Pretty sure it's a church / cathedral organ. Doesn't step in the toes of the kind of organs genuine soundware are currently porting
The AudioKit stuff is a pretty good reference. Bleass as well.
That actually makes me more excited as I feel like that’s something lacking on iOS, at least in AU form. Module has a couple of church organs in their organ pack but they’re only decent. Hopefully they’ll port it 🤞 Pianoteq is (not so) slowly but surely creeping its way into my top of all time list. Truly a 10/10 app.
Organteq is a great sounding pipe organ, just the one instrument, and that’s it. Of course it has multitudes of sounds you can get out of it, like a real pipe organ. And all the pipes are modeled and customizable. We’ve been hoping for a v2 for some time, possibly with 1 or more additional instruments. It has a big advantage, being modeled, over the sampled ones. Almost all sampled pipe organs have large amounts of natural reverb as they can’t be separated from their halls where they are installed. If you are using Organteq in a hall (say a church) you don’t want that reverb in the sound. Your hall will add its own reverb. Organteq lets you control it completely and dial it out to get a dry sound.
I’m a church pianist (my church doesn’t have an organ) and I have performed with Organteq at Sunday services. Through the church PA it sounds wonderful! Everyone I talked to, who heard it, was very impressed. By far the sweetest sounding pipe organ VST I’ve tried. I think it’s a good deal. The high-end (sampled) organ VSTs can cost far more and typically use a subscription model so a significant monthly cost.
It’s worth noting that Organteq uses considerably more cpu horsepower than Pianoteq, in general. It relates closely to how many stops you have open at a time.
I’m a big fan of Pianoteq (I have the studio pro complete setup) also. I love dealing with Modartt, it’s the kind of company I’d consider going to work for (I’m a software engineer). When I had purchased Pianoteq Pro, and a few extra sound packs over the years, I wished I had sprung for Studio edition because I wanted most of them. I asked Modartt and they apparently added up all that i’d already purchased (in terms of dollars spent) and offered to upgrade me to Studio for the remainder which was only about $100. For that I got about 15 additional sound packs.
Great to hear! I remember reading this review which was definitely less enthusiastic than the SOS review for Pianoteq. They felt Organteq is still in early days, much like Pianoteq was some years ago.

I assume you can just play all this with a regular midi keyboard? Maybe some keys are assigned to certain functions? I remember McD mentioning he thought you might need a certain setup so I'd be curious about that.
To enjoy the full experience of playing a pipe organ, a MIDI controller that has at least 2 manuals (keyboards in organ speak) and a pedalboard is preferable. And the stops still have to be controlled! I think I have seen in the past a controller that also had the stops, but here are the results of a quick search:
A B4 controller:
https://www.bergermusic.de
Some pedalboards:
https://www.sweetwater.com/c513--Organ_Pedalboard_MIDI_Controllers
And an article with videos (haven't them watched yet) about controlling a real massive pipe organ with MIDI:

Thnx Zvon! Yeah, as much as Iove these sounds, I don't think these are paths I would want to go down, particularly as I'm more a guitarist than any kind of keyboard player lol. Organ is notoriously difficult to play! Could still make some great ambient soundscapey stuff with it regardless, I'm sure. The tone is the main appeal to me.
I saw this thread title, jumped straight in the App Store, downloaded the demo of Pianoteq 8 and my initial impressions were that I was absolutely blown away, I love how everything sounds. It’s incredible. By far the best piano app I’ve tried on iPad and I have tried a fair few.
Then I checked out the purchase options and holy crap, it would cost $600 for all Stage Pro!? I’m Australian btw, IDK if the price is AUD in the store or if its USD. I would hope its AUD. If not then.. even more??
That’s stupendously disappointing.
The market must be for.. either top-tier professional musicians that are making bank off their music, or people that have other jobs.. or something.
I am literally a professional musician in the sense that I play music for a living, and cover the bills, food, all of that.. all music. Music is my job.
The price is crazy prohibitive to me. I would never be able to pick that up.
At least the option to purchase the lowest level and buy bits over time is possible, a modular approach - I can appreciate that. But wow that price is insane.
In fairness though, it sounds incredibly good. I’m only knocking the price, not the product.
There’s been a bit of discourse here in this thread about the price but it seems like the majority find it fairly priced. I think so as well. It’s a desktop quality app through and through and the price, unfortunately for some, reflects that. The Studio Pro is out of my price range as well but I think I can swing for the standard version this summer some time.
I found the OrganTeq manual to help me understand how this app can be approached using typical MIDI keyboards.
Here’s how many keys there are on a typical Pipe Organ console:
It’s 3 x 61 notes and 32 bass pedal notes.
The manual explains for can set up 3 midi keyboards for the upper keyboards and another for the bass pedals. Each would be configured on a different MIDI channel.
For most of us you would want to configure a “split” from a single 88 note keyboard because that’s likely all you have to use.
So, you would decide which notes to allocate to which organ keyboards. For example:
I don’t think any IOS Pipe Organ apps go to the extreme of accepting 4 midi keyboards.
It gets even more complex because the app allows each keyboard to accept 97 unique notes per keyboard:
I’d imagine a serious Pipe Organist would appreciate being able to practice by setting up 3 x 61 note MIDI controllers and a 32 note pedal board and a laptop/desktop computer to practice for the next performance or
Recital. But for the rest of us… maybe not. But you could compose real sounding Pipe Organ pieces using most DAWs.
I love organs and would love Organteq but definitely not enough to have a midi controller that big or expensive haha. My normal controller would be fine for me.
Indeed, I am sure it would be a lot of fun! I don’t have Organteq but, over the years I have enjoyed a few sampled pipe organs with just a regular keyboard. Love their sounds!
Playing organ is very different from playing piano. That’s why usually in the classical music world, one is either a pianist or an organist, rarely both.
I have an electronic organ from the 70’s at home. Playing different sounds on each manual is the easy part. I never achieved any convincing pedal playing!
But, to be back on topic, I am in love with Pianoteq and I have never used any other software instrument as much in so little time.
Yeah, the price also reflects that it includes a desktop license (for two desktop machines) along with iOS license. So, yes, desktop prices too, and price isn't out of line for desktop. No need to go whole hog, start small and get more if you like it. No reason, really for anyone to go beyond the 'Standard' version. Try all the versions with demo that is nearly fully functional and includes all the paid piano packs.
Forget about Pro - standard version is more than enough, and that will include 2 instruments plus all the free ones you get (you can demo these, they are called 'Kivir' and in the free stuff section of Pianoteq website.
The free stuff includes some historical pianos, only one of which sounds anything like a modern grand piano. Some great harpsichords, a cimbalom, a clavichord, a decent electric piano etc.
Buying a standard licence will give you access to the physical modeling parameters, mic positions and types etc, as well as morphing and layering. Morphing is a brilliant feature. That's well worth having and only costs about 260 US dollars. That license is valid for desktop and ios, and allows an install on as many ios devices as you like.
You really don't need all the instruments, so most people will be very happy with the features of Standard, all the free instruments and 2 paid instruments included in the standard license. Pick one of the grand pianos, the petrov is highly rated (I like the petrov mistral) but of course it will depend on taste. Then maybe pick something else like the guitar or harp or whatever, again according to taste. Not cheap indeed, but considering the quality and that it is basically a desktop app at desktop price which includes free use of your instruments and a full featured app on an ios device, I think it is fairly priced.
NOTE: Stage gets 2 free instruments and Standard gets you 3 total.
Ah yes, my mistake!
I love it that they’re allowing existing customers to use their Pianoteq licenses with this new Pianoteq for iPad, but I wish they did not limit us to only three activations.
129 us dollar for the Stage version, including two instrument - worth every penny!
Also, we also have it on Mac for free, great!
Pianoteq for iPad have giving me much more piano joy than Ravencroft 275 and Collossus Piano (there are good too)…
Pianoteq is more than worth it. Each version gets better and sounds more like a real piano than the previous version to the point where now….it is totally convincing, at least to me it is. I’ve been a customer since version 5 or 6 (I forget which) and the improvements in sound quality since then are really remarkable.
I’m glad that Modartt didn’t release some inferior, hobbled version of Pianoteq for the iPad that lacks essential features or doesn’t sound as good. This is the real deal.
I forgot I had purchased pianoteq 5 back in 2014….upgrading to 8 and using on iOS was only $29
Modartt is awesome about upgrades. It doesn’t cost $100+ like many music software upgrades do.
It’s funny, I just like the upright and Yamaha vintage tones, despite the lack of clarity and breadth. I find that sound very sweet and naive and unassuming.
I think I prefer ravenscroft with the tone softened and mellow pure piano but probably because I haven’t played with settings much. Regardless, this is such a great app to have available and I’ll really want to use the grands for a lot of stuff, just wanted to comment on the sounds that really affect me.
Edit: ahhh there’s lots of lovely sounds, the Steinway cinematic with its tubey middle… I think it’s just funny to me that I’m not immediately drawn to all the showpieces as they sound a bit like a surgical instrument to me and appeal more to my mind than my heart. It is staggering how beautiful and rich the grands are though messing with settings
Yeah $29 for an upgrade on desktop seems reasonable
Yep the softer sounding ones are so damn nice in Pianoteq. The felt piano is chefs kiss.
Just to make it clear: it's a limit of three active desktop machine licenses --OR-- on two desktop machines plus as many iOS machines as you want (technically, as many iOS machines as are linked to your AppleID).
I didn’t realize that (when I opened Pianoteq on my iPad, it just said that all my activations were full). That’s great and definitely better but I do wish I could keep my existing 3 activations and still use Pianoteq on my iPad. I have it on a desktop and two laptops and I use all 3.
Nevertheless, being able to use it on all the iOS devices linked to my account as only one activation is much better than what I had thought was the case.
They are counting all your IOS devices as 1 of the three activations. So, you can activate 2 more Macs, Windows or Linux devices before you will need to deactivate anything to add a new device. I activated a Windows laptop and it seemed to have a touchpad hardware problem so I deactived it for an Intel MacBook. At this time I have 2 MacBooks and 3 IOS devices activated.
It’s a really smart decision.
For a new user the cost is high but for existing Mac, Windows and Linux users they got IOS privileges free and they are overjoyed to be able to install on an iPhone and use it on a gig.
I went crazy and got Studio and I’ll be overjoyed when new instruments roll out and I get them for free. I’ve been going crazy creating Presets. Anyone can use my presets in “TRY Pro” mode for 20 minutes in a DAW. Stop the DAW and reload and you’ll get the Preset re-loaded and another 20 minutes to TRY it out further. NOTE in this demo/TRY mode there will be a few notes that will not work… mostly accidentals (black keys) I have read.
I’ve actually never used the felt pianos. I don’t even think I ever noticed them - are there felt piano recordings of all the main pianos, like Bluethner, Yamaha, etc.?
I guess I’m really set in my ways. I mostly keep using the same Pianoteq pianos again and again.
I love the sound of a nice felt piano. Piano in Blue by Cinesamples has always been one of my favorites.
Did someone tried to use PianoTeq8 nside LP iOS ?
I only have the demo of PianoTeq8 but it loads up fine and works without any issues.
