Ah ok. Ableton certainly seem to have knocked it out of the park with this one.
USB C port on the ipad, using the cable that came with the Push 3. And only with the Push in controller mode.
Hmm, maybe I’ll try the OEM cable next time, cheers 🤞🙏
Push (controller version) midi is recognised via ICA4 so you could assign buttons/keys to Drambo via midi mapping. Knob assigning is a bit weird as its touch capacitive but I'm sure the dev could work it out. Totally dumb midi controller of course and no lights or use of the LCD screen... Interesting if clever people hack the standalone though and open the thing up.
I made a song mode device for Push - pushsongmode.com
Would love feedback!
It worked, very quiet and hard to tell what’s going on, but I guess the door’s open for something better in the future!
Oh that’s quite tripping, I was wondering how possible that would be!
Any of you with the standalone Push 3 know if the https://fors.fm plugins work and are "tweakable" with the knahbs?
ah i really like his FM Synths on M4L! nice guy too.
I don't have the standalone but i can tell you all the parameters (M4L doublet) come up on my controller version as default!!!
By the way my Controller version fricken rocks!!
i might drop him a line and ask.
Well I'll eat my hat. Saw a push3 set live over the weekend at Synth Shed event in london. Looks like abelton has done the impossible and released a mostly stable first release.
Some points that others haven't been covered generally in reviews or that i i agree with here:
Anyone know if the ADAT can be master or follow clock sync?
usually, you can do both ways on adat but I don't know. i have ordered some adat cables so i will check soon.
there is that general rule of using the device that does the analogue conversion to be the master but maybe the better audio device has better timing i guess?. however i havent tried this yet., looking forward to mess around with this on my ES8.
Since I found no settings for that side of things, I have to use it as master.
Did Logic Pro for iPad killed off these boxes?
They sold out fast so most probably the opposite
I can’t say it will for me, I’ve just decamped back to the laptop version after trying to work on iPad logic; very commendable but infuriating to work with for me. I can’t wait to get back to digging into the Push, so much more fun than either…
Well, Apple showed that these programs can be hosted on the iPad.. so.. we wait..
Opposite for me too - gave Logic a proper go, and was prepared to upgrade my iPad for it. Instead I’m waiting for the Push 3’s to come back in stock.
Actually iPads have nothing to do with hardware , completely different experience / workflow
It would be cool for Ableton to run on iphone ,without GUI , only the code and plug a Push2/3 controller (same for Maschine etc)
I think Tarkeith mentioned that Ableton sold them way faster than they anticipated, which means the demand was high. I've got my standalone version preordered and will not be upgrading my iPad for a long time, and it's 5 years old I think (12.9 pro with 10X processor). I've already got a MacBook, Digitakt (which I might sell off now), a Syntakt (I'll be keeping), and going from there with the Push3. I'm a pretty good "player" of the pads on the push, both with finger drumming and especially melodic lines. I've gotten the chromatic mode down in my head and hands, so this is going to be a super fun experience. I'm looking forward to figuring out how to best map a solo violin to MPE to get the best use of the pads.
I love going to the coffee shop and working on music, it's been fun with the Elektrons because they are so small. The problem with a push 1/2 is that you have to have a laptop somewhere, so going somewhere is impossible because of how much space you eat up. Now, I can just sit anywhere with the push3 and have at it.
I never hook up my iPad or iPhone to a midi controller because that seems pointless, I'd rather just hook it up to my MacBook and have more at my disposal (that's a personal preference) so my experience with the iDevice is playing everything "on glass". Drums, chords, melodies, everything. It's not a fun experience for me. You've got to be way too precise, I end up editing so much stuff because there's no velocity and you fat finger stuff, especially chords. I don't have that problem with a push and actual pads
Can I edit as detailed on the Push 3 as I could on an iPad running anything like LP or NS2 or whatever? Eh, no, but that's not really the point. The point is to just be creative, add tracks, build something and then refine later. And then, if you are a performer, dump that back into the push 3 and you have a perfect performance tool. And it's completely expandable to hook up whatever you want right out of the box.
So yeah, for me, it is the perfect compliment. But if you are total iOS musician and your workflow is completely "in that box" I can definitely see where it's not for that group. I plan on using it as not just a writing tool, but also as a performance tool where I do both finger drumming and sample trigger, like more trip hop type stuff. I CANNOT DO TRIP HOP...which is sad, because I have the "physical chops" to perform it on a push, but I lack the ability to write the material 😂 So that will be part of my journey as well, and sampling stuff with audio hijack on my MacBook is easy instead of crate digging, I can just dump all that in a folder, shove it onto the push 3, and then go off somewhere and chop it up...which, in simpler, is remarkably easy and instantly maps across the push for sequencing. It's just a killer workflow.
Will I be writing orchestral stuff on a standalone push? No, I'll be doing that in arrangement view from my laptop, BUT I'll be able to really use the MPE stuff as more companies make their libraries MPE'able and I can then use the push for that too.
Long winded, but I definitely think the Push 3 is selling like hotcakes, they just can't make as many of them as people already have bought iPads across the world, but Ableton is going to make a pretty penny off this deal.
Over on KVR they are saying that Kit has been optimised for the Push 2&3 in a new update. I bought it for this but I haven’t tried yet (today should be the last day of 30% discount, right?).
You know what, I‘ll try it out and keep you updated. Only have Push 2 though.
here's how fors opal M4L looks like on P3S

OK, so Kit (the individual devices) is nicely mapped, as are Glänta, Chiral, Superberry. With Doublet and Bokeh there are mappings but the banks/pages are not really labled.
Yes like with Kit the individual devices seem to be mapped, but the "ensemble" isn't, I think.
NOICE! That will be fun to get lost in. Love the opal devices.
Same, amazing sounds
Why not add an HDMI out on the Standalone? it’s running Live, right?
iPad would make a perfect companion to this, simplest would be a way to just route audio and MIDI in and out, though a dedicated app would also be interesting…
Just a thought, is there an Adat/MIDI interface that would let you connect an iPad, using multiple streams of audio through the Adat, and MIDI directly?
Maybe that Behringer 1820 thing?
I was wondering what sort of iPad connectivity the USB connection provides. If you could feed MIDI and audio in from the iPad that’d be ace.
Right now not much; with the USB C connection in controller mode, the Push shoots out simple MIDI with no indication of what octave or any options - it’s only set up to work with live I guess… I’m hoping it’ll open up over time…
Ah ok, that’s a shame. Though I can see it could cause me to start looking around for hardware synths to go with it, when I get one!
