If this can get Jack Antonoff bass synthesizer sounds, then I’m interested.

Which in particular? It can do a lot for sure.

He has created a very stylistic bass synthesizer sound, both as a musician and as a producer for others. A quick example would be anything he’s co-wrote and produced for Taylor Swift. Apparently, he created a new pop sound that’s been around for about 15 years or more. While his synthesizer sounds are what he’s most noted for, his clever arrangements and mixes jumped out at me.

If you think he’s good, check out the 1980s, or the first Shura LP. His collaborations with Carly Rae were severely lacking. And I never liked what Taylor Swift became after Fearless, but that’s another topic. Though Antonoff had a hand in dumbing her down and boxing her in the wrong box for sure.

Nice! I was expecting more of a splash but not many comments yet. I’m about to buy it now.

Let us know! Curious how many presets - and do they mostly lean towards bass sounds or can this do like an ambient pad too?

Will do! Should be reporting back shortly. Just got home so I gotta get situated first 😂

I know you probably hate it, but I'm going to wait for your review and other folks on a forum in which I have trust. 😌 So, better twist those knobs! 😂

I will say in initial testing, it’s fantastic. I’m kind of a bass head and I do think this one largely depends on how highly you value bass in your tracks. Like @NeuM mentioned, I’m one of those that WILL twiddle for a long time to get the “perfect” bass sound. If that’s what you’re after, it doesn’t get much better than this. Just sounds thick and meaty.

I'm the same as you in that I'm also a bass head. I haven't tested this synth just yet, but I plan to today while I create my next mashup. :)

Got a hard electro bass working in a matter of a minute, the exact sound I wanted! Will feature on my next mashup!

Hell yeah 😎 looking forward to hearing it! I’m really really liking this synth. It sounds fantastic.

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/cje9gtdahlka6lp/062423a (2)-converted.m4a?dl=0

So far, the next mashup. The bass is Lowtones, and sheeeesh it's so dang good!

My interest for Lowtone is heating up. Not just from your song, It’s great BTW. Just watching Doug video as I type this, love that extremely saturated but in a way tamed character in synth voice. It’s certainly different than Moog, good thing because no one needs another Moog copycat, this sound is more industrial to me, more modern with direction towards old-school.

Yeah I get exactly what you're saying mate. Definitely my new go-to bass synth! :)

And definitely not just for basses - you can do some quite complex and interesting sounds in a good range of the frequency. Getting rid of the chorus and toning down the reverb are definitely good starting points - these tend to make things a bit cheesy to my ears, often

Anti-chorus? I used to be when I was just a guitarist…hated it on guitar. Now I love it on most anything.

Someone mentioned there is no manual. There is, TB always make pretty thorough manuals:

    https://www.toneboosters.com/manuals/TB_Lowtone.pdf

Not really a fan AT ALL of most of the existing presets, they’re just not to my taste at all, but this seems capable of some great sounds, whether by making your own patches or using the randomiser, which really is brilliant. Never judge a book by the cover, never judge a synth by the presets, to paraphrase Dendy.

The Tool Tips do not work for me, at least not in AUM. Can anyone confirm?

    Cheers

    Thanks

  • After about one hour with 'LowTone' (From now I'll call it 'BlowTones') it's honestly pretty darn meh?!
I don't get the 'hype' or maybe I'm just not the target audience for this at all and that's perfectly fine.

Thankfully I'm no longer an insta-buy addict but this would definitely have been a candidate for insta-refund which seldom or almost never happens and that says a lot...

I'm happy for those who happen to enjoy it :sunglasses:

Funny, I'm DEFINITELY not the target audience, as I don't use a lot of bass, but I've enjoyed what I've got out of it so far, despite some egregious UI omissions mentioned above (though double tap to reset does work in the mod sections, it can be a bit fiddly. Also find myself sometimes accidentally moving knobs when I'm trying to long press to open the mod section).

That's just a few of the 'things' and the collapsable panes can drive one nuts even on a 4k screen where there should be enough space to show 'everything' for easy access, guess someone out there must have a fetish for collapsable panels?! :sunglasses:

Oh well, at least I didn't spend anything on it so that's that and I'm happy for those that do enjoy it!

  • This synth has something that I don't think any other has, a balanced bass level across the range. Click the button in oscillator headers that looks like an ear. Instant fix.

Previously, if you had a problem with bass level on different notes, you had to grab a dynamic EQ or something to try and fix it. This offers a single click fix.

Every synth has oscillators and filters, it's hard to get excited for a new VA synth, but this one fixes an important problem and has a familiar architecture that can make basically any analog like bass sound.

Yeah that is definitely the usp.

@Samu the collapsible windows are great in theory but a bit fiddly in practice. Overall I quite like that idea though

I'll mess around with more later on, thankfully TB offers demo versions for the desktop.
Most of the time it's the UI that either makes or breaks a synths 'fun factor', sound is secondary.
If it's no fun to program it doesn't get used. This is what happened to me and TB FlowTones.
It sounds super nice but it's a total pita to program...

There's no doubt that for total bass-headz this synth is a gift from above :sunglasses:
For brain-massage and speaker destruction it might work really well, which ever breaks first...

Just erase your comment, add a few dots, then tap on the "Save Draft" button. That's the only way I've found to get around this forum software annoyance.

I've been playing a bit more with the randomize feature on the Desktop version and it generates sounds that put the bundled presets in the corner of shame BIG TIME as they do NOT make the synth justice at all!

It's 'weird' that a 'randomize' feature beats the crap out of those created by the 'sound designers' for this app?! :sunglasses:

@Gavinski I assume you've played around with the randomize feature of 'TB BlowTones'?

I may re-evaluate a purchase at some point, but I will always call it Blow Tones, sounds cooler that Lowtone...

Yes, they're excellent, and programmed a few of my own I really like. Yeah the presets that come with it are not to my taste at all! Besides that, not everyone who makes good synths is good at making interesting factory presets. Icegear being a good example

True! I mean it should not be the 'synth' that dictates what 'genre/style' of sounds it's capable of as a good synth with enough 'tweak-ability' will easily cover any genre/style :sunglasses:

It's easy to fall into the trap that a particular synth is for a specific genre just based on the presets that ship with it...
...heck I almost fell deep in that 'trap' with this Blow Tones!!

Same happened with the BA-01 which I was lucky to win a week back...
...it does NOT need any presets at all as the randomize function is so good!
(Baby Audio could drop a monophonic 'Magic Synth CS' with a BIG DICE and volume slider based on the BA-1 engine)

Oh well, I learn as long as I breathe or something like that?! :D

Sorry that was just a generic conclusion applicable to a lot of existing synths, not restricted to Lowtones which I don't even own ;)

For the lazy asses like I am, quick recap of Lowtone initial impressions from forum friends. Thank you guys! 🫡

    • @HotStrange: sounds great, go to bass machine. Just sounds thick and meaty.
    • @NeuM: don't think it's for me.
    • @rvr: like it more then not, sound is interesting and has a character.
    • @shirbeats: beautiful sounding, can layer harmonies, randomizer is also incredible
    • @jwmmakerofmusic: it's so dang good! my new go-to bass synth!
    • @thesoundtestroom: possibly the Best Bass Synth for the iPad!
    • @Ailerom: I like it. Seems easy to use and sounds great.
    • @Gavinski: not really a fan of the factory presets, great sounds, brilliant randomiser, complex and interesting sounds.
    • @eylvy: sounds are more "colorful”, can use them for both leads/pads and bass notes.
    • @Samu: turning from super meh to pretty cool, for total bass-headz this synth is a gift from above.
    • @branis: fixes an important problem, balanced bass level across the range.
    • @lasselu: not getting this one...love their effects though...

P.S. Quotes are taken from those who gave impressions after they used Lowtone synth.

  • I'll add mine...
Thought Flowtones was meh, so I'm not getting this one...love their effects though...

For others, it’s the ear symbol. Here’s the manual excerpt:

It is also worth noting the filter section options of the lightening symbol (supercharged resonance) and the tube/valve (non-linear analog sound):

It’s weird that the filter cutoff isn’t animated when you adjust it but the resonance is?

I thought it was weird until the dev explained it Gus:

The filter response doesn't change with the cuttoff control, because the cutoff itself depends on what note you play - it follows the MIDI note as proper filters do. Or worse, if you play multiple notes simultaneously, one would need multiple curves that are somehow overlaid. That would be extremely confusing so we simply show the curve of the filter itself.

Let's just say that it's turning from super meh to pretty cool especially since the randomizer creates very nice and playable presets, the built-in presets do not do not really showcase what the synth is capable.

As note to my self, KISS (Keep it Simple Stupid!).
There's absolutely no need to 'enable everything' in order to make a usable sound :sunglasses:

So far I've only bought one app this month (I don't count the annual sub for Logic Pro for iPad) so there's still room for a few.
I won BA-01 which was one of the candidates so we never now what happens before the month ends...
