleaner in my opinion.

The method I have found working best is to open Audiobus and place an app like Progressions into a MIDI input slot, then set the MIDI output slot to virtual MIDI bridge. Then I open a MIDI-in connection with Audiobus on the Note app. It works, but still feels a bit clunky to have to go between apps anytime something needs troubleshooting rather than running it all from the Audiobus interface.

For context, I have Ableton Suite and use desktop as my primary production platform. I want to use Note to sketch ideas on the go, and MIDI-in makes that way more practical since I’m not very good at tapping MIDI notes into an app. I’m personally not looking for full Ableton Live on my iPad (I have a base iPad so I can’t imagine it running well for me even if it were available) and agree that Note was not created or sold for that purpose.

Bottom line for me: MIDI-in is a huge plus for my situation, and I hope a AU3 and/or AB3 implementation is in the works to further refine this functionality.

The reason it isn’t an AUv3 is that it is intended as a simple standalone , easy to use companion to Ableton Live — a place to work up ideas on the go to finish later in Live.

Making it AUv3 would add significantly to development time (and expense) without significantly improving its primary focus.

That is fair. I am not a developer so I don’t know how much additional work goes into making an app AUv3. If there were a way to make Note run directly in Audiobus, even just for the limited purpose of MIDI-in, without needing to use the virtual bridge workaround, it would be amazing. But I get that a $6.99 app can’t be all things to all people. It’s still a good app, I just have my dreams.

  • Is there a way to pan the tracks?

  • I agree AUV3 would be a great addition, but as others have said, that doesn’t seem to be what they’re going for. I personally really like it just as a standalone groovebox/sampler. I don’t have a desktop to use Ableton and would love if they made a port to iOS, but for now I’m happy with Note.

Still one of the very few apps with auto record/retroactive record that automatically detects the tempo and such. And I believe it’s been confirmed this will be developed further in the future, unless I’m mistaken. In Dawnbeat it’s all manual. Endlesss has that retroactive looper thing which is pretty good, but I find it less fluid than Note. Features like that, that make recording and composing more easy, fun and immediate are hard to come by, and I’m always looking.

  • @sonorafilms said:

No, I think the intention is to have people sketch ideas in Ableton Note then open the ideas in Ableton to mix, pan..add more tracks of effects, etc.

I can completely do without panning because I have Ableton Live suite, so everything I do in Note gets sent to my laptop when I feel like I have something worth taking to the next level, I do wish Note had pitch bend, mod wheel and sustain pedal support but just having support for midi controllers is a huge leap forward for me for now.

I don't really get why people don't understand this. Notes purpose is two fold:

    1. To enhance the experience of current Ableton Live users. It gives them another tool to capture ideas anywhere they are and then shove them into Live when they get the chance. It gives a current Live user yet another reason to say Note is great, maybe I should continue using it instead of jumping to insert other DAW here

    2. As a gateway drug into the Ableton Live ecosystem. They WANT you to buy Ableton Live:

They sell a single copy of Ableton Standard from somebody buying a 6 dollar app and that 6 dollars earned them a %7500 upside! Why would they build an app that integrated in an ecosystem that did not help them sell the thing that makes them the most money?

If you were only interested in using Note in only the iOS ecosystem, and never moving to Ableton, then you are not their target audience and they don't (and honestly shouldn't ) really care if you like it or not. The iOS nation has soooo many apps that they can use to do iOS music. Like...the current options are literally endless. That's awesome!! But the most Ableton makes out of that is 6 bucks. We already have dev's talking about how impossible it is to make any money at the sport of iOS music app development. Do you really think Ableton, which makes millions of dollars off of desktop software is looking for a way to make not many thousands of dollars off of an iOS app? It makes no financial sense for them to do so.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Again, it's just one of hundreds of iOS music apps. There are so many other apps that do more integrated solutions to the iOS platform. Maybe some other apps will copy some of the Note features like "midi capture" and it will benefit the ecosystem.

As an Ableton Live user myself, the only thing I think about when I use Note is:

    1. I hope this little snippet grows into something greater when I pull it up in Live and start working on it
    2. Ohhh, this feature idea would enhance that workflow.

As usual I do everything the other way around - I already had Live 10 Suite, but as Note isn’t compatible with older versions, I upgraded to v11.

But I still haven’t bought Note.

To be fair, I wanted the new v11 devices and AUv3 support too, but I was hoping for a bit more MIDI editing functionality updates in Note, and to be able to switch off the weird ‘always on’ recording thing, which really doesn’t sit well with me.

    I can wait.

And while the devices in Note look deceptively simple , there’s actually a lot going on under the hood. When you open a Note project and see what’s really going on with the wavetable synth in Ableton Suite you appreciate Note even more so. I think a lot of ppl who don’t use Ableton desktop software , especially the suite would be really surprised. I wouldn’t be upset with a couple more features but I think too many features would kind of ruin it. Midi controller support was the one I was waiting for, now I can sit outside with my IPad and Microkey Air and really get some ideas going.

I dunno - I should be! I use Live exclusively - despite having most other desktop DAW’s, but the way I record MIDI, and edit it in Live, doesn’t match what’s available in Note.

Live has a bog-standard MIDI editor. If Note provided that option, as well as the ‘always on’ version, and better editing tools, I’d buy it!

I understand it’s meant to be a sketch pad, but following the same logic you could also remove the volume faders. I always create some separation with panning while I’m sketching ideas.
It’s like adding a reverb or tweaking the parches even though you know those tweaks aren’t set in stone

im pretty sure they will add panning in the future. Even if it ends up having to be the utility device as a fX option.

having pan on the channel strip makes the most sense of course...

Yep. I don’t have a desktop or use Ableton but I can even appreciate Note for what it is: a fun sketch pad. Or even a way to make quick loops to export and chop elsewhere (on my iPad). Or screen record entire jams and process them in Cubasis. Or make entire sketches and process them elsewhere. For $6 I think it adds a lot to just an iOS experience. People get caught up in wanting every app to do everything, but that’s just not feasible.

  • How are people using the midi in features with other apps?

I messed around with MelodyBud yesterday when I discovered the Note update, but no dice in getting the midi into a track. AB3 support would be nice, but what are current best practices?

I open Audanika in split screen and configure the midi in both apps. I don’t think Note shows up in Audanika as a receiver but Audanika shows up in Note as a sender. So you just have to do it old school style manually. I’m not sure if AUV3 apps will work

AUM shows up in Note so AUv3 midi fx can be routed to AUM and used to play note. Just tried it with Rosetta bassline and it worked great!

Note can receive input from any midi hardware or virtual midi output port. Set up your MIDI apps to send midi to their virtual output ports and select that as a source in Ableton Note. Note doesn't publish a virtual midi in port.
