  • There are probably just 2-3 plugin which are almost always included in every single track I make and one of them is ODC.

  • Grind is free (discontinued) but also seems broken. Preset menu doesn’t consistently respond for me, algorithm, filter and shaper buttons are all totally unresponsive all the time. See, sometimes cheap (I bought this back when it wasn’t free), comes at a price lol

To be fair, I think when they made it free it was because they’d made it unsupported. But still annoying if you’ve paid for it.

Same. I didn’t get it until it was free and figured since they said it was no longer getting updated there would be issues but it does kinda suck not being able to dive into all that nastiness lol

Sure, I read online that it was made free because they'd stopped supporting it. Anyway, I think Bleass Fusion is probably a more interesting modulated distortion than this is, so not really that much of a biggie. Wonder of it was still working when they stopped supporting it...

  • I think it was iOS 16 that broke it, but I’m not sure as I don’t have anything running 15 to test with.

Lol “hey boss Grind isn’t working, we need to work on an update to fix it, right?”

“Nah let’s just make it free and forget it exists” 😆

I like grind though. It works now as a set it and forget it basic distortion though I rarely use it. BYOD, Saturn 2, Lo-Fi from Nembrini, and now Fusion are my usual go-tos. And Shaper 2 of course.

    Running fine on iPadOS 15.5

That is sad. I loved that app. Now we have Crushstation and the new Bleass app, but Grind has its own sound that I really liked for trashing up a channel.

    Right?!

I guess this is the point where someone jumps in and says something about the devs making a cost-benefit analysis and deciding it wasn't worth maintaining relative to the low number of sales. Of so though, makes me wonder what will happen their other apps. They already got a godawful rep some years ago for churning out a bunch of modular gear and then changing their mind and dropping all support for them. There are quite heated Threads about it on gearspace going into the ins and outs with views from both sides.

It’s a shame. I love their apps in general, especially considering they were always on iPhone too. Filterstation 2 with its envelope followers is amazing, replicant 2 is great, etc.

Then Replicant 3 which worked great on iPhone in the beta, was released without iPhone support. I understand their decision, it just unfortunately means I don’t want their apps any more. I jam on my iPhone every day so need these sorts of apps available in the experimental stage.

    Thank god for moogerfooger

  • I had a grand design plan to buy the Quanta and Continua desktop version, but that ship sailed away after their decision to not support iOS with Quanta2. 🤔

There are too many synths out there, so I don't want to risk buying Continua either. When I need that magical sound, iOS counterparts are more than enough. They are working with LP4iOS just fine.

Oof yeah I wasn’t a part of that debacle but noise of it echoed throughout music forums everywhere it seems 😂 they make some amazing app but boy have they had some missteps on the public side of things.

I never bought Continua. It’s one of the few I don’t have from them but I do love Quanta. It’s got a very distinct sound to other granular synths on iOS, but only you can decide if it’s worth it to you. Shame we didn’t get Quanta2 though.

I’m on 16.5.1(c) and it seems fine bar the preset saving, which just sits there and does nothing. All the knobs seem to work etc.

It’s not something I’d use a whole lot, TBH, and having got it when it went free just to try it out, I’m now a tad reluctant to get too into it, knowing it has a limited shelf life.

That said, a project using dead or dying apps has its attractions… 🤔

Dead, dying or relatively unknown apps are the closest we have to the kind of gear Hainbach makes vids about and that everyone lusts after 😂. If you want to stand out in the ios world, just use apps that are more than a few months old. That pretty much counts as vintage on ABF lol

  • Shaper 2 can be a good replacement for grind, I only have shaper 1, but I always liked it more then grind.

  • I do have a fondness for the D&Dying apps. I'm (very slowly) putting together some Noise banks for a couple of my fave near-death (acccording to the doomsayers) noisemakers. (Speaking of two apps that appear headed for the long nap, Hexaglyphics run through CuSpN = wonderful.)

Abandoned structures in the middle of nowhere, or outdated machinery and technology cast a spell of fascination over me too, so maybe there's a connection. What gives things beauty, and what makes life precious (if it is) is very much tied to the fact that those things are as ephemeral and fleeting as the foam on a wave.

Another way I've thought about it. Some people refuse to buy an app that is IAA and long-ignored by its dev, even though it may be universally regarded as a classic, and would rather buy something with mixed reviews that's AUV3.

But if a genie came to me and offered a choice between two relationships -- Maryiln Monroe for a month, or the cutie from down the street for a year, or maybe even five or ten years -- I'd go with Marilyn. But that's just me.

CuSpN is dead? Sad. I remember when I was happy to have it because the Samvad app had died and CuSpN seemed like a replacement for it.

I doubt very much cuspn is dead! The dev made a new app pretty recently, makes all his stuff available free, clearly doesn't need the money but loves making apps. God knows though how long Hexaglyphics will be around so enjoy it while you can

Do Marilyn or the cutie get a say in this? Especially the cutie, who’s in for five-to-ten?

I do t think CuSpN is dead. The dev is very much still active and making new apps + updating old ones when need be. Hexaglyphics is fantastic though and unfortunately will probably die eventually. But I plan on using it as much as possible until then.

  • I humbly retract my characterization of CuSpN as dead or dying. And I certainly meant no offense to the dev. When I talk about dead and dying apps, I guess there’s a hint of irony to it, because I don’t really think of them that way either. I probably should’ve put the expression in scare quotes.

It’s just a sentiment you often hear in these fora when there hasn’t been an update for a while, that some thing is on its way out.

I’ve bought a few ~decade old apps this year, and I wouldn’t do it if I thought they were dead, as it not working at all. And CuSpN is brill, to me it sounds like gong amp hit the gym hard for two years and took singing lessons, no Roids tho

No offense taken! I only mentioned it because I don’t want anyone reading this to think it’s a dying app and then not download because of that.

There’s a ton of oooold apps that I have and still love and use to this day. I’ll be sad to eventually see them go.
