This synth has something that I don't think any other has, a balanced bass level across the range. Click the button in oscillator headers that looks like an ear. Instant fix.

Previously, if you had a problem with bass level on different notes, you had to grab a dynamic EQ or something to try and fix it. This offers a single click fix.

Every synth has oscillators and filters, it's hard to get excited for a new VA synth, but this one fixes an important problem and has a familiar architecture that can make basically any analog like bass sound.

Yes, thank you for pointing this out.

For others, it’s the ear symbol. Here’s the manual excerpt:

It is also worth noting the filter section options of the lightening symbol (supercharged resonance) and the tube/valve (non-linear analog sound):

It’s weird that the filter cutoff isn’t animated when you adjust it but the resonance is?

I thought it was weird until the dev explained it Gus:

The filter response doesn't change with the cuttoff control, because the cutoff itself depends on what note you play - it follows the MIDI note as proper filters do. Or worse, if you play multiple notes simultaneously, one would need multiple curves that are somehow overlaid. That would be extremely confusing so we simply show the curve of the filter itself.

Isn’t keytracking the filter an option that can be disabled though (the keyboard icon)? The cutoff dial still opens and close the filter according to frequency in that case. I think it’s the first time I’ve seen that not be animated. No biggie but just a bit odd IMO.

That was one of the 'things' I noticed as well as I'm quite used to 'touching the filter' to adjust cutoff and resonance when such a graph is present, In short if it's not 'interactive' it could equally well be permanently hidden...

That sounds valid, maybe email the dev!

  • Lucky for me, I have an old mini2 that I only use as a control surface, for which I’m able to learn the synth panel on. Because on a phone, the lightening and other icons are indistinguishable. I only know there is a lightening icon cause of a comment.

I like what I am hearing. I’m just perplexed that there are all of these panels which can be hidden, but the keyboard is not foldable. That would be really awesome for phone users. Fold keyboard, expand the panel of panels. I guess that’s what the manual is for.

Nice! I was expecting more of a splash but not many comments yet. I’m about to buy it now.

Let us know! Curious how many presets - and do they mostly lean towards bass sounds or can this do like an ambient pad too?

Will do! Should be reporting back shortly. Just got home so I gotta get situated first 😂

I know you probably hate it, but I'm going to wait for your review and other folks on a forum in which I have trust. 😌 So, better twist those knobs! 😂

I will say in initial testing, it’s fantastic. I’m kind of a bass head and I do think this one largely depends on how highly you value bass in your tracks. Like @NeuM mentioned, I’m one of those that WILL twiddle for a long time to get the “perfect” bass sound. If that’s what you’re after, it doesn’t get much better than this. Just sounds thick and meaty.

I'm the same as you in that I'm also a bass head. I haven't tested this synth just yet, but I plan to today while I create my next mashup. :)

Got a hard electro bass working in a matter of a minute, the exact sound I wanted! Will feature on my next mashup!

Hell yeah 😎 looking forward to hearing it! I’m really really liking this synth. It sounds fantastic.

So far, the next mashup. The bass is Lowtones, and sheeeesh it's so dang good!

My interest for Lowtone is heating up. Not just from your song, It’s great BTW. Just watching Doug video as I type this, love that extremely saturated but in a way tamed character in synth voice. It’s certainly different than Moog, good thing because no one needs another Moog copycat, this sound is more industrial to me, more modern with direction towards old-school.

Yeah I get exactly what you're saying mate. Definitely my new go-to bass synth! :)

Same here. I can see myself using the A LOT.

And definitely not just for basses - you can do some quite complex and interesting sounds in a good range of the frequency. Getting rid of the chorus and toning down the reverb are definitely good starting points - these tend to make things a bit cheesy to my ears, often

Have you tried to make any pads with it? It has polyphonic capabilities but I feel like with that engine it could get muddy real quick.

Really? For me a long-tap on Unison and Punch brings up the options for the function, same as right click on desktop.
For all other knobs with light on bring up the modulation depths...

Also are you on the release version or a beta?

Yes it brings up the time parameter and that can be modulated. I’m on beta but I think the current beta is the same as the store version

I fail to assign any source (velocity etc.) to the 'Time' or 'Punch Depth' once the slider is up...

I can accept 'user-malfunction' but this really feels like a bug since it's same behavior on desktop...
...to me the 'dot' simply indicates that there's more parameters under the hood not that they can be automagically modulated, Modulating the unison voices and spread using LFOs would knock the CPU :sunglasses:

Ideally I'd like to use velocity to control to 'depth' of the punch as well as controlling the unison depth using the mod-wheel.
But so far I've failed to do that...

The 'Punch' function could also use a 'slope' as it's in practice a pitch AD envelope, this could be used to creat kick-drums or other effects, with an 'instant drop' after a time even classic chip-chiff effects...(ie. hold the pitch +12 semitones for ~20ms and drop it back to 0).

Apparently there's already an update in to works so I'll try to keep cool until it drops...

    Cheers!

  • A first update should arrive reasonably soon - assuming Apple lets us!

    Perfect!

While you're here checking the feedback I thought I'd share a few minor additions that I feel would be totally bonkers!

For The Gate-Sequencer I'd love to see a one-shot mode (ie. play to end and stop, or why not ping-pong, reverse and random as well?), uni-polar/bi-polar output option (currently it's bi-polar) and 'vertical snap value' (for example +/- 12 semitones for nice legato-lead lines, chip arpeggios etc.).

As the Punch option is in practice an AD Pitch envelope a 'curve' parameter going from instant(ie. delay for the punch time and drop to 0), linear, exponential & logarithmic would increase it's usability and allow creation of kicks, zaps and other effects.

Also being able to hide the piano-keyboard when used as an AUv3 would be really appreacited.
My initial impression was a bit Luke-Warm. I gave the desktop version an extended spin (~3-4 hours), got the iPad version and I'm sold :sunglasses:

    Cheers!

Apple are tricky like that, ugh. They like to mess with devs. @CaelumAudio are going through a similar issue with Apple.

By the way I love ReelBus and have started using your reverb on my mixes. Top quality reverb! Love your other plugs too. :)

..why not add zoom the the gate sequencer as well for more precision when editing the steps?

Once a ‘numerical entry pad’ is ready it could propagate to all the other TB app as as well :sunglasses:
