what im sort of dreaming about is this push 3 thingy is on Linux and you can upgrade the CPU and harddrive etc.. what's stopping really smart programmers hacking it and make all sorts of standalone unofficial firmware things possible? its a nice thought. Also midi 2.0 is around the corner.

it going to be around for a long time.

Honestly, this is why spending 2K on this thing doesn't phase me. I've been happily using my Push2 for many years (bought it day 1) and I've use the hell out of it. I will use this thing all the time. Like...whether its stand alone or not, I use my push every time I use Live.

@Tarekith Do you know if Push3 can download Set's from Ableton Cloud without a computer and straight up over wifi?

I do not believe that is currently possible, not seeing any mention of it in the manual.

Drat. I was hoping for "fart around with Note on something while waiting in line somewhere, hop over to a coffee shop with my Push 3 and download that set from the cloud and start farting around with it". But it looks like I have to actually have my MacBook involved in the middle there.

Correct, there’s no way to access Note saved files in the cloud, I checked. Maybe in the future, but for now it’s local Wi-Fi access only.

  • Push 2 could not browse or load the factory instrument midi files - can Push 3? Didnt see it mentioned in the manual.

  • By and large, the functionality of Push 3 is exactly the same as Push 2 at this point.

  • What are the rules on what Max for Live devices can be used/loaded/installed? I've not seen any reference in the manual talking about it.

That’s tricky unfortunately. Most of the factory content M4L devices should work, but third party devices are totally hit or miss. They need to have been configured to be mapped to push’s controls, plus a few other things under the hood on a case by case basis to work properly. I personally don’t use M4L so I can’t comment on the specifics, just passing on what colleagues have reported.

I'm hoping that the kentaro and fors stuff works. It would be pretty awesome if Ableton ever opened up the M4L api to the push graphical interface so things could get customized to not only the button and knob layouts, but also show graphics as well.

Just watching Andrew Huang’s video on the subject.

I’ve gone as far as: ‘you can use the jog wheel to edit the notes’.

    Really?!

It’s 2023 and you get to use a jog wheel to edit the notes??? What a privilege 💪💪💪 🤣🤣🤣

Honestly, we’re so lucky with super powerful iPads and great apps.

Don’t get sucked in by the hype. If you’re a long time Ableton user, I get it…continuity, muscle memory etc.

Otherwise, please do yourself a favour and get best available tools on iOS and use the rest of the money on a nice trip of something.

The CDM article has a bit of info down the bottom.
    https://cdm.link/2023/05/inside-the-new-ableton-push/

“The majority of devices which do not rely upon Jitter, Java, Mira, or third party externals should basically work on Push 3 at launch.”

Which will be a fair few I reckon and I’m pretty sure the control integration and visual support will be pretty limited, some that are playback only etc.

Super excited to hear RNBO support is coming though.

Mine arrives on Saturday, it’s ‘just’ the teathered version but I’m pretty happy to wait to see how the standalone develops. To me it seems like it’ll be a bit of a work in progress for a while but the fact that we now have ableton in a box in the first place is a beaut! The future is bright for this young Padawan

  • you can chuck M4L devices into a rack and map controls to macro's and then you can control the parameters in push 3 mostly already.

Yeah I did think of this but the problem is a lot of the more complex and creative max devices rely heavily on visual feedback in one way or another. When you’re tethered that’s no problem but in standalone it would be an issue. I’m sure there will be a slew of updates coming for a lot of devices in the not so distant future though

I think it's all very subjective. I for one love my ipad but really miss hardware buttons and dials. Tapping on the screen to move dials and faders...it's just lacking (for me). I'm no Ableton user, but still, Push 3 as a standalone device, offering tactile controls and no distractions/notifications, seems very attractive.

This new Push standalone makes me want to sell my MPC and Maschine to subsidize the cost 😂

I was thinking the same thing !

Not sure if you’ve used a push before, but it’s a bit different than that. You actually select the notes quickly on the pads themselves in the clip, depending on which layout you have your sequencer in on the push, then you can quickly nudge those notes with the jog wheel, or the velocity, etc. it’s quicker than you think. At least it is for me. I’ve been using a push 1 and 2 since the day the were announced. It is definitely muscle memory, but it’s also not “horrible”. People pay 2K for a synth that doesn’t sequence at all. Or doesn’t have a screen. Or is a monosynth. Or hell, it’s only a reverb 😂

But Push 3 is a full MPE capable instrument running Ableton Live with CV, analog I/O and ADAT digital, Midi I/O, a USB interface, battery powered, etc. All of those things, you have to add on to an iPad with a cable, USB hub, individual devices, yadda yadda. The Push? It’s all built in.

It truly is an instrument in its own right. This video is 8 years old on a push 1 connected to a PC, for example.

Sorry, you aren’t doing that with an iPad, no way with just a glass screen. But you can do all of that on push 3 stand-alone and now the pads are even more expressive. Like you quickly play a bass line from numerous synths or samplers in a midi clip, sample it to audio and warp it with a simpler onto a pad in a drum rack so it’s still tempo adjustable… super fast. Do the same for a little Rhodes lick, brass stabs, etc. and then play those with your hands on an actual pad.

It’s just a different beast than an iPad. I don’t compare them. Both have advantages, but they are different advantages. Pick your poison…or don’t and have both!

  • Yeah it's a different experience compared to iPad and they don't compete, but rather they compliment each other very well. I like to play my ipad synths in AUM from my Push2 and can combine the different strengths of hardware vs glass touch and they make good partners, sequence your ipad synths from Push if you want... I hope they do update the software across all Push for the new visual set navigation, because this is the main thing holding me back from using it more regularly.

I totally get the idea of hardware knobs, sliders and buttons being more appealing than the screen but here we're talking hybrid with the bottleneck of the small screen.

Personally for live use I’d struggle with only 8 knobs and no faders. There’s too much jumping around and doing stuff like applying low pass filter on 3 parts simultaneously gets very tricky. I’m currently riding a Circuit Tracks and Launch Control XL both used as controllers for Drambo and Loopy Pro and I’m just about managing with the amount of physical controls with many pots being multifunction macros.

I do agree with what @drez said about it being an almost perfect sum of its many parts. It’s a system that surely can be muscle memorised and ridden like a spaceship. I see people doing wonders with hardware loopers and would find ie loopy pro too broad spectrum.

I guess what really threw me was me reminiscing the times when I used to program various 80’s and 90’s hardware synths with 2 or 3 line displays, with omnipresent touch screens available it’s a shame they didn’t think of putting in one in here, although it would unavoidably push the price up.

Absolutely a subjective matter and definitely not for me.

You can also connect controllers directly to Push 3. The control surface mappings you have in Live also carry over so it’s literally just plug and play. I can’t seem to find the video now but there was a livestream where a guy actually demonstrated it using a launch control

Yep, obviously you can but then you have another box, cables etc.
If direct hook up of a usb midi controller is indeed possible hopefully it will provide power to power it.

I expect it will need a usb midi host box for it to work though.

Push 3 can power one USB midi controller via the USB socket so plug and play, if you wanna use more than one USB midi controller then you need a powered USB hub and then 6 USB MIDI controllers can be used.

I hesitated to check to see how I got on with iOS Logic first, just in case I needed the cash for an iPad upgrade. Not going for that option now so a Push 3 is on the cards instead….when I can get one!

  • I’ve just gone for it, stand-alone version - I just had too many reasons why it was right for me and none that it wasn’t…

like you said before it probably best that you have a little time to just think about the options. New ipads/push 3 all expensive shit.

Oh yes, definitely. Even if it was in stock I'd need a couple of months ruminating and checking reviews before spending that amount of cash. But the last few days of intensive Logic based delving have confirmed Live is still the best platform for me, and the Push 3 should see me well served for many years to come.

Look forward to hearing how you get on with it.

  • @Tarekith or anyone who gets Push3 basic model ,
Is audio interface class compliant for IOS ? (via USB-C I guess for Ipad Air4)
i.e to be used as basic non-Ableton midi controller (pads & knobs) + audio interface -
& if so does that include the ADAT I/O ?

just wondering - if it could be used as above for Ipad only work, as well as for my macBook + Ableton Live work -
it would double it’s appeal & value to me .
