Is there a midi implementation chart for ableton note ? I googled and couldn't find it.

In particular, it would be good if I can find a CC or a note which will trigger the 'capture' button (if that's what it's called) from a midi controller.

I don't think there is, there isn't even pitch bend

  • edited May 2023

I'm pretty optimistic the baked in pitch/mod midi control will be added to note.... when... who knows...

what is nice is the app seems very stable now.

The reason it isn’t an AUv3 is that it is intended as a simple standalone , easy to use companion to Ableton Live — a place to work up ideas on the go to finish later in Live.

Making it AUv3 would add significantly to development time (and expense) without significantly improving its primary focus.

... I think the intention is to have people sketch ideas in Ableton Note then open the ideas in Ableton to mix, pan..add more tracks of effects, etc.

I don't really get why people don't understand this. Notes purpose is two fold:

    1. To enhance the experience of current Ableton Live users. It gives them another tool to capture ideas anywhere they are and then shove them into Live when they get the chance. It gives a current Live user yet another reason to say Note is great, maybe I should continue using it instead of jumping to insert other DAW here

    2. As a gateway drug into the Ableton Live ecosystem. They WANT you to buy Ableton Live:

They sell a single copy of Ableton Standard from somebody buying a 6 dollar app and that 6 dollars earned them a %7500 upside! Why would they build an app that integrated in an ecosystem that did not help them sell the thing that makes them the most money?

If you were only interested in using Note in only the iOS ecosystem, and never moving to Ableton, then you are not their target audience and they don't (and honestly shouldn't ) really care if you like it or not. The iOS nation has soooo many apps that they can use to do iOS music. Like...the current options are literally endless. That's awesome!! But the most Ableton makes out of that is 6 bucks. We already have dev's talking about how impossible it is to make any money at the sport of iOS music app development. Do you really think Ableton, which makes millions of dollars off of desktop software is looking for a way to make not many thousands of dollars off of an iOS app? It makes no financial sense for them to do so.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Again, it's just one of hundreds of iOS music apps. There are so many other apps that do more integrated solutions to the iOS platform. Maybe some other apps will copy some of the Note features like "midi capture" and it will benefit the ecosystem.

As an Ableton Live user myself, the only thing I think about when I use Note is:

    1. I hope this little snippet grows into something greater when I pull it up in Live and start working on it
    2. Ohhh, this feature idea would enhance that workflow.

I think this undervalues the quality of the synths & top notch presets with really good MPE ‘style’ behaviours gliding and sliding fingers on the touch screen. I’d love to be able to load the simplified easy access collection of ‘best of’ presets and use it on the iPad and run it with all my apps and fx, like sugar bytes

I don’t see why they couldn’t sell their instruments and fx on iOS for more, like Korg Gadget or Roland Zenbeats

The Ableton style guis would translate well too

  • Decent update.

Can finally save user presets. 🙂

  • Just saw that! Note and Drambo both got some cool updates on the same day, lots to play with now.

You can sequence one ableton note instrument from drambo 😅

  • you have drift on Ableton note now, and you have preset saving. basic browser to delete user samples/presets.

midi inputs devices are now remembered.

And you can load your entire note set in Ableton Live as is. Or Push 3 standalone as is. Just by saving it to the cloud.

    By design!

Ableton don't care about drambo :)

Drift is the real news, I hope the ability to share presets in live to note comes soon enough

I don’t use Ableton and I’m iOS only in general but I love Note for what it is. If you’re not an ableton or desktop user it’s still a very fun and somewhat powerful standalone groovebox. And you can record and export to master elsewhere. That’s enough for me considering it was $5.

  • Having Drift in Note just took my Ableton game up a notch. As a Live user, I'm super happy for all the progress being made with Note. It's an absolute bargain for $5, no subscription.

I don’t even have or use Ableton and I feel like it’s well worth the $5 even for me.

  • Is there any way to tell which presets are based on Drift?

I’m curious about this myself. If you find out let me know lol

  • Still no support for odd time signatures?! Why is this missing from so many great apps - is it hard to implement in iOS?
I realize I’m probably in the minority for wishing it had support for it, but writing music and being locked to only use 4/4 feels so limiting 🥺

I think, you see it after you open a preset, where samplebased instruments have a little blue waveform-icon, I think drift-presets have a green split sinewave. Doing this from memory, not entirely sure, could definitely be wrong.

I think it's a pity, there are no drift-presets in the templates section.

    Thanks, I’ll try that!

They have a different icon once you load them but not in the preset list afaik

Because most people use 4/4 and this is a minimal app so they had to cut corners

I favorited some drift presets because they are hard to find:

    Fluttering north
    Moody fanfare
    Corral keys

Oh, i could also save them as presets as (drift) to search for them later

    List of drift bass:

It definitely limits what I do and the kind of music I make with the app, but I’m still happy with it overall. Would love different time signatures eventually though.

Believe it was stated somewhere a while back that different time signatures were on the roadmap, potentially by the end of this year if I recall correctly

  • Ableton never gives timeframes for new features, so I wouldn't get too excited yet.

Cool thanks! I’m curious how far they’re gonna take this app. Obviously it’s fine in it’s current state but if they’re interested, there’s a lot of potential there.

  • I am going to toot @echoopera 's horn here and link a video that Matt Sieren retweeted (re-X'd?) on X (I believe he's the product manager for Note). You are really good at music stuff Mr Opera! Always creative and lovely

  • Thank you @drez truly appreciate the plug and encouragement 🙏🏼🎚️

  • Quietly Ableton Note just gets better and better. Looking forward to the next update ;-)

  • One thing from Matt that should make audiob.us’ers happy…
